Surprisingly, each time I activated a 3 month XLG code, leaving a credit card for auto renewal gave me an extra month.
So 3 x 3 months cards for $76.47 gave me 12 months of Xbox live gold and $45.30 in my Xbox account.
Pretty solid deal.
