Well, you’ve got to hand it to them: Canadian retailers are not going down without a fight. This year there are a record number of Black Friday sales and for the first time ever there are an increasing number of Black Friday Week sales. Canadian retailers are rising up against their United States competition and sending a clear message: “Canadians will stay home this year on Black Friday”.
However, we would not be very smart here at Smart Canucks if we didn’t alert you to the fact that not all of the Canadian Black Friday deals are all that great. Please be aware that although the retailers will come at you with flashy signs and midnight madness, there are still better deals found south of the border. I am certainly not encouraging people to ignore the sales found right here at home. In fact, I highly suggest people search for deals in Canada first and then compare them to those found in the US. If the better deal is in your own backyard, by all means shop to your hearts content and support the Canadian economy. However, if the Black Friday deals in the USA can’t be beat, then go and save yourself a loonie. Bottom line: be a smart and savvy shopper. Do your research and stretch your dollar. Oh, and remember to have fun!
Do you plan on shopping in Canada this Black Friday? Or will you go where the better deal is (even if it means crossing the 49th parallel?)

Black Friday is no longer just for Americans. It has become a popular event in Canada, and yes folks, it is here to stay. Twenty years ago most Canadians would have told you that Boxing Day was the main holiday shopping event. And now thanks to an increased Canadian dollar, increased duty-free limits for cross border shoppers and a huge surge in online shopping, Canadians have two major shopping days each year.
This presents a huge challenge for Canadian retailers. Good grief, it’s bad enough that retail giants like Target are landing on Canadian soil, now they have to worry about Canadians bolting south for better deals. Or worse, sitting in their the comfort of their own homes and clicking “confirm order” on items at a reduced price with free shipping. So how do they stay competitive?
In recent years, Canadian retailers have resorted to holding Black Friday deals of their own. Do you remember the days when they even offered to match American prices? And now they have presented a new strategy: Pre-Black Friday sales. Yep, you can get better “Black Friday” deals a week before Black Friday. Have you wondered why there has been a surge in Midnight Madness and One Day Sales in the middle of November? It’s all an effort to get Canadians to spend their money before Black Friday. Hmmm….very sneaky.
Although their efforts are bold, most Canadians will still enjoy the near-free deals on Black Friday. They will stand in long lines, park a mile away from any mall, sit on their computer for hours and even take the day off of work to get a better deal. Black Friday is the new Boxing Day.
