Fall Boot Trends – 2011

Other / Canada

Since chilly weather accounts for the majority of the Canadian year, one of the quickest ways to transition your wardrobe is with a great pair of boots! So here are some inspirational looks for the upcoming season…

Over-The-Knee Boots

I’m always conflicted about this trend as I’m under 5′ tall. A couple of years ago, I did own a pair of FLAT over-the-knee pirate boots, but a heel probably would’ve helped to lengthen my legs.

These laced-up, heeled Dior boots look KILLER…in a good way. What I do like about this particular pair is that they’re jeweled-toned which is much better than black all over!

Mary-Jane Boots

From Prada’s F/W2011 RTW collection, this is more of a personal entry than a fashion trend as I doubt many people would be able to afford $2400US+ (snakeskin) or even a measly $1500US (suede).

I love the ultra-feminine style, colour combination, and use of different textures of leather! Actually, there’s nothing that I dislike about them. 😉 The only thing that I can think of is that they aren’t as practical as they are fashionable, especially on wet days.

Click here to ogle at the various colour/leather combinations.

Riding Boots

a.k.a. Field Boots, they’re traditionally flat, although some designers have decided to put a twist to the look – and torture for the feet of fashion slaves – by adding a high heel, most of the time stiletto. 🙁 Ouch!

I’ll trade in the stiletto heels for these other details: nice, metal harness around the ankles, partial lace-up, Spanish Cut, or a classy buckle around ankles or calves.

Aside from the rigid leather, Riding Boots look fairly easy to wear.

Booties

(Ignore the pump on the bottom right-hand side.)

Forgoing the lace-up stiletto booties, these sleek, lower-heeled booties are more my style! Think Acne, Alexander Wang, Jil Sander, or the chocolate brown ones with studs, zebra print ponyhair, or black pull-on ones, etc.

Simple, easy to walk in, and hopefully won’t make my legs look frumpy-stumpy!

So ladies, before the first leaf hits the ground, can you please place all those UGGs, Hunters, faux fur moccasins in an incinerator?  Notice how none of them made it onto my list or these…

Vibram FiveFinger Boots

Nasty. Unsightly. Who were these intended for??

I saw something similar to the Five Finger boots a few wks ago while I was at a party. One of the guests was wearing Five Finger shoes. I thought they were the most intereting thing. So I asked and I was told he bought them at Novaks and they are mainly for running to make you run like you are barefoot. I hope the boots aren’t the same-I wouldn’t want to feel the cold snow.

By the way that pump is very nice!

I appreciate when people want to wear nice boots like these as they look quite nice I however enjoy my Ugg like boots. I am a mother of 2 young girls so when I’m going out on a school run in the winter or to sit in a cold hockey arena early in the morning I care more about how my feet feel than how they look. Please don’t slam those of us who like the comfort of boots like these.

  4. Toni W says:

In Edmonton, none of those boots would be very impractical- last winter we had three feet of snow in the yard, and temps of -30C. Sexy as those boots are, bring on the warm Uggs!

  5. Carrie says:

Way to high heels for me i would end up in a snow bank. Wheres the Surells – aren’t they fashonable – well okay not so much.

  6. caroman says:

the five toed boots are for people who want to feel like a bear. a really ugly one at that

  7. Stephania says:

I love my Sorels – warmest boots I have ever owned, but I guess I wanted to push off on thinking about WINTER WEAR!!!

Sorels = practical, but certainly not fashionable!

  8. Pandora says:

Wish there was something on here that I could wear. They look nice, but just not practical for someone that has to worry about falling.

  9. Natty says:

The Dior boots look amazing! If only I had money and some extra height.

  10. kathyo says:

Hmm, boots for Frodo the Hobbit. Nice.

  11. BMyltoft says:

OMG The over the knee boots are gorgeous! 🙂

I got a pair of five finger shoes for general walking. It’s very comfortable like walking on bare feet. It takes while to get use to in the beginning just putting them on. As you need to fit every toe in it.

