Moxies Canada

moxiesjpg

I’ve eaten about 5 times at Moxies over the years.  Apparently it’s always been too dark to see because until last night I never realized how revealing the waitresses dresses were.  This particular location was in London Ontario.  I ate my dinner watching the waitresses saunter  back and forth. They were all barbiesque looking women, long hair, very skinny, some had breast implants, the dresses were very low cut, and their panties were just about to show as they were cut so short.

Ok I get it, sex sells. But I was pretty sure I hadn’t stepped into Hooters, that would be a given.

While of course I thought about what if someone didn’t have a perfect body wanted to apply? I was also curious why the men weren’t being objectified.  Why didn’t they have to have hot bodies and muscle tees on? In fact the men working were just average skinny guys.  I realize this must be Moxies thing, but why not the men too?  Also I didn’t see a single girl in there with more then an ounce (give or take) of fat on her.  Have they been charged with discrimination before?

I’d love to read your thoughts on this.  Of course I’m not saying I hate it there, I would of gotten up and walked out if that was the case.  It simply raised  some questions. Am I not their target diner? If so then why was the majority of diners 25-60 year old women.

After I wrote this piece I did some more digging and found this quote from a Sun article.

*To be sure no ‘uglies’ even got an interview, Hawker said he and other front of house staff were directed to screen applicants coming through the door at Moxie’s, and mark resumes with a “110″ (one-ten) if they were unattractive. It’s an internal code for “do not call,” he said. (Put a diagonal line between the pair of ones and it forms ‘NO’).  Toronto Sun

Hmmn… maybe this chain won’t be my next choice..

the moxies where i live the girls wear pants…

  2. Sally says:

The waitress I talked to said there all supppose to wear these dresses (the one pictured above) but I swear I’ve been to a Moxies where they wore pants. Google images of Moxies, and you’ll see lots of their dresses.

  3. joeyworst says:

You think Moxie’s bad? The 2 times that I’ve been to Joey’s Tomato for the past 10 years, each time one of my kid is about 2 years old. They both asked me why the waitresses are naked.

  4. Kyla says:

Yeah that’s for sure true. The location closest to me requires a picture of yourself when you apply so they can hire you based on how attractive you are. *rolls eyes* I work with a girl who works there are well and her boss will fully ask her to wear a better push up bra, shorten the skirt, etc.

  5. Hikki_Passion says:

Well I got hired by Moxies and I know for sure I’m not gonna walk any fashion shows any time soon. As for the uniform, I was told to wear a black dress and heels or boots (as a Hostess). They obviously can’t force you to wear revealing clothes, so I’m guessing it up to the dressee what she wanted to wear. And when I got hired 1/3 of the new employees were boys so I’m not sure… maybe its the location? Mine was the Bramalea City Center one. I had to decline the position tho due to school work piling up so maybe they changed the rules in the restaurant?

    • Kelsey1324 says:

Hi Hikki_Passion, I’m considering working there but am afraid I wont fit the culture there. I’m pretty average, and a bit overweight even. What do suggest I do? It’s also the one in Brampton.

  6. Rebecca says:

My sister-in-law has worked at Moxies for over 4 years. Only the women in the bar dress in provocative attire. The regular waitresses wear long sleeved shirts & dress pants. She did say however, that Moxies is known for sex appeal, and they tell their staff to dress attractively. It says in their contract they have to be “sexy”. And she did tell me the 110 code for marking on resumes, which I find appalling.

  7. Sally says:

Thats really interesting Rebecca. I was in the bar longue area, so I guess that makes sense why I didn’t get anyone wearing clothes. There were at least 10 girls dressed in this washcloth 😛 That 110 code is so wrong.

  8. . says:

I worked in a restaurant with similar practices. We had a staff bathroom that was stocked – shelves of skanky tops, extra hairspray, gel, etc, makeup, accessories, heels… some girls came to work and got ready there, but sometimes if we weren’t looking hot enough the managers would tell us to go put on more makeup/fix our hair/change our shirt/etc. We went through a time where we had staff shirts – they gave me a size small. I typically wore a medium or a large at that point, and my breasts were FF.

It’s terrible, and I felt DAMN good when I quit and worked at a coffee shop. It was great to be able to go to work without makeup on sometimes. That being said, I made mad tips – not just from the young guys, from the families, etc, too. I was good at my job, my obviously appealing appearance gave me confidence, and it was fun to be ‘one of them’. It was great to get out, and I often refer to that job as saying that I had to sell my soul to work there… but I find myself missing it, lately.

  9. Tynomi says:

The 110 code is standard for a lot of retail and restaurant locations, not just Moxies. No one wants an ugly person serving them or selling them things.

  10. FatB says:

We got a fair number of Moxie’s at my location, and I can say that their employee dress code depends on location. Only person(s) that consistently dresses sexy in all of them is the front hostess.

  11. Connie says:

I’ve been thinking about this. White collar companies hire some jobs based on intelligence (because that improves their bottom line). Why would I be upset that Moxie’s hires based on looks (because I bet my bottom dollar that it improves their bottom line). But I am and I have no idea why.

  12. L says:

I’d rather be served by an ugly person than an egotistical B****….
I went to cactus club which is also notorious for this kind fo practice, the food was pretty gross, a good duck sandwhich, but so much mayo it made me feel like throwing up, so i picked the duck out, left the piles of sauce on the soggy bread and politely told the waitress there was a “little” too much sauce and mayo. was she ever a snarky little twit about it, she should have been polite and just let the chef know it was less than spectacular, but instead she tells me “THATS HOW ITS SUPPOSED TO BE MADE”… uh huh, the bread is supposed to be soaking and soggy and there is meant to be a half a cup of mayo on it, IM SURE thats how chef rob feenie designed it. wait a joke. And i will never go back to that cactus club…that being said, instead of having a cheap snarky tart take my order, i’d rather a polite plain jane as my waitress, any day, any time.

  13. Jdawg says:

When I go to an establishment such as Moxies with friends or co-workers I go for the atmosphere. This atmosphere includes attractive servers. Unattractive people can go work at Denny’s, I don’t see how anyone can have a problem with this kind of a hiring policy.

  14. jeo220 says:

I always question who the target audience is at these franchise restaurants. 20 year old men? 50 year old women? Mothers of 2? Children? Senior citizens? My point is there are fewer 18-25 year old men out there compared to all other age groups combined. So why do these restaurants always target a younger male audience?

Here’s a tid bit of info for all the managers, marketers and even waitresses who work in these restaurants: when I walk into an eating establishment with my husband (sometimes with the 3 kids, sometimes without) and I see some half dressed woman approach our table, I want to immediately LEAVE. Two things usually happen: 1) My husband tries desperately to look away from the naked girl who could very well be his daughter all the while hoping she is at least 18 2) I am trying to distract the children from looking at her mainly because I don’t want my 7 year old daughter to think that this is the way you dress in public. It is an uncomfortable experience for all of us!

