HST Cheques Arriving Today (for Ontario)

hst

Today is the day to get your (first of three) HST transition cheque. If you filed your 2009 income tax and have direct deposit, you should of received it in your bank account today, otherwise there is a mailed cheque coming your way. The amount you get varies depending on your marital status, single people get $100 and couples/families get $330. There are three payments throughout the year.

It’s the government’s way of returning a small part of the taxes that we already pay to make us less angry about the extra HST that we are going to be paying on everything, like gasoline. So ya it’s nice to get some “extra” money but in the long run, we are going to be paying a lot more for everything.

  1. Finally! says:

    Got my cheque for $330!!!

  2. Brock says:

    Nothing yet for me

  3. CBSA01 says:

Is that $330 per person in the couple OR $330 for the couple as a whole?

  4. WAKEFORSOUL says:

I was wondering the same thing?

  5. Love Junkie says:

Just checked, +$100 in my account.

  6. honeydoo says:

^ohh me too.. thanks for the reminder to check online.

330 per couple would make sense if it’s 100 per single.

  7. Matty's Mom says:

    Nothing there for me yet!

  8. CBSA01 says:

I figured per couple. I received the chq and from talking to friends it seems all the women are getting the couple chq’s…the Government knows we are the ones spending the money lol.

    • Justine says:

I am a woman and only got $100. So I don’t think that’s true, it’s how you filed your income tax.. if you filed as single, single you will get.

  9. Peter says:

how do they decide which person gets the cheque if filed together,…for the $330???

  10. Peter says:

to elaborate…my girlfriend and I filed together as common law – she got the cheque direct deposited….how do they decide that. I am just curious.

    anybody know?

  11. Sally says:

Its just ridiculous anyways considering it was just hush money. We as a family will spend more then 1000$ a year on all the extra taxes.

  12. CBSA01 says:

Peter, same with my boyfriend and me. We filed common law and I received the direct deposit…..I’m holding onto it in the event I have to split it with him….fairs fair.

I’m curious too as to how they decide who receives the chq.

  13. M Cool says:

I checked my account and got nothing!

I learned this after calling and speaking to an agent that your income for 2009 has to be below 80,000 in order to be eligible. although it took me a good 10 tries throughout the day to get through as all I was receiving was busy signals when i dialed..

    • Justine says:

@ M Cool l- Hmm I thought it was under $160K to be eligible. Again, I am not sure of the details, please refer to the links posted.

  14. Sally says:

Peter, its probably a better idea to read the FAQ on the Ccra’s site rather then ask on here. http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/bnfts/rltd_prgrms/fq_sttb-eng.html

It states on there its whoevers taxes were asessed first….

Mcool, you could of saved so much time just looking it up online.

Nada for me in my account but only the UCTB is deposited in mine, not tax refunds, so I guess it will be coming by cheque.

  15. CBSA01 says:

    @Justine – what you don’t share?

    @Peter – found the answer:
    3. I am married. Will both my spouse and I get these payments?

No. For each payment period, one OSTTB payment will be issued for your family if you are married or living common‑law. The June 2010 and December 2010 payments will be issued to the spouse or common‑law partner whose 2009 return is assessed first. Similarly, the June 2011 payment will be issued to the spouse or common‑law partner whose 2010 return is assessed first.

    • Justine says:

@CBSAO1, my seriously comment was in regards to this comment from you “We filed common law and I received the direct deposit…..I’m holding onto it in the event I have to split it with him….fairs fair. “…. I was asking if you were serious.

  16. ChristieJ says:

Does anyone else think that HST isn’t really as big a deal as people are making it out to be for everyday expenses? I was thinking about it and it doesn’t really seem different to me. We already pay both taxes on pretty much everything we buy. I agree it’s going to add to services, utilities and home purchases. But c’mon…on everyday things does it even matter?

  17. Theresa says:

Mine was in my account today. I saw it this morning, and assumed that the government messed up. At worked I mentioned it and was told about the HST cheques. Guess that is what I get for watching CNN instead of Canadian news. Good old Dalton must be worried about the next election. No amount of money will make me vote Liberal.

  18. Sally says:

Christiej, Its going to make a huge difference dependant on your lifestyle. A lot of things were not charged both taxes on, that are now going to be taxed. Thus thats why families are getting $1000 dollars, thats because thats the minimum extra they figure we’ll spend more a year. Plays(any theatre) , haircuts, dry cleaning, internet, gas, heat hydro, landscaping, snow removal, hotels, taxis, home services such as plumbing etc, golfing, domestic air and rail travel, magazine subscriptions, resale of vehicles> this ones huge. You use to only have to pay 5 now youll pay 13. Gas (like we needed an increase) and so much more.

