C’mon Canada: Doggy Pooh Bags

dogpoop1

Today when I went for a walk, did I count the birds? The spring flowers? No, I counted the endless bags of dog poop bags littered everywhere.

Taking your dog for a walk and putting their feces in a bag, then tossing the bag in a garbage. Respectable and responsible practice. Bagging your dogs feces and then throwing it on someones lawn, or hanging it in the trees. Despicable and disrespectful. Why take the time to pick up your dogs droppings then turn around and litter it on someones property? To me this practice is just as bad as leaving the droppings on the grass.

I’ve noticed more and more people doing this and want to know why some think this is acceptable?

Have you noticed an influx of pooh bags in your area?

I’m assuming that some dog owners don’t want to carry around a bag full of feces, but shouldn’t of they considered that when buying a dog?

If you are a bag bandit as mentioned above, please stop. It’s littering. And really, do you think your down the block neighbor wants to untangle a bag of feces from their tree?

Seriously? What kind of yahoo would throw it in a tree – how irresponsible!

  2. wifegriz says:

    PS – nice photo change!

  3. Sally says:

Bahahah! I didn’t realize how visible the pooh was until publishing.

I see it in tree all the time, from here to Toronto!

  4. Rockin' Kitty says:

Yep, was walking out back in the ally heading with mu hubby and he looks down and sees a little purple frilly thing with white hearts around the edge, and says, “Awww look, some little girl lost her Barbie dress.”
When I looked down it was only further confirmation, he needs his eye’s checked. It was a bag of dog pooh!
At least the purple bag was indication not to step in it as I often don’t see it when it’s just there ‘unwrapped’ (mostly on the sidewalk!!) How disgusting?!!

  5. Deborah says:

There are some Cities who charge dog owners for dropping their doo in the wrong places or don’t pick it up. 🙂

  6. Adam says:

LOL not like the good old days when you find it burning on the step your climbing in a tree to snatch crap lol

  7. Ami1984 says:

Yeah it is terrible, i have 3 dogs and never have I done this, or not pick up after them, You are so right people should consider the responsibility before becoming a dog owner. Honestly I think it is worse (for the environment not for peoples shoes 🙂 to pick it up then litter the bag.

  8. Jen says:

People don’t pick up dog poop in my area. Poop = Fertilizer. Fertilizer = Good for the ground. So nope, I haven’t. 🙂

I think it’d be weird to have to do that…

  9. HelenaZAE says:

My kids count the dog poop piles on our nightly walks. Tonight 18 piles in a 20 min walk around our house majority of it on the side walk. EWWWW. My kids have to jump over it and they scream dog #%@$! Yes, they use that word for dog poop because mommy gets so mad having to manuever a stroller around it, that I use it. Funny how they know the difference, at home it’s poop and on the side walk it’s $@#$#. My 2 yr old told me that the doggies need to wear diapers or poop in the potty not on the sidewalk. Hillarious!

  10. Me says:

At least they’re putting it in bags so you don’t get it all over your shoes – I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked down the sidewalk & had to swerve to avoid piles of dog crap D:
people nowadays have no consideration for anyone but themselves

  11. CARYN MCCARTHY says:

I LIVE IN A NICE AREA AND SOME IDIOT THINKGS IT MUST BE FUNNY TO LET HIS/HER DOG POO ON THE GRASS OF THE CONODS AND THEN LEAVE A NOTE THAT SAYS ‘MY OWNER IS LAZY’!!!! DIGUSTING. I THINK THAT HIS/HER FACE SHOULD BE RUBBED IN IT. IF YOU CANNOT PICK UP YOUR DOG POO, THEN YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE A DOG!

  12. CARYN says:

  13. Alex says:

I’ve taught kids that littering is bad, and I’ve also taught them that if you see some garbage, don’t complain about it and walk past it – PICK IT UP – that’s what mother earth would want.

Tim Cups are another story – people see “please play again” and toss their cups out the window of their car.

And on the third note, I think people who throw cigarette butts out the windows of their cars should be fined $200.

  14. Sally says:

Good then Alex would you and your kids like to come to my town and spend the day picking up sh*t? Cause I dont.