I think perhaps a professional dress code would be more appropriate, especially in the restaurant portion of the establishment. I also feel that anyone should be able to get a job, regardless of their appearance. The 110 code is discrimination and the last time I checked, our country frowns upon discrimination of any kind.

I urge people to stand up for themselves. If you are a person who feels uncomfortable by the way servers are flaunting their goodies around your children, you should say something! Or, if you are a waitress who is leaving little to the imagination and you don’t like it, you should say something! I guarantee things would change if women stopped applying for these jobs or if people stopped eating at these restaurants. Majority always rules…..

  15. Louisa says:

Just curious what this has to do with coupons and deals?

  16. izawa says:

I don’t think this only applies to Moxies, a lot of restaurants does this. I don’t really see it as such a big deal, its not like we’re talking about hiring an astrophysician. There’s not that much “skill” to serving people to begin with and plenty of people are qualified for this job. If you have a choice of 10 women with the same qualification, why not hire the hot one?
    Blame society!

ps i do love Moxies though, for their food of course and I wouldn’t say the waitress there are all THAT hot…

  17. tudorchick says:

i don’t agree with only hiring quote unwuote attractive girls and dressing them up like s*anks.this is just me.kind of disgusts me,seeing the pictures of that uniform…i don’t get what above poster said about ugly people working at denny’s.i guess i didn’t realize ugly people have to work certain places in today’s world.i am not a beauty queen by any means and luckily do not have to work at a restaurant, but if i did and got turned down at moxies they would have a discrimination lawsuit on their hands.it isn’t right.i can understand hooters potocol but making every restaurant follow a sysytem of certain boobs, bodies, and a side order of slutty outfit need not apply to all.

  18. B says:

    reply to louisa:

I believe Sally was just trying to start up conversation.
I actually dont coupon much anymore but still look at the site because of posts like this. Its nice to hear everyone’s opinions on everything.
    🙂 🙂 🙂

  19. missbobloblaw says:

It all comes down to the old addage of “T*ts for TIPS”. Sex sells, and if its standard wear in the bar area then its quite obvious who Moxie’s is geared towards when it comes to a target audience. I guess if you are desperate enough for a job, or enjoy displaying your body for Loonies and Toonies, than its just the place of employment for you!

  20. Ann says:

I will start by clarifying that I have only been to Moxie’s twice in the last 5 years — both times in Guelph, and once shortly after they opened.

While the decor and mood lighting and all that jazz certainly established a certain ambiance, our server, while attractive, was a complete dolt! (Having served at a number of restaurants, I know what qualifies as “good” service, but I am also willing to give people the benefit of the doubt because we all have bad shifts… Also, I can generally tell when mistakes are the server’s fault or when the kitchen just screwed up.) But no, this girl’s mistakes were not because she was having a bad night. She was just dumb.

My second experience a couple years later was pretty much the same. She was pretty to look at, but not a lot going on upstairs, and she was a terrible server!

Maybe the third time’s the charm… nah. Why bother? While I don’t really care much if a restaurant preferentially hires females (and yes I realize how discriminatory this is! Especially since it makes it so difficult for my boyfriend to find bartending jobs!), but please hire the ones that are GOOD at what they do. I’d rather have a great server who’s homely looking than a Super Model who spills drinks, screws up orders, mixes up bills and is generally a vacuous idiot!

  21. . says:

jeo – the difference is that families such as yours have better things to spend their money on. It’s not unusual to see the same guys in a restaurant 2-3 times per week, wracking up 100 dollar bills each time. So… they’re appealing to the demographic that gives them the most business. if the business model didn’t work, there obviously wouldn’t be so many establishments that follow these practices 😉

places like moxies, and joey’s, and cactus club… well, they’re not really ideal family restaurants. You KNOW the girls are going to be dressed like that, so why go? try somewhere like red robins instead – similar food, different staff. my boyfriend and i specifically pick places like moxies and joeys because they AREN’T geared towards children, and we’d rather not hear little kids while we’re trying to have a quiet dinner. i’m sure your kids are very well behaved, but years of customer service for both my boyfriend and i mean that we know how obnoxious some children can be.

A tip – if alcohol is served at the restaurant, you can basically guarantee that your server is above the legal drinking age. If she’s not, and someone ordered a drink at her table, she’d need to transfer the table to someone else. It’s really not worth it.

  22. teagys says:

to me this not only reflects badly on the company, but also on the girls themselves. If they don’t have the self respect to stand up for themselves and wear what they think is appropriate for a work environment than i feel sorry for them. Why would anyone who works on their feet all day long want to wear high heels everyday? Regardless if they will wear anything their boss tells them to, just for money they might as well work at a strip club and make more. All i can say to those women is get some respect, in another 20 years when they are worn out and their looks have faded what will they have?

  23. . says:

teagys – two university degrees and no debt, in my case 🙂

  24. . says:

and think about what you’re saying for a minute – there’s uniforms everywhere. and speaking from first hand experience… wearing ‘sensible shoes’ while working at a coffee shop vs wearing heels while serving? you’re MUCH more sore at the end of the coffee shop shift.

  25. . says:

but… y’know. good job judging a book by its cover.

  26. evil.kitten says:

I must be very naive or something but I never in my dreams would have believed the 110 `rule`existed.. that`s so lame of people. Ya I would never classify myself as beautiful or `attractive` to any degree but beauty and sex appeal are different to everyone. Some person may hold a woman with long legs higher than a whaffer thin person. I`m honestly regardless of how I look to others [frankly I`m at the point where so much b.s. has happened that I don`t give a damn if joe blow I never met passes me on the street and insults my size or my hair or the face that i dont wear makeup; mainly because it`s jsut annoying and a pain to put on and keep on] attracted to humour and kindness. A persons looks are so far down the list it`s not funny. If you`re mean to someone for no good reason I`m gonna let you have it. Simple as that.

If moxie`s is a decent food franchise why don`t have uniforms for these women at all their locations not just certain ones offering pants.

Personally I`d rather have a waitress who`s bits and pieces are generously covered.. and no I don`t mean long sleeves and long shirts. A skirt to the knees so her butt doesn`t show when she bends over and a shirt covering her breasts and middrift. These should really be applied if the establishment has families with kids in mind.

  27. Trixyluxx says:

I use to work at Moxies,in order to get job there, you have to be recruited through a modelling agency 90% of the time, I quit that place in 2 weeks, to trashy, and they all sleep with eachother. Worst place ever, its like a diner brothel

  28. olivercat says:

I understand why there is alot of chatter about the hiring policy–but honestly it is not new—20 years ago I was told I “was not sexy enough” to be a jewellery clerk in a department store–but I did get the same dept. head job in another section…. so I guess nothing has really changed in all that time…..

  29. whatever says:

they should be called hoochies canada….LOL I like this post. I don’t believe in objectification of women. If I did, then it would have to be equally applied to men…the male staff at moxies are not hot…and borderline puny :S
you can show less skin and still look attractive.
but in general that’s my rant.