Heres a chart. You do the math.

  19. Eric says:

So wait, ontario’s getting these cheques in addition to the quarter-annually GST refund cheques, or do they not get those?

Neither my wife nor I get our GST OR income tax refunds. The gov’t takes everything away to pay towards our student loan debts.

  20. Nancy says:

If yours single and have a kid in the next few months do you get the 230 extra reimbursed to you?

  21. ThatguyRob says:

I got it deposited i was shocked to be honest lol.

  22. Sally says:

Ummn Eric, a lot of Ontarions DO NOT get a GST cheque. Thats based on way less income then this HST hush payment, so basically if you make ok money you DO NOT get an GST payment. Also the HST hush payment is only a 3 time thing.

Nancy, please read the FAQ link I posted.

  23. Brenda says:

Gotta roll with the punches. We in NB have been paying the HST for many years. I don’t know anyone who was ever happy about paying more taxes, but it’s a fact of life.

I want one of those HST cheques.

  24. Richard says:

I’ve missed the details on the HST rebates until I saw this post. Thanks.

I haven’t seen a GST cheque in years – I’m surprised that the salary cut off for HST for couples is so high; looks like my wife is going to get the cheques, as we just got her 2009 assessment back today.

  25. Sally says:

That means you wont get your HST cheque for another 4-8 weeks Richard, any income tax assesed after May 10th 2010 will take an additional procsessing period. 🙁

  26. Angie says:

Since the HST is also coming into effect here in BC on July 1st, I wonder if we too will receive cheques? I went on the ministry of revenue for BC website and nothing was mentioned there. *sigh* Just another perk from the Scambell cover up government.

  27. Jillei83 says:

i just checked my bank and got nothing. I checked my online CRA account and all it shows is that I`ll be getting a gst rebate on July 5th. Shuold I also have gotten the HST today – or do I only get the GST

  28. rishukhosla says:

    i got mine.

  29. CarlyinCanada says:

Got $100 today & spent $75 at SDM, LOL 🙂

  30. Greedy says:

Just another way of getting screwed, sure they give you $100 (Yippie) thats going to make a difference, heck why do we elect these idiots? Toronto has Smihtherman looking for votes, yeah right you screw over the health care
then want my vote… give your head a shake…

either way not a fan, not a fan of the government of ontario..

  31. heididesiree says:

if you owe money back for your taxes, around $50 will they just take it off the hst? i know they did it with the gst. i don’t want to pay and found out they took it as well. or have them hold it until i pay it. the money is nothing, i am just not sure how this hst works with owing money.
    any ideas?

  32. amycanada77 says:

heididesiree – if you owe money they will NOT take it offf your HST cheque – you must pay on your own

To others who were asking about GST cheques – yes it will still be getting them on a quarterly basis as per normal in ADDITION to the HST credit which is only a one time deal (so to speak) spread out over a year – but still a one time deal – whereas the GST cheques will stop coming quarterly once your income reaches a certain level
    http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/bnfts/gsthst/gstc_ncms-eng.html
those are the cut off levels 🙂
    hope that helps
spend your cheques wisely folks becuase Sally is right they won’t cover near the amount we will be paying OUT

  33. bb says:

Each HST cheque is a reminder how we got screwed. HST might be good for us only if business pass on the savings but I never saw a decrease in prices with the 5 cents for plastic bags (I just see prices on basics slowly going up) and I doubt I’ll see one for this either. Thank you government for ignoring the people when they said we didn’t want the HST.

  34. Shannon says:

It looks like I got $330 twice!?! In my own account, and in my old joint account–husband and I separated last year. I wonder if the one in the joint account is supposed to be for him and he didn’t change his direct deposit info. I’ll see if the bank can let me know the “name on the cheque”, since this is all electronic, I don’t know if they can tell me or not.

  35. Alex says:

“either way not a fan, not a fan of the government of ontario..”~Greedy says

I wouldn’t matter who was in power they would be doing the same thing.
This is an agreement that both the provincial Liberals and the federal Conservative that both have to give their blessing to move forward this merger.
Any provincial Conservative that is voicing disapproval is just doing it for political points. If they really were against it they would be voicing their critism against their Conservative cousins in Ottawa.
This wouldn’t have been possible if Brian Mulroney didn’t give us the GST in the first place.