Some very beautiful shoes in here, I LOVE those over the knee boots, but could never wear them as I’m not good with thin heels and would be constantly tripping and falling. The riding boots however, are totally my thing, I’m getting a nice pair for the winter, and I also like some of those booties with the chunky heel…I loved when the chunky heel was in fashion and you could find it everywhere, but now it is harder.

  14. Kaguya says:

The five toe boots are kinda… strange looking! Eeep.

  15. jmac says:

The Five Fingers shoes (not the boots here) are great for water activities and climbing waterfalls. My boyfriend and I hiked up Trafalgar Falls in Dominica (think mud, wet slippery rocks) and we had no problem – some girls in our tour were wearing flip flops and they were definitey having trouble (I was scared for them). Anyways, because with the toes you can grip really well, so good for our purposes.

  16. Gottaluvnew says:

Don’t knock em till you try them. The five finger shoes are the most comfortable shoes I have owned. As for the look …. Think of them as a conversation starter…

  17. Princesstefer says:

Those over the knee boots are sweet, but my fave fall boots this year will still be my UGG cardies. Stinkin’ cute, especially over my 7FAM Roxanne skinnies. And though I think the Pradas are pretty, I don’t think I’d get much use out of them. I think booties look dumb on most people.

  18. Stephania says:

Admittedly, I do have a pair of UGGs which were purchased many years ago…before they became popular. And I don’t think they’re warm, at least not the ones with the standard sole. Anything colder than -10C and the cold shoots straight up the feet!

They’re comfortable, but only to a certain extent. My arches tend to tire in them due to the lack of support.

I haven’t worn them in at least the last 2-3 years ’cause they’re rampant, with every single tween wearing them in the mall. I just don’t feel comfortable supporting a trend once it’s everywhere.

  19. silverbullet71 says:

Nevermind how they look, wouldn’t your feet be frozen? How could one wear socks with these?? I don’t get it!

  20. Stephania says:

    @silverbullet – Maybe it’s for the toe socks? 😉

  21. Lisa Hallman says:

I own a pair of five fingers shoes. They are awesome, they make you feel like a kid again. I like them for feeling grounded. Vibram does sell toe sox for their shoes. I’m not sure if I’d want to do the books though, but I do imagine I’d have better footing in the winter with these. The toe shoe thing isn’t for fashion, it’s for practicality.

  22. c says:

WHY? who wants leather in between their toes? Seriously, if people want to go for that barefoot feel, why the heck do they not buy proper moccasins? They’re warm and comfortable.

  23. roseofblack25 says:

LOVE over the knee boots…need to own a pair but have too many shoes and boots already.

  24. Tess says:

I like the VFF boots. I’ve got three pairs of VFF shoes and I love them to bits and pieces. Easily the best, most comfortable shoes that I own. You don’t have to like how they look, you’re not wearing them. You should try a pair of VFF shoes – I bet your mind would change!

  25. luc says:

The Over-The-Knee Boots images shows as broken for me.

  26. Sally says:

Even if I had 1500-2400 to spend on boots I wouldn’t buy any sort of leather or suede. (I don’t believe in it, and can’t stand the smell) I love the snakeskin boots though as a pattern, I have a snakeskin top, gladiators, and three purses, all fake.

  27. Janetta says:

Hunter boots are great, I love them!
I’m a huge fan of rain boots in general. I can walk in soft mud and feel totally invincible. 🙂 Don’t have to worry about ruining those nice leather boots.

Speaking of which, a pair of equestrian style boots are always on my fall/winter list. They’re classic- so you can’t really go wrong with them.

I always have a pair or two of heeled boots as well for those in and out of the car, not much walking days.

All of the boots I wear have to be high. Not necessarily over-the-knee, but just under. They also have to fit my calf snug and not slouch at the ankles too much! I can’t wait for autumn. Hurrry upp!

Uggs and similar style boots are horrible for walking but great to wear while camping or when you’re at the cottage.