  30. rachel says:

I work at a bank like setting business and we have about the same practice. The owner of the company want us to be dress business casual but we are also not to be hiring over weight girls or ugly girls. we are to hire girls that are nice to look at so that the customers will want to come back to our company for our services

  31. bhlombardy says:

    Man, I wish there was a Moxie’s near me…

  32. sam says:

In Retail and any service industry LOOKS DO COUNT whether you like it or not. It is a fact of life and most people would rather be served by an attractive man or woman rather than an overweight unkept sloppy person anyday. Myself included. As for the kids seeing an underdressed woman, well it is the parents responsibility to raise your kids to understand all people dress diffrerently, and NUDITY is not a bad thing. There are many parents who let their kids watch and play violent games and movies and think nothind of it, but a little skin??? Come on!!! And if you are a lady offended by it maybe you are jealous and your husband loves to gawk, whether she is 18 or not, some men do not care.

  33. Bytown says:

Sounds like the diet coke club is out in full force on this comment board.

  34. ladie fannie says:

lol….yes, sex sells…but sex selling a sandwich….ewwwwww…I hope none of the sex falls out of the short skirt into the sandwich. :-s There was a moxies in Fairview Mall years ago..and it was a nice family type place. The one here in Barrie, though….ugh….I went there once when it opened…and was continuously BOMBARDED by the servers, bordering on harassment, with shots and various other cocktails. I thought No mean NO. :-s lol

  35. Dayanara says:

I hate Moxies, not because of the attire, but because of their lack of customer service and the food is not worth the price.

I have been to the Bramalea City Centre location on many occasions (friends of mine like the food) and each time I go there is poor service and yes, I have noticed the shorter than needed attire many times. It does not bother me except in the fact that it does seem like they hire on looks and not service/skill.

And sadly the 110 code applies to not just restaurants. I used to be the assistsnt manager at a PJ’s Pet Centres for a while and the manager told me about that code for when I accepted resumes….really???? I NEVER used it, I found it appalling.

  36. Melanie says:

I don’t think it’s just Moxie’s that uses the 110 code. I was a manager at a DQ for six years and I always had my staff use this if they were accepting resumes when I wasn’t in the store. It wasn’t necessarily to do with looks though. Sure if the person looked like a bum, they would definitely get a no, but it was also used if they seemed unintelligent, too young (we get a lot of thirteen and fourteen year olds applying even though we can’t legally hire anyone under fifteen), had their mom drop off a resume for them, showed up with their friends snapping bubblegum in your face, etc.

As for the Moxie’s ‘uniform’ I think they have the right to decide what their staff wears, but I wonder at where you draw the line? To me this screams sexual harassment, but it is up to the girls to complain.

If you don’t think it’s an appropriate environment for your children, why are you bringing them there in the first place? There are thousands upon thousands of restaurants out there, most of which boast fully clothed waitresses who know what they’re doing. Maybe if families started bycotting the restaurant when they saw this kind of behaviour, or made a complaint to the Manager/owner/etc. they would see a change.

  37. actucker says:

I don’t understand where thse complaints are coming from. Every different location has a different audience and most people are smart enough to realize whether or not that location is geared towards them or not.
Moxie’s offers a little bit of both with a family restaurant side and a bar side. Workers on the bar side will be dressed more provocatively then workers on the restaurant side – just as employees at any other bar will be dressed differently then the local family restuarant. With this in mind, why are people complaining on the attire of the workers there when there is an obvious difference between the association of ‘bar’ side and ‘restaurant’ side. I’m not going to go to a bar and start complaining about the attire.

With that in mind, Moxie’s just as any other place has a common look and feel and a loose uniform of what is expected just like any other place. When I worked in retail it was expected to look good and up to fashion. people do not want someone to help them dress themselves if you don’t even look like you can dress yourself. It isn’t stupidity, it’s having the knowledge to apply yourself to people in the most effective way to receive your ‘reward’ – in this case your pay.

Back to the bit about Moxie’s having a little bit of everything… I love that place because they have a great menu at a reasonable price. My girlfriends and I go there for great drinks and great appetizers. We would not do that at Boston Pizza because the atmosphere does not fit our intention. But we would go to Boston Pizza for hockey games and beer. Every different place meets a different need for people. That is why people go to different restaurants. Moxie’s is a great restaurant because it meets my needs. For resturants that don’t meet my needs and tastes, I realize that they are there for other people and respect their existence to entertain and provide for that demographic.

  38. Kelly says:

I do mystery shops for Moxie’s and the girls must be in heels and short black dresses. HEELS ALL DAY LONG!!!!!

  39. Kelly says:

For those saying they only dress like that in the bar area. YOUR WRONG!

  40. mondaymel says:

WOW am surprised that a Moxie staff member has never tried to sue this restaurant for having the word “sexy” in their employment form…..

But those applying to place should already know that

Also very surprised they wear HEELS….that is a huge safety issue, especially if you work behind the bar

Guess Moxie’s falls into the category below:

    What is sexual harassment?

Under the Ontario Human Rights Code, sexual harassment is “engaging in a course of vexatious comment or conduct that is known or ought to be known to be unwelcome.” In some cases, one incident can be serious enough to be sexual harassment. Sexual harassment can include:

asking for sex in exchange for something, like offering to improve a test score, offering a raise or promotion at work, or withholding something like needed repairs to your apartment
asking for dates and not taking “no” for an answer
    demanding hugs
making unnecessary physical contact, including unwanted touching
using rude or insulting language or making comments that stereotype girls, women, boys or men
calling people unkind names that relate to their sex or gender
making comments about a person’s physical appearance (for example, whether or not they are attractive)
saying or doing something because you think a person does not fit sex-role stereotypes
posting or sharing pornography, sexual pictures, cartoons, graffiti or other sexual images (including online)
    making sexual jokes
    bragging about sexual ability
bullying based on sex or gender
spreading sexual rumours or gossip (including online).

Sexual harassment does not have to be sexual. It can also mean that someone is bothering you because they think that you don’t act, look or dress in the way that a man (or boy) or woman (or girl) should.

People may also harass you because you are LGBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender).

  41. joseff says:

the 110 code exists and is used….think about it…you are going for an executive job and you show up in short shorts and an even shorter shirt…it’s not proper attire to hand out resumes…or you’re a guy with pants hanging down to your knees and a grungy old holey tshirt..or you’re applying for a job that is not suitable for you just so unemployment keeps off your back…why, oh why, would a company not somehow mark a resume based on these things?
I do agree with the frustration of not being hired based on attractivenes but face it, I would never apply for a job like the ones mentioned above anyways, because I don’t want to show all my stuff!

