Lululemon Athletica Canada has recently been forced to recall over 300, 000 tops women’s tops due to injury hazard. The hard tips on drawstrings have been known to whip some wearers in the face, causing injury. When the drawstring in the neck area, which is often elastic, is pulled back or caught on something it could snap back and injure the wearer. So far there have been 5 reported cases of injury to Health Canada and 6 reported cases of injury to Lululemon, as well as an additional 7 reported injuries in the US.

The affected tops were sold for $75 – $260 between January 2008 and December 2014. There are estimated to be approximately 185,000 affected garments sold in Canada either in stores or on Lululemon’s website. There are many styles of garment which include this drawstring, including:

  • Carry and Go Hoodie.
  • Cool Down Jacket.
  • Course-ette Jacket.
  • Cozy Up Jacket.
  • Dance Studio Jacket.
  • Dance Sweat Shirt.
  • Don’t Hurry Be Happy Pullover.
  • Gratitude Wrap.
  • Necessity Jacket.
  • Proactive Jacket.
  • Refresh Snap Up.
  • Run Sun Blocker Pullover.
  • Run Track N Field Jacket.
  • Run With It Jacket.

If you need visual references, the US Consumer Safety Commission has posted pictures of many of the affected tops here.

If you own one of these tops, you are advised to stop wearing it. You can either remove the elastic string and keep wearing it, or contact Lululemon and request a new, non-elastic drawstring cord.

This is the 2nd large scale recall from Lululemon. in 2013 the company pulled a variety of yoga pants from its stores because they became transparent when the wearers bent over.  CEO Christine Day stepped down over the controversy. It’s unknown right now what the consequences of this second large scale recall will be.