    😀

  15. Gnorman says:

So does this mean that we are also taking to task all the irresponsible Tim Hortons coffee drinkers that insist upon dumping their cups in my neighborhood – which will not decompose? I would never leave my dog’s poop bag (biodegradable) on the sidewalk, since it’s my dog and my responsibility. It could be worse – these could be cat owners that let their felines roam the streets unsupervised urinating and defecating anywhere they please. And if you think I’m picking a fight with cat people, you’re absolutely right. Oh, and I think “feline” is Latin for “shiftless ingrate.”

  16. Lisa Hallman says:

Around here we all poop on the lawyers lawn… lol. But we pick it up and throw it out. Still pooping on the lawyers lawn is funny.

  17. Alex says:

Sorry Sally, you will have to be responsible for your own neighbourhood.

  18. HelenaZAE says:

    Agreed Gnorman!
We have a fully fenced backyard, so I thought I was safe letting my kids play – NOPE! I turned my back and my 1yr old had CAT CRAP in his hands ready to put it in his mouth. UHG! I hate cats – Absolutley dispise them and the owners who let them roam free to crap everywhere and anywhere. Dogs get walked so why they hell can’t cats! Pet owners in general should clean up after their pets. I would loose my kids if I let them poop in the yard or on the sidewalk, same should go for cat and dog owners. I choose to have kids so I clean up after them! If you choose to have a pet CLEAN UP after them or get rid of them!

  19. hjen says:

so.. I live in scarborough ontario.. Im a small chihuahua owner.. and my condo area..omg.. they installed a doggy poop station(a metal garbage bin with dog poop bags) because NO ONE SEEMS TO PICK UP AFTER THEIR DOG! like.. we have this little park thingi around my condo area…and every step you take, you;ll see dog poop.. if there were doggy poop bags..then fine..but dog poops..and they are not “small ones” they are the “large” ones where its like same size as human poop..GAWD I always have to watch where im stepping when i walk my dog.. and even my dog does that too!! we are walking all over the place avoiding stupid poops.. ugh so gross

  20. Me says:

Caryn, there’s a good chance it’s not the dog’s owner leaving the note – I bet it’s someone else who’s sick of inconsiderate dog owners.

Gnorman – as a cat person, I don’t take any offence to what you wrote. Mainly because my cats have always been (& will always be) indoor cats. I can’t stand people who let their cats run wild – it’s bad for the cat & inconsiderate to the people who have to listen to them fighting & yowling all night, saying nothing of the cat crap. (although the concept of getting indignant about cats but saying nothing of skunks, raccoons, & other wild animals crapping in the yard amuses me)

  21. JEnn says:

Despite what some people believe (ahem Jen above), dog poo does not make good fertilizer. Dogs have a lot of meat in their diets so it doesn’t fertilize well at all and can take quite a while to decompose. For the same reason, we don’t fertilize lawns, gardens, and parks with human poo. If you don’t want to see people poo everywhere then don’t leave your dogs crap where people walk and kids play. If you are hiking out in the absolute middle of nowhere where there isn’t an abundance of dogs pooping then that’s different. Then it has the time to break down to “fertilizer” before someone steps in it. Cow and sheep poo is used for manure in gardens because they are herbivorous and their excrement does make great fertilizer. So unless you have a pet sheep pick up your pet poo! This also goes for everyone who lets their cats out. I’m tired of picking up the neighbour’s cats’ poo from my garden. It is not fertilizer!

  22. Sally says:

I have indoor cats, but I once had a dog as well, and I always picked up its poop in the bags and threw them out in a appropriate garbage.

It might not be cat poop on your lawn, could be raccoon feces which is pretty dangerous for worms and other diseases.

You cat haters however have given me an idea. Next time I see someone throw a poop bag on my lawn I am going to follow them home and later on return with my dirty kitty litter and dump it on theirs.

  23. Me says:

Sally, I seriously love your idea.

  24. Lori says:

It drives me batty when people don’t pick up after their dog(s) but it drives me even battier when people do but don’t throw out what they picked up. However, when I see bags on the ground near a garbage can I let it go because maybe they thought they got it in but they missed or maybe they were in the can but fell out when the can was being emptied into a garbage truck.

