IKEA Canada Launches NEW Veggie Hot Dog!

IKEA Canada launches NEW veggie hot dog at Bistro locations from coast to coast! Made with kale, red lentils, spices and more for only 75 cents! The plant-based veggie hot dog furthers IKEA’s ambition to offer delicious and affordable food that has a positive impact on people and the planet.

Based on the vision to create a better everyday life for the many people, IKEA Canada introduces the delicious, affordable and more sustainable veggie hot dog at the IKEA Bistro for 75 cents. Developed closely with suppliers, the final plant-based veggie hot dog recipe includes kale, red lentils, carrots, ginger, quinoa, onion, potatoes, various spices and is served with mustard, red cabbage and roasted onion. The result is a delicious veggie hot dog with a carbon footprint that is approximately 7 times less than the classic hot dog.

“The new veggie hot dog helps us cater to the needs of more of the many people at our Bistro locations – for vegetarians or those looking for a delicious plant-based alternative that’s convenient and truly affordable,” said Brendan Seale, Head of Sustainability, IKEA Canada. “Our aim is to provide food options that are healthy, delicious, and good for our planet and so we are proud to introduce the veggie hot dog.”

The iconic hot dog has a long history within IKEA and will continue to be served in the IKEA Bistro. In the 1980’s Ingvar Kamprad set the price of the IKEA hot dog at 5 Swedish Krona – which was half price compared to competitors in Sweden at that that time. Today IKEA is one of the biggest hot dog vendors in the world selling more than 100 million hot dogs every year, 3.4 million of which were sold in Canada alone in 2017.

In 2015, IKEA launched the veggie ball as an alternative to its iconic meatball in its restaurants. The introduction of the veggie hot dog is the latest step towards including a wider variety of healthier and more sustainable food choices. IKEA Canada has plans to roll out even more seasonal plant-based options in the Restaurant later this year.

    YESSSSSS 😀

As a vegan of 9 months I love this idea and the ingredients are unique too, not like every fast food’s basic veggie patty. I will go there as soon as I can and get a ton of them. Good job IKEA, and no chance of horse meat in them either.

As a vegetarian for a long, long time, I wonder how much sodium the hot dog contains. Most vegan foods always contain so much sodium, it’s really pathetic. I choose not to buy it, peanut butter is better alternative then sodium filled meat alternatives.

We tried these recently. They’re delicious and not at all greasy. They’re definitely not a ‘faux meat’, they are visibly vegetable based. My meat eating family loved them.

The person asking about sodium content made me curious so I looked it up. Ikea’s website says there is 230mg sodium in the veggie hot dog wiener; and 475mg sodium in the meat hot dog wiener.