  42. benji says:

Uh, at the Moxies where I live I had a male host and a male server.

re: The secret shopper who says they have to wear heels all day, actually, any one of those workers can file with the Labour board – heels can cause injury (and I don’t mean by tripping)…. like, long term knee and joint damage. They can file a grievance if they want.

  43. Andie says:

I think criticizing the girls is wrong. If you don’t like the way the staff dress, eat elsewhere. That’s your choice. To compare them to strippers is outrageous. These are most likely young women, who take care of themselves, who feel comfortable in those clothes, so, for them, it’s an honest job that pays the rent. if they aren’t those type of women, then, they probably wouldn’t be applying in the first place. Way back in university i was a waitress in a place that allowed for a range of dress styles. i always went with the shorts and camp shirt option because it felt right to me (and i had a real blonde ponytail girl-next-door thing, i worked that – you are working for tips after all), but the girls who wore the tank tops and short skirts weren’t bad people, that was just more their thing.

  44. Twinmommy says:

Whenever the opportunity arises my husband and I will always go to Moxie’s for supper (having kids this happens maybe four times a year). The food is always consistent even though the service may not be so. We always opt to eat in the dining area and not the lounge strictly because we prefer the seating and the fact that the servers are fully clothed. I have worked with our people who have told me about other restaurants that have similar hiring practices one of them being Turtle Jack’s. Turtle Jack’s hires men for the bar and women for the dining room and they are instructed to dress attractively. Time and place people! These are establishments that welcome children into them and then present their wait staff as if they are working in an establishment meant for adults.

  45. Minou says:

If a guy takes a woman for a date at Moxie’s, isn’t she going to feel that she’s “competing” with the waitresses and feel really uncomfortable?

  46. monica says:

OMG i was at Jack Astor’s over the weekend and realized how waitresses are dressing this days (last time i was at J.A was over a year ago :(..) it is sad how skinny the girls look. The dresses are way too short, some were wearing backless dresses (AT A FAMILY RESTAURANT!!! ) i told my husband about how come i could not find one single girl that looked healthy or full figure… but as one person said it is up to the girls to say something about it…. oh, and I do agree that some of the girls (that served me) were pretty to look at but nothing up there (i tested the girl that served me on saturday) i asked if she could tell me how much was 10% of my bill….she went to get a calculator….SAD!!

  47. sam says:

BACKLESS?!!!! OMG! What will happen next??? lmfao!!!!!

  48. sam says:

At least her dress wasn’t Frontless!!!! lol

  49. clare says:

I agree totally with Andie. If those girls want to dress like that then that is their choice. If you don’t like it don’t eat there and that is your choice. There are so many bars, pubs, clubs, etc. that hire based on physical appearances but that is often how the industry works.

  50. marie says:

I’ve yet to go to Moxie’s but my brother seems to love it (I wonder why:P)

I think the women should know better, if all women stood up for themselves and stood together, then nobody would need to dress trashy to get a job and men would respect us instead of objectifying us.

  51. TJ says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if lot of flight attendants , receptionist , scretaries @ various offices etc are hired on the same basis ..like the 101 code 🙂

I would rather have good service from a so called ugly person than bad service from a so called attractive person .

  52. Michelle I. says:

A few years ago I actually knew a girl who was hired in Vancouver to specifically be a hostess. At the time, she was a gorgeous, 23 year old slim, tanned, blue-eyed, blond streaked girl. She was told to wear all black, have her shoulders bared, hair down straight, short shirt & wear high heeled boots.Flash forward a few months & her attitude changed ENTIRELY.I guess she felt pressured quite a bit to keep looking better & better. She spent her father’s inheritance on new boobs. Her attitude turned quite mean & catty, it was ALL about the looks & raking in tips & I just couldn’t take her complete turn-around from the nice, fun to be with friend any more. After the boobs were done, she was going next for liposuction on her non-fat existance thighs & was shopping around for a surgeon. A 23 year old! I couldn’t handle the fake-ness any more so had to drop her as a friend. The restaurant job had so much to do with it & I heard her stories daily about how her (male) manager “encouraged” her to do all this for great tips.It was really sad to see the change. We even went there for dinner one night on her day off & she told me what she wanted me to wear there, even though we were just EATING there.I wasn’t working – just eating. But she wanted me to wear “club gear” to be seen with her.The dining experience of eating there WITH a hostess, surrounded & waited on by the people with the “beautiful mentality” made for a crappy dinner out.I guess I’ve just had a really bad Moxie’s experience all around …………… & I found their food not that great. Drinks – good. Food, ok. 🙁

  53. Dani says:

Some places get around hiring practices by classifying what would be “waitresses” as “models who also serve food and beverages”. That way, they can be as discriminatory as they want. Not sure if Moxies follows this strategy or not, but I wouldn’t put it past them. It’s not the kind of place I’d want to go.

  54. Ray says:

Love the food and the women at Moxie’s. That’s all I have to say, lol.

  55. Bob says:

IMO Women Can only blame themselves for place like Moxies. The girls who work their chose to dress like that and the women who go as customers have this magical power called “choice”. If there was a resterant with a bunch of scantily clothed dudes I would refuse to go eat there. Short of gay dudes a resterant like that would get next to no male clientelle.

I guess when you think about it, it shows that MOST women are classier then men and wouldn’t go to a place that featured scantily clad dudes. I however am a man, therefore I can barely even spell class, making moxies the place for me.

  56. 2jk19 says:

Have you ever been into a Hollister or Abercrombie & Fitch clothing store? I used to work for both sister companies back when I was completing my undergraduate degree in university.

All of the people working on the sales floor are also “model like” material. Managers would go around the mall, at clubs and bars to “recruite” people to work there.

A manager whom I got to know well entrusted me with the task of picking people out of the crowds at the store for an interview. The guidelines she gave me were disgusting! She came up to me once and asked me what I thought of a woman shopping in the store and I said she was pretty and she said “yeah, but what about her nose? Forget it, it is too big!”

Employees would also be photographed once a month and pictures would be sent off to head office for “review” and potential modelling as the store is where they got their models from.

I got so sick of working there (I had no idea that was what it was all about!) – sooo superficial I quit as soon as I had lined up another job.

Unfortunately a lot of stores/restaurants are getting into the sex appeal of things versus good customer service and compentency.

For as long as I can remember a pizza company (Pizzaville I think?!) says their phone number on the radio ad and says “3636 – not free sex, free sex” – a pizza company??! come on!

  57. Kat says:

Seems to be the same thing at Milestones. My DH and I went there for their date night special and joked about all the Robert Palmer girls walking around. Lots of pretty girls in tight dresses walking around the restaurant. I kept expecting the girls to burst into a restaurant-wide dance number. Corporate should consider that idea.