  25. Jeannie says:

Sad how most of us complain about dog poop everywhere. Nearly every park, or walkway I stroll by, I always have to jump to avoid the poop. I’ve confronted many dog owners who said they don’t care (and most pretend not to see their dog go). Cities say they fine owners who are careless, but they don’t really do anything about it because they would have to catch the person in the act. I had an upstairs neighbour who let her dog crap in our common laundry room. Talking to her had no effect, so one day I picked it up and threw it at her. After she had to clean it up everywhere, she never let that dog in our common room again.

  26. macw1960 says:

We have a dog but we do clean up after her. Dog owners that don’t poop and scoop soon learn to carry a bag with them when they are caught especially when you offer them a bag. Never mind that they were going to walk all the way home for one. It got cleaned up. They still walk this way but now with a bag.

  27. Sophia says:

It’s so inconsiderate of those people!! how would they feel if others tossed poop bags onto their lawn and trees?! Hope dog owners can be more responsible.

  28. Amanda says:

Why anyone would want a pet where they have to pick up their warm goopy poop is beyond me – but I agree – why even bother picking it up just to leave it hanging?

  29. Amanda says:

Oh and when our neighbours dog poops on our lawn, my hubby just uses his shovel and flicks it on their driveway. We bought a house without a sidewalk so we don’t often get passerby dogs…

  30. Amanda says:

I am starting to wonder where you all live. City people? 18 piles of poop on a 20 min walk? craziness

  31. Sunny3 says:

I live near a conservation area heavily polluted by poop in and out of bags. There’s a pile every couple of feet. I like to do bird watching from my window except on weekends i get up to 3 different cats a day. People don’t hesitate to toss cigarette butts and they cost so much money to clean up including for forest/ grass fires. Since so much litter is take out containers, perhaps there should be an environmental fee. A lot of cities will have a clean up day usually in April or May. Bring your kids- it’s a teachable moment for everyone and a gift to ourselves, our future generations, our neighborhood wildlife, and mother earth.

  32. Carol says:

I have a dog and always stoop and scoop … the only exception being when I have used the last bag and forgotten to refill my holder! That happened the other day and I was so embarrassed! I walked my dog home, grabbed a bag and went back and scooped. There’s no way I would leave it there … that’s just disgusting to leave it on someone else’s lawn. If you have a dog you have to have the responsibility to stoop, scoop and (apparently) take it home with you! It would never occur to me to leave the bag behind. Weird.

  33. Patrick says:

In Toronto we have a bylaw: Excrement must be picked up immediately on public or private property. Fine: $245 – according to Toronto Animal Services. So it is illegal not to “stoop-and-scoop”. I think the way it works is that if you catch someone (find out where they live), they are first warned and fined if it happens again. The downside of this is that I’ve never seen that actually happen in years of seeing owners letting their dogs defficate in parks where children play, on sidewalks and on people’s property. In the Beaches area (before designated dog areas), they apparently had control officers to enforce the bylaw, but these “officers” had no authority to detain or even demand identification so the offenders ignored them. I have a dog myself and consider myself a very responsible dog owner, but I’m also seeing an increase of dog poop bags just left there sometimes just yards from a designated disposal. Maybe someone out there as some inside advice on how to proceed in the event you see someone actually doing it.

  34. Whatsup says:

I used to work in the parks department of a established municipality and let me tell you I lost all faith in humanity when it comes to dog owners and the complete lack of respect for the environment and their surroundings. I would pick up truck loads of dog poop with and with out dog poop bags. Now dont get me wrong their is a large population of responsible dog owners but their is an even larger population of irresponsible dog owners. I still see it now everywhere I walk. A kid cant be a kid and roll around in park grass anymore because 9 out of 10 times they will roll around with dog poop. Heck some owners think their little furry bundle of joy is too good to poop on grass and make it poop right on the side walk and then proceed to leave it their. 🙁

  35. clay says:

I went out for a walk last night and saw a bag of poop on someone’s front lawn. And I thought the same thing as most people have posted: Why would you even bother to bag it if you are just going to throw it back on the lawn??? So disrespectful and irresponsible. If your dog poops, pick it up and dispose it!