“An elephant is a mouse built to government specifications”

  36. Laila says:

Yep. Got mine too $100 🙂 When’s the next HST deposit? I know the next GST deposit is on July 5th

  37. TJ says:

@ Laila ..the next one is Dec 2010 & the third ( last & final one ) is June 2011…nothing after that .

    Its $ 300 for singles in 3 X – $ 100 instalments .

    Its $ 1,000 for couples or single parents , $ 330 , $ 335 & $ 335

    June 10 2010 , Dec 2010 & June 2011 are the deposit dates for the 3 instalments .

  38. Celine says:

Got my $100, but what I don’t find fair is why, as a single mother, they don’t consider me as family…I have to pay everything on my own…

  39. Celine says:

Got my $100…but what I don’t find fair is, why as a single Mother I am not considered a family…I have to pay everything on my onw…always. I could sure use a $1000 instead of $300 for my child.

  40. momof2 says:

I am moving in 2 months to another province , got my cheque yesterday but I was wondering if I will get the others? I was thinking I will get the Dec. one because I filed my 2009 taxes, but I wont get the June one..

  41. Hockeymom73 says:

    celine

    9. How will the CRA determine if I am a single parent?
We will consider you a single parent if you are not married or living common‑law and either of the following applies:

On the specified dates mentioned in Question 2, our Canada Child Tax Benefit registry shows that you have care of a child under the age of 18; or
You have made a claim on line 367 – Amount for children on the applicable income tax and benefit return.

    momof2-
To be eligible for a particular OSTTB payment, you must meet all of the following requirements on the applicable above‑specified date:

    You must be a resident of Ontario;
You must be one of the following:
18 years of age or older,
    married,
    living common‑law, or
    the parent of a child under the age of 18 who is living with you;
You must not have been incarcerated for a period of 90 days or more that includes the specified date; and
You must have filed a 2009 income tax and benefit return for the June 2010 and December 2010 payments, and a 2010 return for the June 2011 payment.

  42. Christine says:

If I haven’t file my taxes, does it mean I won’t be getting the cheques. will I get it once I file??

  43. SueK says:

We lived in Nova Scotia when they harmonized the taxes – and brilliantly called it the Blended Sales Tax (BST) – HONEST! While the total tax amount went down to 15% combined, it hit and hit hard, especially on groceries, gas, clothing, school supplies, etc. Now, I realize Ontario is stone broke – which is why we now get transfer payments. So, there’s a purpose. BUT BUT BUT the timing is horrendous. And, let’s face it, after the third HST rebate cheque, the HST ain’t going away but the cheques are. Most people I know will be putting the money toward bills, debt, etc. RAther than purchasing goods and getting the money flowing in the economy. I swear, McGinty could be a conservative! LOL

  44. Romana says:

has anyone else not gotten theirs yet?

  45. amanda says:

    I haven’t either

  46. Jake says:

    I got mine yesterday.

We would still get the GST thing too?

  47. Karen says:

Angie, BC has already stated we wouldn’t be getting any kind of a rebate like Ontario. 🙁

  48. loveblue says:

is it 330 for a person…………..since my spouse got it ..under his name and tell me that is his .i thought that would be like a family .am i right?

  49. Truffles says:

Loveblue – It’s $330 for a family – that means the money deposited in your spouse’ account is for the two of you…

  50. Jacki says:

Ontarioers… I know some of you think that this money won’t make up for what you will end up spending on HST, but just realize that us in BC are having the tax come in on July 1st too and we are not getting a transition cheque at all. At least this way you are up either $300 or $1000; we will just be down the taxes we spend.

Thanks a lot BC. Way to live up to being a crappy province!

  51. Julie says:

Celine – if you meet the conditions set out in Hockeymom’s post, then I would contact the CRA about this one because I am a single mum and I got the family amount (divorced with a child aged 2)

  52. Caitfoster says:

Just to let you all know, they are saying that you will recieve your cheques between the 10th and the 26th.

I haven’t recieved mine either and when i called that is what I was told.

  53. motherof2 says:

I was just wonderin when I did my taxes my acct told me that I would get the HST for the family.. I dropped my son off at school yesterday and another mom said to me that she got her HST so I checked my acct and nothing… Still nothing and today my husband got it in the mail… He makes more then me… I thought for sure that the moms get it but I guess I was wrong in that thinkin… That suxs when u get told that u will get the HST and then the other person does… We filed the same time and was sent the same time and we filed as married…

  54. Ricko says:

My wife and I filed together (married) but all the refund was sent to my attention. The $330 was sent to me today. I also thought that the $330 was being sent to the wife, but I guess not.