  58. itsjustmebub says:

I love Moxies … but yes, every time I’m there I just shake my head at the “skirts” the waitresses are wearing… if my “skirts” you mean a small piece of fabric mostly covering their panties.
    yep … good times

  59. trichi says:

If you don’t like the way they dress at certain restaurants then dont go…you wouldn’t bring your family to Hooters now would you? When you eat at these restaurants you are only enabling them by giving them your money. I have eaten at Moxies and don’t return because the food is terrible and the service is even worse. As for heels, I ate a Joey Tomatoes and while we were there 2 women working slipped and fell with full plates of food! Now how attractive was that? 2 pretty women dressed nice on the floor covered in food! This is the reason for non slip shoes! There are many chain restaurants that require you to wear a uniform and specific shoes for serving (The Keg, Montana’s, Kelseys, Red Lobster, Olive Garden etc).

  60. Angela says:

A friend of mine who, was once into the pageant scene, told me that certain restaurant chains like Moxie’s get away with the way they screen and hire, and then have their female staff dress, because the women aren’t actually employed as “waitresses” or “servers”, but as “models who serve”. Somehow the term “model” allows the company to require the female staff to dress so scantily/shockingly. I think we were even sitting in a Moxie’s when this came up!

  61. amy says:

Maybe we should start calling it “Beavers”.

  62. Taylor says:

ew. sorry for your bad experience. Though the whole thing about perfect body: My view is that people who get breast augmentation is not really perfect. Obviously they do not accept or respect their natural body that they were born with. And for some reason I hear men around me constantly complaining about women with fake breasts (because up close and personal, apparently its not so sexy)

Back to topic, If I seen waitresses decked out in such apparel, I would most likely just chuckle to myself, and maybe talk to the manager about offering these waitresses clothes to wear.

  63. Taylor says:

  64. Kaguya says:

I’ve eaten there since I was in highschool and if you eat in the waiting area, people are decently dressed (I’m short, so if there’s any panties to be seen, pretty sure I can make it out.) I’ve never been to the bar – that’s probably another story.

  65. Natty says:

I had a classmate who worked at Moxie’s. They were required to wear heels of a certain height and to never put their hair up and wear make-up. But I thought this was common knowledge in restaurants like Moxie’s, Joey’s etc.

  66. Bree says:

If I was served by someone so scantily clad I wouldn’t tip her! I refuse to contribute to sexism. How about for once appealing to women’s sexuality? People seem to think that (excluding sex workers) women have no sexuality! The only places to see scantily clad men around here is in the gay village. So there we go, just proves how society sells sex to men, be it straight or gay.

  67. Talor says:

The attire is worn to get more money obviously. They are selling themselves one step short of stripping. As for “perfect body” There is no such thing as everyone has a different idea of what that is. And fake breasts may look good in clothes, up close and personal, they are not so nice. So many people have told me this.

  68. Al K says:

I’m in different on the attire, as Moxie’s is just a victim to current culture and social norms. If you are curious as to what I’m talking about, just take a look at the shows the people watch on TV nowadays, garbage like The Bachelor, Jersey Shore, Housewives… If you don’t want me to classify you in to the “hypocrite” bucket, go change our collective attitudes towards media that we have a “choice” over and then tell me how this is inappropriate. At least these people working here are adults making a choice to up their employability. I am more aghast by parents who allow their daughters to dress themselves in “adult” styled clothing. You are the adult, you have a responsibility to ensure your children are appropriately clothed.

On the 110 rating, I won’t be shy to say when I am paying for anything, I want the best value I can get for my money. So if there are two places I can go, where quality and selection of food is equal at the same price…I’m going to the place with better looking people. Why do I want to be served by an ugly person when I have a choice?

  69. Me & my 2 cents says:

    Cactus Club!

  70. Louise says:

I don’t know why there is a prevailing restaurant mentality that breasts sells foods. It may be to a small segment of the population, but don’t they realize that over 50% of customers are women and they’re the ones who usually decide where to go to eat?

  71. Linda says:

My son has worked at Moxie’s for over a year now and yes he is very handsome and I’m sure that helped him get the job too, it also helps him make sales and get big tips. Just the way society is! The people are very nice employers and staff, they are treated well and are never forced to do something they are not comfortable with. Its not a bad place and cant be knocked for how they hire. You dont see over weight ugly strippers in clubs right nor do you find pictures of ugly models. eh thats the world and how we made it. Companys are catering and profiting off of what we want and ask for.

  72. Boo Radley says:

I personally think it’s okay for a restaurant to have a specific image and target specific audience. Some restaurants like Swiss Chalet are family oriented, others are sports oriented, etc.

Some people hire people with a specific bachelor degree e.g. Civil Engineer with 5 years industry experience. Does that mean they are discriminating against people who don’t have that degree and experience?

Gyms hire people with a certain fitness level.

Some companies state that a job is reserved to someone with a disability. Are they discriminating against people without a disability?

Goodlife fitness has women only gyms. If you’re a guy you’re not allowed into the gym. Isn’t that obvious blatant sexual discrimination?

Where do we draw the line?

Why is it bad that moxies is trying to have a speicifc image and style? Wouldn’t it be boring if all restaurants looked and felt the same?

  73. Bytown says:

On January 24, 2011 Constable Michael Sanguinetti spoke on crime prevention at a York University safety forum. He said: “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.”
And thus the Slutwalk movement began.

I see a lot of people here share the constables opinion regarding how the girls dress at Moxies.

  74. k says:

Was it just those few locations? The ones I went to, the girls wore pants and some were not as skinny as you described them to be. There was a few who were more well rounded though not considered as “fat”, but they were not to the point of skin and bones.

  75. Sally says:

I didn’t say it was bad Boo Radley. I am perplexed at why the men don’t have to be sexy to then.

  76. Jodi says:

I definitely agree!! The Moxie’s here are very looks conscious, wearing the skimpiest outfit possible, restaurant and the bar!! Looks make no difference to me in a server. I would much rather get a person that does their job well,is polite and friendly. Looks don’t make my experience any better!!!!

  77. Sharon says:

I’m new here so just wondering what does this story have to do with coupons and deals? Is there a review section that this can be placed under?

  78. sacha says:

the top of the dress doesn’t bother me. it is the bottom of the dress. Heaven forbid something falls on the floor and you end up with a face full of waitress butt while eating. At least bring the dress to mid thigh, no need for a dress to just barely cover the butt unless they can wear some sort of dance short under them.

  79. Sally says:

Sharon, since the blog started back in 2006 we post the odd off topic.

  80. Cheryl888 says:

Before married, my husband used to frequent moxies a lot. He did only because of the waitresses, and the reputation they had where I live. It is very obvious with how they are dressed, why they are hired. However, being there with him, we have never tipped more, mostly because lets face it, its MOXIES! lol
The food is gross for the most part, and they have upped the price on everything waaaaaay too much. I remember when the drinks were so cheap, it was easy to get bombed there on a Tuesday (I was 18 of course lol). I expect good service from a waitress, hot or not.

  81. Ashley says:

I had a friend who worked at Moxies and she wasn’t hired as a server, but rather as a model which meant they were allowed to tell them how to dress, etc., I’m sure the rules of attire vary from location to location but at the one she worked at her skirt couldn’t be longer than to where her fingertips touched her legs and she had to wear heels.