  36. Amy says:

I hate cleaning up dog poop, I have 2 dogs and i couch and make faces sometimes do a little dance but i still pick it up. a lady once laughed at me when she saw what i was doing and i’m like hey at least i’m cleaning it up!
when i first read this post i thought it was about the empty pooper bags, becauselast week i dropped half of my pile of bags and noticed as i was coming back from the garbage can. I have left my poopers in the tree before when we are at the forest my one dog poops in the same spot and it’s right at the beginning so when we are done and on the way back to the car we pick it up…always
but i rather have the person leave it in a bag then not pick it up at all much more noticeable in a bag, less liekly to step in it

  37. Tlvincen says:

I have a dog and we walk 4 times a day – she only poops on walks! I would never, could never, have never left her poop without picking it up. Whether I am at the beginning of our walk and have to hold the poop for 30 mins or am next to a garbage can I carry the bag until I can get rid of it. In my opinion, this IS what a responsible pet owner does. I don’t leave it on the ground, or in a tree even if I think I will be passing that spot again and will “grab it on the way back.” What if i forget? What if the wind blew it away? Like come on people – pick it up and throw it out. It’s amazing how many piles of poop I pass just left on someone’s lawn or in a park. These are probably the same people whose dogs poop in the backyard and their owners only pick it up once a month! Ewwwww!!!

  38. outdoorsygal says:

Every spring I go for walks too. Some people join a gym – I cannot afford such luxury. I get plenty of exercise lugging my garbage bag lined bundle buggy with me, donning gloves and picking up garbage and recyclables. I am glad that you addressed the dog poop baggies. I do not understand what kind of mentality would think that it is okay to leave it roadside in the first place. I have picked up lots of these and placed them in a separate bag. If it bothers you so much, instead of walking by it and lamenting, PLEASE pick it up and dispose of it. You can also teach you kids to pick it up and dispose of it and maybe they will address this at school as well, potentially helping others to learn that it is not okay to leave the poop bags roadside! It really is a “class act” to pick up garbage and ALL who drive by will see you and perhaps get the underlying message as well. Something to think about – pick it up and urge your municipal government to make littering a bylaw with stiff fines!

  39. Samantha says:

I just got back from the UK yesterday and visited one of the local beaches whilst there and yep that problems exists there too……a full bag of dog poop picked up off the beach but subsequently dumped on the coastal pathway a mere 50′ from the dog loo garbage…..

  40. AmberLab says:

You own a dog? Suck it up and clean it up. And I’m not sure why people think cleaning up dog poop is such an ordeal. You bend down, baggie over your hand, grab it, flick the bag over, knot and toss in a can. No muss, no fuss. I did this for 13 years. Now, try to contain the clean up of a wriggling baby who had an ass-plosion, then you can complain. It makes cleaning up dog poop a walk in the park. 😛

  41. Leslie says:

I don’t have a dog because I don’t want to be responsible for vet bills, poop, etc. I have had enough in my life of things that poop. I’ve done my poop duty. My husband and I were talking about growing up in the 70’s, and every spring the snow would be melting, and one would have to side step every few feet because of the dog dung in the sidewalks…not so, these days. It’s nice, but my grandfather would roll in his grave if he heard people actually stopped to pick up dog poop! HA! HA! HA!

  42. nisiepie says:

cats don’t have this problem. they are far more civilized, even more civilized than the shmucks who think they’re awesome cause they own dogs.

  43. Palmer says:

Just this year we were suddenly seeing dog poop bags sitting on side of road while we walked our dog. Then the next day another one left in same spot. Now who goes through the time to bag their dogs poo and then leave the bags on side of road? Weird right? Might as well not even bag it then because it sure wont biodegrade anytime soon in the bags! Oh and what’s even more weird is that we are out on a country road with lots of trees and big wide ditches and really most people dont pick up dogs poop because its not the city, you dont see it in ditches and in trees. So yes the filled poo bags really stand out and are weird. People are crazy.

  44. Skittles says:

We did a shoreline cleanup last fall and that was the “garbage” item we found the most of…thrown into the treed areas, throw in behind park benches…even though there’s even garbage canisters along the pathway people still can’t walk the 100m to throw it out…

  45. HelenaZAE says:

I live in a residential area of dartmouth NS.
18 piles is discusting and I’m tempted to follow one of these dog owners home and leave on of my kids poopy diapers in thier driveway!

