Dollarama Recall: Huggies Pure Baby Wipes & Merida Cleansing Wipes

Other / Canada

DollaramaHuggies

Huggies Pure baby wipes and Merida Cleansing Wipes (makeup remover / cleanser) sold in Dollarama stores across Canada have been recalled due to unsafe levels of bacteria.

The bacteria include various types of Staphylococcus, which can cause infection for those with a compromised immune system or if used on open cuts.

These recalls do not impact other Huggies products sold in Canada, they were bought in the UK by a middle man then sold to Dollarama and they say they passed safety tests when leaving their facility so may have been improperly stored.

Grrrr!!!! No wonder my poor baby had such a bad rash on his bum! Of all the times too! I never use actual wipes! But I happened to buy some for convenience during a busy time 🙁 My poor baby.

Never buy anything that goes on the skin at Dollorama such as cream, soap, shampoo, makeup remover, anything! Also any food. I even advised my dad against buying clothes there. “you might itch” I told him lol! One wonders why Dove sells for $1 at Dollorama, but it’s $6 at Pharmaprix- I tend to think counterfeit.
I only buy wrapping paper, bows, cards, hangers…things like that. At some point, they had call backs on their plastic plates! Never trust Dollorama. Cheap yes. But can be lethal.

  3. FallenPixels says:

The article mentions tampons that were sent for disposal because they did not pass quality checks showing up in Dollarama too

I agree with Kay. Nothing sold in the dollar stores is really regulated. Prob lots of lead etc in all that stuff. I don’t buy the food, nor anything for little babies. I did though use the makeup remover wipes a couple of times! Yikes. Haven’t in over a year though

Read labels at Dollarama as most items are made in China. If you are daring enough to buy food there, please make sure you check to see if it was imported from or made in China. If something says manufactured in Canada, you are still not safe as ingredients can be imported. I would also caution against buying kids costume jewelry because of lead content.

The reason most “name” items are cheaper at the Dollar store is because they are not actually the product you would expect them to be. Look closer, look at the full product name and the spelling. There is usually a slight difference to indicate that it is not the so called name brand its pretending to be.

Come on folks… almost all of the stuff you’re buying these days is MADE IN CHINA, Dollorama or not ! And I remember a massive recall of beef meat last september, thanks to one of our good and canadian companies… Crap is every where.

  7. Sandra5 says:

Bacteria, shmacteria, I’m still gonna buy stuff from Dollarama.
So-called high end companies recall stuff all the time, I don’t think Dollarama is any worse than the rest of them. Heed the recalls, and you’ll be fine: no need to get all paranoid about Dollarama, or shopping in general.

  8. Mike says:

u guys are so funny why are you blaming dollarama on a kimberly clark product?
There is no shipping problem like they say if yes then you would have the same problem when you buy it where you keep it does it say on the wipe a temp it needs to be at?
Dollarama is cheap B/C they are the biggest retailer in canada and they got buying power
Common geeks wake up and smell the coffee Dollarama is a awesome place to shop

Apparently much of the merchandise at these discount stores (anyone remember Bi-Way?) is rejected merchandise. So, while it did not meet the manufacturer’s requirements to sell to their buyers, it still passes muster. BUT once it’s sold, it’s how the new purchaser stores/transfer the products that can be problematic. A lot of the brand clothes @ Bi-Way used to smell musty for example. If you look at lotions on the shelves at the discount stores, you can often see separation of contents. That’s poor storage. Even the fruit/veg you buy at your favourite chain grocer can get damaged due to poor temp control (too much ice/too little air circulation). It’s a crap shoot.

I agree with Kay. Don’t ever buy these items from any dollar stores. I wouldn’t buy any food items either. Toys and dishes are probably filled with lead as well… I only ever buy stationery.
@Mike. Most products do have a range of temperature in which it needs to be kept at all times. They are not labelled for consumers because it is very rare that the product can reach 50 degrees at retail or at home, but because it is very common when they are delivered by trains or trunks. Boxed soup are often more expensive than canned soup because they need to be kept cool during shipping, otherwise they would explode. The temperature range is always made cleared to the dealers. Even pens, paper and notebooks all have a temperature range, otherwise the glue will melt and and everything fall apart. Likewise with cold, a lot of plastics become fragile under -20 degrees.

Agree with Esme, made in china is really not the problem here. Let me remind you that Apple iPhone is made in China. They are superior products. It is often the design and management that screw up everything.

Thank you for posting this!! I bought a package “to see” what the difference might be with the bigger-store wipes, and fortunately I haven’t opened the package yet. Too bad I can’t return it!!

  13. Ang says:

Why couldn’t ya return it. If u just bought it surely u have a receipt.