I’ve never had a bad experience there with the service and their clothing really doesn’t bother me. I mean, come on, I’ve seen more revealing clothing on teenagers at the mall unfortunately. If you don’t like it, don’t go there. It’s really that simple.

Each restaurant/food chain has a specific targeted demographic and it is their right to run their business as they choose, as long as they follow labor laws etc.,

  82. nic says:

It is sick…..a cousin from Holland was visting and he literally thought that a Moxie’s we walked by was a “red light location” due to the way the very young looking girls were dressed.

People – instead of venting here (and I TOTALLY agree with all of you who think that not only people who look like supermodels should have a crack at the $30-40 an hour waitressing jobs in these types of reataurants) – send a note to MOXIE’s!!

Not all the Moxie’s locations do this inappropriate practice to the same extent, so maybe they will tone it down if they hear from paying custmers that they don’t like it.

That is the best way to actually make a difference with your opinion.

  83. Funkymunky says:

Gotta love the “why is this posted here” comments, lol. Get on with it already, peeps!

on topic -> I haven’t been to one in a while but when I used to live closer to Yonge/Sheppard, we’d go there a lot. I don’t remember noticing any skanky looking waitresses BUT this was over 3 years ago, so maybe policies changed?

  84. Julie says:

I’ve been to both Moxies London locations. I found the South London location to be more “covered up” than the North London restaurant, but when I went to the South London location it was for lunch so maybe they dress differently for the lunch crowd than the happy hour/supper crowd?

  85. Amused says:

I suspect that the majority of women who take issue with Moxies probably have self-esteem issues. For some reason there are a lot of women out there who think, “Damn. That girl is better-looking than I am! She should cover up! I don’t like that people are looking at her and not me.”

We’re talking about beautiful women making money off their looks as if it’s a new thing. Models, dancers, strippers, porn stars, fitness instructors- etc. These people often work very hard (through diet and exercise) to maintain a certain ‘look’. They invest in their bodies the way others invest in education, looking to get into a certain line of work. Moxies just happens to be another ‘line of work’ for individuals that look a certain way.

If you want to be a waiter or waitress, there are literally thousands of other restaurants you could apply to and earn decent money. Enough with all the ‘discrimination’ stuff- it boils down to “I’m not pretty enough to get a job there, and I have sour grapes about that.”

Moxies has a business model that seems to work for them. Hot chicks, not so great food. That’s just fine. If you don’t want to see pretty ladies in skimpy outfits, why not just not go to that particular establishment? As I mentioned earlier, it’s not as if there aren’t thousands of other restaurants you could go to. Personally, I’m not all that crazy about looking at sweaty, naked women’s lady-parts…. so if I am in the mood to go out for a beer, I don’t go to a strip club. It’s really not that difficult.

  86. Stephanie says:

It’s as simple as this; just don’t eat at Moxies if you don’t like the way the girls dress. I’m glad I read this article, because now I will NEVER go to Moxies.

If enough people refused to eat there because of their server’s dress policy, it would cause change. 🙂

  87. Mike says:

I haven’t ever noticed it being that revealing or at best it varies between staff and locations. I think there are some girls who also choose a bit more revealing clothes in hopes of better tips vs other female servers. I will say that the restaurant wants an image – there is nothing wrong with that. I fail to see your argument – you won’t eat somewhere if they don’t have ugly people working? I remember this being an issue at Abercrombie where more attractive people work (although…I would argue sometimes they aren’t that attractive there but anyway…). I think it makes more sense in a clothing store enviornment – you’d obviously want people who look good in their clothes being salespeople. Not really sure the reasoning in a restaurant setting. But either way – I could care less how they dress at Moxie’s – if you step out on the street corner in front most girls don’t seem to dress much different.

  88. Arya says:

I work at Moxies (and just gave my 2 weeks, thank god) and there is so much ridiculously illegal bs going on there, it’s ridiculous. 2 girls just went to the labour board because they were discriminated against for getting pregnant and no longer meeting “uniform standards”. The uniform in the lounge is completely different from the dining room. Girls in the lounge are required to wear at least a 2 inch heel and now the management is cracking down on the width of the heels. Now they prefer them to be the slender, almost stiletto type of heel because the thicker, more comfortable heel isn’t as ‘classy’. A lounge server told me a couple days ago that she was taking advil during her shift because her feet hurt so much. Dining room servers are supposed to be wearing heels too but their rules aren’t as strict about the type. Uniform in the Dining room is now in the process of switching back from a black blouse and pencil skirt to a black blouse and pants. The hostesses get to choose their attire but are also required to wear heels while they seat guests and bus tables. At the location I just quit if you get pregnant you will be given less and less shifts as they try to ‘force you out’. They can’t fire you for being pregnant but they can force you to need a new job. My manager has definitely slept with at least one employee and will give the best shifts to the 19 year old girls with the biggest tits. This place is a joke to work at, and I hope it gets what’s coming to it.

  89. Arya says:

‘It’s so ridiculously illegal it’s ridiculous?’ Wow. Sorry everyone, I got caught up in the rant and forgot to proof read. 🙂

  90. Sally says:

I didn’t even think of the pregnancy aspect of it. Very interesting.

  91. Tess says:

If people didn’t tip the waitresses that looked like that better than the waitresses that didn’t, they wouldn’t dress that way. It’s pretty black and white.

I have worked in a bar before. It was a Coyote Ugly type bar. It was a lot of fun – our owner was awesome and passed on to us one firm belief – we had the power. People came to see us, our shows and drink our drinks. If we were being disrespected by patrons, those patrons were removed. Not all of our girls were supermodels, but that did not stop them from getting amazing tips when dressed in cut offs and a tied up Stampede shirt. The trainees dressed in black shirts and pants didn’t get tipped as well as the girls dancing on the bar/working the crowds.

When I worked in high end baby retail, we used the 110 and 435 codes as well. If we didn’t see experience or they had a negative attitude when applying? 110. Positive attitude and experience? 435 (logic being that the 4 looks like a Y).

While it does suck that this exists in the world, the change is simple – stop going. Make it count financially. The manager isn’t going to care much if one person calls to say they’ve stopped going because the waitresses are just too perfect/not all that dressed. It needs concentrated group effort. Ask yourself if you’re going to make that change or just post about it on the internet.

  92. Frank says:

Can’t wait to go to a 110 free zone!!!

  93. Kari says:

I, too, was really surprised with the way Moxie’s uniforms have changed. And for those that said to just stay out of the bar, I was there once sitting on the restaurant side, and happened to be along where the girls walked to the kitchen. Since those seats are on a bit if a platform, I literally had a parade of exposed breasts marching past me through my entire meal. It was a littlr ridiculous!