  46. Tiana says:

LMAO to those who think dog poop doesn’t need to be picked up because it’s supposedly a great fertilizer! Ignorance is such a bliss

  47. JEnn says:

Don’t get me wrong Sally. I do love cats. I have two INDOOR cats of my own. It’s not the cats fault at all. It’s the owners who let them out to roam the residential neighbourhood. Just like it’s the owner’s fault for either not picking up the dog poop or wasting their time picking it up and leaving the bag behind. Why even bother? I do know it’s cat poo in my yard because I’ve watched them in their favourite spots. Plus we don’t have racoons in the Badlands yet. I’m sure they will show up eventually but none as of yet.

  48. Brock says:

How is a blog about picking up dog poop relevant to the people who frequent smartcanucks.ca? If you’re not telling me how to save on dog poop bags, blog it elsewhere.

  49. Cigale says:

    Brock, sweatheart.

I love it when SmartCanucks does these little “parallel universe” conversations, especially since SmartCanucks is not the marketing tool of some big company. Right? (Please don’t tell me that you’ve been bought by Nestlé or something to that effect). It’s Canadian. And topics that are a little off-topic makes it a little more homespun and a little bit less Martha Stewartish… refreshing and nurturing. Puts a zing in my day…

    Aaah! Dog poo.

I love to see a dog off leash dashing gleefully under the watchful eye of a responsible owner. But…

I creatively put up some WANTED signs with a picture similar to the giant weinheimer (55-82 lbs is the range of an adult) that I saw running, pausing, pooping and dashing back down the hill in my neighbourhood. How else could I alert the owners of what I had witnessed? My cry of “dog on the loose”, quickly followed by “your dog is pooping” had not been heard.

I picked up the poop since I don’t think that they would have found a “my owners are irresponsible” note next to the poop…

  50. Sally says:

Brock, off topics are a part of Sc. Cigale, not owned or sold to anyone! We are independent 🙂

  51. Jenny says:

“we don’t fertilize lawns, gardens, and parks with human poo.”

Sad to say. Yes, we do. I used to work a sewage treatment plant. After processing the waste water into drinking water the resulting Sludge is then spread onto farmer’s fields as fertilizer for food crops. At least in Ontario.

My sister uses the doggy poop bags.. and hers are “biodegradable” perhaps people don’t understand that process is not instant but will still take years.

  52. vibrantflame says:

Surprisingly it’s not really an issue in my town. Like you’ll come across some poop here and there, but nothing big. Even our park (which is huge) is very well taken care of, we’ve lived here for over a year and I’ve never seen poop in the park (‘cept for goose poop lol). Which now that I think about it, is pretty amazing!

  53. Alex says:

Dogs pooping on a lawn are almost as bad as wasted men relieving themselves on my fence just because they have the plumbing to do so. Ick. Until people figure out what is polite and proper, we can’t expect dogs to know any better.

  54. D says:

When I used to have a dog I would pick up after him 100% of the time. Angers me to see other owners around my neighbourhood not doing the same. Now I have to watch where I step when I’m walking across the grass to the sidewalk. And the thing that gets me is that this owner purposefully walks away from his house to let his dog go near my house and then goes home. I’m just going to call my city to see if there’s any fine that can be imposed on this dog owner.

  55. seida says:

I would like to meet the person who lets there dog poop on the sidewalk infront of the school… so that when the bells rings we all have to cross the street so we dnt have to take a wiff of it…..or who is the person who lets there dog take a crap right outside the door of the apt building…like serously we have a huge unused patch of grassy land special for your dog…..and on your way back toss the S$$t in the dumpster……like if i can wipe my kids butt after he uses the bathroom and dispose of it properly…then really…u sleep with the animal in your bed….yuck…get ur clean on if u treat it like ur own child

  56. Nucleii says:

Though this information was old, I think that Paris, France is still probably doing it. I have heard on TV that Paris city council have made a service of dog poop cleaners and make the citizens paid by probably tax or something. It was beneficial to both parties as citizens do not need to pick the poop up and jobs are made.