  55. Richard says:

motherof2 – why would you assume that the mom should automatically get the cheque?

  56. shopaholiclq says:

I wouldn’t be so happy about the cheque…no HST on basic necessities like heating and electricity would suffice. People.. this is an 8% hike on utilities. I don’t recall the last time I got an 8% salary increase.

  57. cocacolakid says:

If anyone thinks this will help get “jobs” in Ontario–every company in Ontario, small business or large factory will pay 8% more $$$ in electic and heating and air conditioning–it will get passed onto the consumer–maybe not on July 1st–but soon. Also, most stores recieve deliveries by truck — 8% rise in fuel costs —something else to pass on… So those 3 little chegues may not look as good as the govt wants to them. I have a couple of friends trying to decide if they will be able to keep their business…
    (thanks for letting me vent!!!)

  58. Tray says:

If you haven’t filed taxes will we just get this after we file? Please don’t tell me I will miss out on this 🙁

  59. Bert says:

I have not had my HST refund deposited into account yet. Make way under 80,000 per year, filed taxes and have never had direct deposit problems. Seems like everybody had theirs deposited on June 10. Anybody who may be in same boat as I and why could that be?

  60. SarahLilly says:

I hjavent recieved mine yet- i was told by a friend that if you file your taxes late the cheque will still come but just later than others, i know i filed mine closer to the deadline so ill probably be getting mine next week, i also read online that it will be anytime between the 10th and 24th. SO it makes sense, if you filed early youll get it first, file later or closer to deadline it will be soemtime lol if you file later youll get it late

  61. kathyo says:

We got ours on Thursday, payable to my husband! $330.00.

  62. Ciel says:

I don’t know if the CRA is choosing to send couples’ cheques to the lower income earner in the pair or not. Seems there is variation as to which income earner collects it.

Single here-haven’t looked into my account and there was no cheque in the mail last week.

  63. JasonJJ says:

Whom receives the CHQ for the couples and married is determined by the CRA.

It’s stated that the first person Tax return completed for that couple, will be the one receiving the cheque.

My wife was not happy, she did not get the cheque 😉

  64. Tanya says:

Ya well this just bites for those of us in the rest of the country!! We have had the HST for years and we never got any kind of reimbursement to “help ease the pain” of the tax!!
Honestly, if a tax is charged in 1 province, it should be in all provinces, fair is fair!!!

  65. Lisa says:

My commonlaw and i don’t get Gst because of our combined income is too high. Husband made 42,000 and i made 22,000 for 2009. We also have 1 child 18 months old. We haven’t seen HST in our accounts either. There must be a certain amount you make in order to get it

  66. Don says:

I received this on friday. Yey! free $100 to be spent on video games. Who doesn’t love free cash?

  67. Sally says:

Its right in the FAQ on the CCRA. The person who gets the cheques in the family is the person whos income tax they asessed first, simple as that.

Lisa, if your income tax was filed on time and you get direct deposit for any income tax refund then your cheque should of been depo’d. If you do not get direct deposit for your income tax then it will be coming in the mail.

Btw Bc you may not be getting cheques (although I was reading their integrating it with gst refunds for lower incomes) but youll also still be paying 1% less then us on taxes. 🙂

  68. Caitfoster says:

    Tray…

I was told by the Income tax filer that the government is being tricky and you have to have filed by the April 30th cut off date to be eligable for the HST credit. They aren’t telling anyone that, but the guy at HR Block knew.

  69. Sally says:

In the FAQ Cait it says that but people who filed after April 30th will get it just not for another 4-8 weeks.

  70. Ryan says:

    WOW…..

I’ll mail all the HST “rebate” cheques back to the government with a big F-you on them. Just another way to milk money from an already dry reserve – the people in the working class. Tax my income, then tax the things I need to buy to live. And if by some reason I didn’t pay enough, send me a bill! Why not just convert to a socialist government and stop disguising our country as democratically free?

  71. Lianne says:

Um I have not recieved my hst cheque yet. My taxes were done on time, and everybody i know either had theirs on the 10th direct deposited, or by check on the 10 and 11th! Although today i recieved a paper from them saying i will be recieving the tax transition benifit, but no cheque attached?? Anybody in the same boat? or Does anyone know what is going on?

  72. Samantha says:

We are getting 3 payments of HST and that is it. No more HST Payments and No GST Payments. When the last payment comes everyone will be mad. Basically, with the 3 payments for HST the gov’t is giving you an equivalent of a year and a half of GST, then it is gone, both HST and GST payments will be nomore. 🙁 Not to mention paying 8% tax on items and utilities you haven’t had to pay the taxes on before. Not happy.