  94. Arya says:

As a side not, to post #16 by izawa; You have clearly never served before. There is definitely a lot of learned skill involved which is why most restaurants won’t hire someone with no past experience serving. If you took a second to think about it, there is a ton of skill involved in balancing 4 hot plates at time, memorizing the orders of 5 tables or more full of people, and catering to jerks with a smile on your face. Serving may pay minimum wage but bottom line is with tips in, most servers are making at least $20/hour. People don’t do it because they’re “unskilled”, they do it because they’re smart and know it’s a great job to have while they’re putting themselves through college or supporting a family. Please don’t be so quick to judge a person by their job title.

  95. helpit says:

I recently went to Moxies, and a problem with our dining experience, and the manager handled everything quickly and seamlessly, we had such a great dining experience that I wrote to their Head office, complimenting everyone involved with our dining experience by name. I don’t recall what anyone was wearing, and I don’t care. We went out for a fun dining experience, if I went to see a Madonna concert, even though she is technically at “work” I don’t want to see her in office/business casual wear. I’ve been to Hooter’s before and it was just fun and funny to see the girls, we were there with a 12 year old boy who ate his chicken wings and exclaimed, “I don’t know why we came here, these wings aren’t very good!.” While babes served all around him. Lighten up, seriously, we have much bigger problems that keep me up at night, like how to potty train a 2.5 year old who simply refuses to use the potty, no matter how much I beg! It’s fine! This too shall pass…

  96. jason says:

You people dont seem to have a problem with majority of ads only showing thin women most with implants, billboards, tv commercials , danica patrick(godaddy) , and so on but now it is. And to the point about dennys nail on the head. We are making a deal about nothing . I went to a rstaurant like that when i was a kid and i had the time of my life lol. I wouldnt go now but i am not against at all this type of practice. Way to throw the bone out there again to get people going.

  97. JL says:

i work at a casino as a waitress and have definitely noticed that patrons (80% of whom are typically men) would rather wait to order a drink from a scantily dressed or “hot” waitress than some of the older or heavier girls (who are also treated poorly by management in that they don’t get the prime shifts or sections). While that may seem sad, everyone has a choice in where they dine, drink, socialize, or work. The fact that I make $600 in an 8-hour shift motivates me to look good and to maintain my appearance so that’s the choice I make. Is there something wrong with that? I think not. I used to be heavier in my teens and when I made a decision to get healthy I noticed that the way people (men AND women) treated me completely changed…all of a sudden everyone becomes so helpful and interested. It’s unfortunate, but people have to abandon this idyllic notion of a non-discriminatory society, because it’s just not realistic.

  98. Sandie says:

If you don’t like Moxie’s then don’t waste your time going to Sammy J Peppers. The waitresses there wear REALLY SHORT skirts or boy shorts that you could mistake for underwear…. I’m sorry maybe I missed the mass memo but since when did being a waitress equal pimping yourself out for FOOD. The last thing I want to look at while I am trying to have a nice evening out and enjoying some good food is having to be surrounded with T&A everywhere. If that was what I was looking for then I would have gone to the nearest stripjoint.
Your job title is “server” so I fail to see how sexy revealing clothes falls into that category. My opinion is also the same if men were to start serving you wearing no shirt.

  99. fc says:

    This is disgusting
i dont know why ANYONE would Ever go there
    Especially with Kids
Of course I can see why Perverted men would go there but Why would anyone with a brain/soul go in there? or any other place like that for that matter..

  100. tudorchick says:

i must add i am not jealous of the girls at all.i am confident in my body and my husband loves it,i don’t go to the restaurant because of poor lackluster service and sub par food,my husband even said as i brought this up yesterday, that he would rather be served well by a plain looking person rather than have someones’ a$$ in his face for a tip with bad service…

  101. Jake says:

I love this site especially with these interest topics, so I’m going to throw my two cents in.

Let me ask all those people that have a problem with restaurants that uses the 110 rule .

If I came in to your office and handed in my resume dressed with ripped jeans, a t-shirt that had obscene words on it and my hair is all messed up, what would you do? Would you say:
    1) Yeah, that guy looks like a good person to hire, lets interview him!!
    2) That guy LOOKS unprofessional, I’ll just put his resume in the NO pile.

If you chose 1…I got to wonder about your office 
If you chose 2, isn’t that discriminating on how someone looks?

Okay so let me ask another question for those people that have a problem with what the waitress wear.

Have you ever thought that these waitress chose to be in this job and that for dressing this way, they will earn way more then they would have if they were dressed in “non sexy”? Or have you though about how much effort it takes to look the way they do by exercising, eating right etc?

I think JL put it best…she knows that she can earn $600 in an 8 hour shift by dressing this way and for putting effort into making herself healthy. Why not? I don’t know many jobs that can earn $600 in 8 hours….do you? Perhaps these women have families to feed…ever thought of that?

So I say, if you are willing to work at being “beautiful”(and be healthy at the same time) why not show it off…you worked hard for it. Just like if I worked hard in my career to buy beautify things (cars, art etc…) I’m going to show it off…

  102. Sally says:

But how come the guys don’t have to look good there? I just want an even playing table.

  103. giffy85 says:

It is absolutely ludicrous that a large majority of the comments here are using chubby/healthy/overweight as synonymous for ugly and accusing anyone who doesn’t want a side of beave and cleave with their meal as self conscious. I do not live under a rock and know that sex sells however just because it does certainly does not make it right. As for the restaurant itself, they dress up the girls in such revealing and unrealistic clothes that they cannot walk up two steps without pulling down their skirt to make sure nothing pops out. The food is overpriced and the service, at the Windsor location, is awful. I personally will not go there again even if my meal is free as it was, from mystery shopping. What I dont understand is why they attempt to class up the decor with mood lighting and fancy designs but they have trashy young adults running around. Thats my two cents….

  104. Lisa says:

Seriously, what’s wrong with pretty girls serving food? Would you say the same if it were a bunch of sexy guys? Why do you have to worry about what others wear? They are just clothes people, oh, and a body underneath!

  105. d. says:

If you have a family, and you are SO uncomfortable eating at an establishment like this, leave. Don’t go there. When I go to Moxies, I know that my server isn’t going to have a ton of clothes on, but we like the food, and the ambience.
Also, although I may not agree with the 110 rule, it makes sense. They are selling a brand, and they want people to help with the bottom line, not hinder it.

  106. save-a-lot says:

The Safeway I used to work at marked resumes with “110” as well

  107. Stephania says:

Not sure if this helps, but the food is overpriced and GROSS!

  108. dandelion says:

I don’t eat at moxies anymore( they don’t have anything on the menu that appeals to my vegetarian diet)however as a mother of 2 young girls, waitresses flouncing about isn’t exactly the message I would want to send out that is ok. As said just don’teat there but it doesn’t change the message that is being sent to the young girls that do eat there. I do not have a self esteem issue so I for one don’t feel inferior to girls with big boobs and nice butts I just don’t like the message being sent to young girls that you have to show it look good or get a job. There are many ways of looking sexy and covering yourself up a bit.

