   At schools across Canada, these have replaced soft drinks under the assumption that they are more nutritious for kids. This is an attempt by educational institutions and their administrations to maintain their lucrative contracts with distributors such as Pepsi or Coca-Cola while presenting the facade of offering kids a healthy alternative. Despite the availability of free water, students down these on a regular basis, not because they need their electrolytes replenished (boy, Math must be much more physically exhausting than when I went to school), but because they’re sweet and taste good. PLEASE teach your children that we are lucky to have clean water whenever we want it, and that these drinks often do the opposite of what they claim: improve our overall health and well-being. For those of us old enough to choose wisely for ourselves, have at it. But kids aren’t able to discriminate as well as adults, and that’s why we need to help them make informed choices.

   Thanks for that but my kid’s a national athlete & definitely needs these for energy during extensive training.

   We went & bought a case today — watch the expiry dates — ours expire March 12 — less than a month. That should cover him & the other athletes for awhile — just didn’t want to take the chance of buiying too many & have them expire. If we need more, we’ll go back although supply is dwindlying!
