Free Comic Book Day Canada: Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Free Comic Book Day Canada

Saturday May 2nd, 2009 is FREE Comic book day 😀

What is Free Comic Book Day?

Free Comic Book Day is a single day – the first Saturday in May – when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE to anyone who comes into their stores. You simply need to visit your local Comic Book store and pickup a few books for free.  Click here to find a comic bookstore in your Canadian town or city

The idea is to get new people into comic books by giving them a chance to read a few for free! There seems to be a belief that Comic books are read mainly by geeky males. Whether this is true or not I don’t know but it reminds me of this scene from my favourite Sitcom, The Big Bang Theory 😀

from my experience last year, CALL THE STORE FIRST.

because what happened to su, was we went to strange adventures in halifax, as it was listed as being a participating store, NO DETAILS. just that it was supposed to be saturday and sunday.

so my son who was 11 at the time, walks into the store, anc comes out empty handed. the guy tell shim it was earlier , and that they were set up on the sidewalk blocks and blocks away from the store and that all the comics were put away.

I stormed in, I said, look. it said online the store, and it was all day, not a certian time blocks and blocks away on a fricking sidewalk. and your going to tell me that you don’t have a free comic for tis kid????

he went out back and dragged out about 8 for my son to choose from.

next time, i’m trying the last game store on portland street. but i’m calling first. i hate bullshyat!

No, its not just nerdy guys that read comic books. I read quite a few different comic series currently and have even more that I’ve collected in the past. I haven’t been to a free comic book day before though, so I may check it out tomorrow.

My local store in Niagara Falls, the Neutral Zone is having a sale with items up to 50% off all weekend.

Oh and I also collect action figures and play video games. 🙂

I love Big Bang Theory…it’s right up there with ‘How I Met Your Mother’ for me.

My dad collects comic books, and he’s not nerdy. But I used to work with a guy that collected comic books and he was very nerdy!

It should be noted that it’s not just any comics that are free, it’s certain ones. They say “FREE COMIC BOOK DAY” at the top of them and will probably be set up separate from the others. There is usually a pretty good variety of them, I’m sad I won’t be able to go this year 🙁

I love the big bang too. I saw that episode already 🙂

Just got back from our local comic shop. The free comics were set up on a long table. We were allowed to choose up to 10 comics but they had to all be different. Had a great time. The workers were all dressed up as various comic book heroes. Thanks for posting! 🙂

Took my 4-yr old who loves comics, and was even more excited when he saw some for free. Found a great comic book store near our house, which we visited for the first time today and had a great experience. Nice staff and great selection of toys too! Look forward to next year! Thanks!

“Look forward to next year”? Trust me, Free Comic Book Day was not designed for people to swing by once a year and get as much free stuff as they can, though every comic store owner in the country can be sure that those sort of people will be there. Stores pay money for those comics, and it was intended as a marketing opportunity to bring potential customers into the store. The fact is, FCBD is an abject failure because while people love comics, they only love them for free. So when your store doesn’t participate next year, or the year after, or at some point they just give up, it’s because of people coming into the shop once every 365 for free stuff.

Thanks Simon…not that it matters but we do buy comic books on a regular basis, just not from that store, as we didn’t know it existed until now. We did make a purchase in addition to our free comic book, but my comment about next year is based more on the fact that they made it fun for my son. They took the time to explain the different comics they had, and why they have FCMD, as well as letting him play with figures they had in a display case. He never gets this type of attention at our other store and had a great time.