  73. avalon says:

I haven’t gotten mine either, and I’m direct deposot 🙁

  74. terri says:

hey i ddnt get mine at all three poeple thati know didnt get there at all i did my taxes on time

  75. terri says:

how do i know that im going to get one

  76. Graham says:

Samantha, if you read everything on this page, it says multiple times that the HST credit is being issued from the Ontario gov’t. The GST credit is being issued from the Canadian (federal) gov’t. Two totally separate rebates.

Although my gas, internet, hair cuts, gym fees, flights within Canada (originating from Ontario), (potential) hotel rooms& dry cleaning are going up, but I’m saving if/when I go to Maple Leafs, Raptors, Argos, Blue Jays or any other sporting events and on movie tickets by 2%!

The only real hit to my own personal pocket would be on gas — an extra $140 for the remainder of this year or $336 for a total year. My average fill up is $40, so I’d only see an increase of $3.20. It’s not really noticeable.. but I don’t have a family, and live in arrangements “all inclusive”. I don’t think this hits me as hard as everyone else.

FYI, when they said they were creating this tax, what exactly is it going to benefit? How is creating more tax in people’s lives going to create jobs? They said our income tax is going to be reduced? When, and by how much? I don’t see any gov’t site saying how much a typical $40,000 a year income earner will save on their taxes.

  77. Charlotte says:

This tax hike feels horrible right now, but considering in Ontario we have been granted a tax decrease over the few years despite a provincial debt.. well, what did you think was going to happen?

It’s not like I want to pay extra taxes on anything, but I would rather pay tax than have our government act like the US and spend regardless of budget or tax money. If this tax will help balance the budget, that is a good thing in the long run.

  78. DG says:

Haven’t got a cheque yet. I’m wondering if they will keep the money as my husband still owes student loans but mine are paid in full? I usually get the child tax benefit but not GST. Our combined income is below the $160K threshhold and our taxes were filed in late February/early March. They kept my husband’s refund and applied it to his student loans and I got the balance of my refund after they paid the little bit I had owing on my student loans. Any ideas? Should I expect a cheque and if so, when? Should I call someone?

  79. Mark says:

    Lianne,

Yes I also did not get my cheque or deposit but did get a note from Dalton saying I would be getting the HST rebate… I filed on time.

  80. Patti says:

People, if you did not get a rebate as of this date, revenue canada is holding it up. YOu have to call and fight with them.

Also, single parents should be getting the 330.oo deposit, not the 100 dollar deposit, they may be single but they are ”families’. So if you only got 100.00 and you have kids, raise a stink about it!!
Or contact Premier Dalton McGuintey @ http://www.premier.gov.on.ca/feedback/default.asp and let him know all about it 🙂

  81. Taxed says:

We will get $1000 to offset new HST, yet you will be giving it all back when you spend your $$$$ with HST added to your purchase and you will need to declare it as income for 2010 on your next return and pay taxes at your tax rate. Gone before gotten.

  82. What the? says:

I’m a single Parent of an 18 year old that works full time before going off to university this fall. I received my $100 and my daughter who earned over $9,000 last year received her first cheque for $100 but now she gets a letter form the government that she is under 19 and doesn’t qualify for a cheque. So now I have to appeal their decision to not allow her as a dependent to get the specified family amount. I just can’t wait for them to tell me that working 18 year olds have no rights in Canada. WTF!!!!!

  83. Grahame says:

This is about creating jobs and putting people back to work. Within 10 years our comprehensive tax package will create nearly 600,000 new jobs, attract $47 billion in new business investment and increase wages.

The HST is part of this comprehensive tax package that will see 93 per cent of Ontarians receive personal income tax cut. With these cuts Ontario now has the lowest provincial tax rate in Canada on the first $37,106 of taxable income. In fact, 90,000 low-income Ontarians will no longer have to pay Personal Income Tax.

To help families we have introduced a permanent $260 Sales Tax Credit for low- and middle-income adults, children and seniors. In total $4.2 billion in transition payments will be delivered to help Ontarians adjust to the Harmonized Sales Tax. It is important to remember that every $100 in tax relief is equivalent to the 8% tax on $1250 in newly taxed items.

We are exempting children’s clothing and footwear, infant and child care seats, diapers, books, food under $4, newspapers, and feminine hygiene products, from the provincial portion of the HST.