As for employers who are looking for employees with degrees and experience, they are simply looking for people who are competent and have proved it through work experience. Having Big boobs does not necessarily make me competent nor able to to take an order coreectly. That takes intelligence and last i looked i didn’t keep that in my boobs.

  109. gill says:

I’m laughing at all the people who are living in an imaginary idealistic world.

  110. TwitchyTomboy says:

My husband and I (we’re still 35) loves Moxies for the girls. We tend to go back to the ones that have more attractive girls and yes they’re usually in the bar section. Why can’t they have the attractive ones in the main dining area too? We see no problem with their dress code and looks. I agree with some who say they don’t want ugly people serving them… especially if I’m dining in a nice atmosphere restaurant. We say the better looking the better!

  111. boom says:

I worked for Moxie and their hiring policy is what the author posted. The dining side wears pants, the hostesses are always in either black skirt + shirt or a black tight fitting dress. The lounge is like a step above a strip club. Short skirt and tight black tank top. You COULD NOT start your shift unless : your hair was down and styled, nails were done ( no overly flashy color) a nice watch and a necklace.
The men who come to the lounge treat the girls like trash and unless you flirt with these middle aged losers you can kiss your tip. The other bad thing about Moxie’s is the way they cut servers. They put you in a section and give you a number. The higher the number is means that you’ll get cut first. And the higher the number the worse the section and least tables for the server. You can be there for an hour and only have two table and walk away with less than 15 dollars. Everyone in that place had a second job because for 80% of us there wasn’t any money to be made.
OHHHH and the greatest part? Whenever you want to ask your co-workers ANYTHING you have the begin the sentence with (insert name) may I?
Unless you’re a manager no one over 30 is working there.
The younger people that work there like the idea of Moxie’s and feel that they have been selected to work there BECAUSE of their looks which makes the feel more attractive.

AMEN JL and Jake! I worked as a waitress in resteraunts and bars, not for long but a few years. I also managed a private golf course club house. I was young and freakin cute. I made a boatload of money. I am not an airhead, I know what works. I was damn good at my job and fortunately was attractive as well. These girls aren’t in it for a long time (hopefully). Got it, use it. Don’t like it, don’t go.

  113. Sarah says:

The first time I went to Moxies was on a trip to Edmonton with my sister in law. There were some cute girls, some not so cute girls, whatever. I really liked the atmosphere and food, so when I came back to the gta, I went on a date there with my boyfriend. Oh my, was it a different experience.

I have no problem with hot girls serving food. But they should be hot in addition to being an awesome server. I don’t tip on a hotness scale, I tip based on a good experience. And on 2 separate occasions at this Moxies, the waitresses I had were horrible. One who made me a drink barely looked drinking aged, and the drink was the most awful drink I ever had at a restaurant/bar.

I understand different companies project different images, and these people are you’re front of the line people. But the first thing I thought when I walked into this place was, “everyone’s so gorgeous, but how can they waitress in heels like that? They must have an ambercrombie and american apparel type thing goin’ on.” It’s not okay. It happens, it’s life, but it’s not okay. Especially when lack of skirt length is proportional to actual waitressing and serving ability. Showing up unkept, and dirty with a typo laden resume is completely different than discriminating based on some very subjective standards what’s considered hot enough.

And all the times I went, I only saw girls on their girls night out, and couples. So I don’t know why they’re pandering to men. Even if they’re not, and they just want to project the image of sexy – get women who can actually do the job at hand adequately first, and are also good looking instead of the other way around. Uniforms are one thing, but actually mandating what’s sexy enough is crazy. Required heel height? Skirt length? A separate room stocked with heels, make up, tight shirts and hairspray? Keeping the pregnant waitress out of sight as much as possible, without actually breaking any laws? Because you know, pregnant is (unofficially) not part of the uniform. Come on, it happens, but it’s not okay and shouldn’t be brushed aside like it is.

And if you’re going to be blatantly discriminating, the least you can do is be equally so and hire some hot guys. Maybe I’ll tip based on cheekbone structure.

  114. joline says:

As someone who used to work in an environment that was based solely on how your breasts look in a tight shirt, I was SO glad when I quit. I still cannot wear heels from the years of working in them on concrete floors. I have since refused to eat in chain restaurants because I find this to be the most ridiculous practice. And truthfully, there are some AMAZING mom and pop businesses that have much better food and more personable wait staff. I don’t care how hot my server is, I want great food and drink, and excellent service – that is why I go out, not for the eye candy.

  115. Talor says:

Lisa, you are not getting the point. I would love to see a chip and dale inspired serving team but its nowhere to be found. we live in a world that sexually exploits women (not that sexual exploitation of men doesn’t occur, just not on an equal rate). The problem is not solely their attire, but the fact that it is only women that are subjected to this at this particular establishment.

  116. Ian says:

lol breasts definately sell when ordering chicken 😀 The bigger the piece the better! But to brag about your double f’s is not attractive. Breasts are basically fat and most of us men draw the line past a certain point, no offence to such women but just wanted to debunk the myth that all men love gigantic boobs. lol.

  117. Ian says:

Taylor, The women are subjecting themselves, since they are not forced to work there… But I have to agree that there is no equal grounding on which gender businesses cater to.

  118. CMRobinson says:

You should check out South of Temperance in Toronto, same thing. We actually felt bad for the waitresses for a couple reasons. 1) They were constantly trying to pull their way too short skirts down as they continuously were riding up, and 2) the day we were there it was a little cool on the patio and the poor things looked like they were freezing in the getups they had on.

  119. Bruce Wayne says:

I’ve been there once with my wife celebrating someone’s birthday. I actually didn’t care much for the short dresses. In my opinion, this chain would do better to offer more gluten free options & sort out their pricing.
I can eat cheaper & better elsewhere. And for the view, I can walk down the Rideau Canal

  120. PEppY says:

Well personally I do not like Moxies much. I have been there twice in Brampton and the both of the times I noticed wine and other liquor being served in DIRTY GLASSES ….. the waitress changed it and still it was and I showed the dirty glasses to her as well.

  121. jason says:

its not these waitress’s fault they are thin . Maby its your fault for eating too much and no excercise. Skinny is the new fat people lol. Dont like it dont go simple as that its their restuarant to choose how they run it legally and they are doing nothing wrong. Just say it i am fat and i cant help it

  122. ladybug889 says:

Imagine, if I’d been more attractive I might have been lucky enough to be hired at Moxie’s or Jack Astor’s and make this “amazing living” on tips. Unfortunately, I’m ugly and work for the government. Poor me!

  123. sAM says:

Moxies hires their waitresses through a modelling agency, so they can ensure their girls are pretty. No need to hate the girls or Moxies just because you’re not as pretty or thin as they are. Women are such jealous creatures.

  124. tudorchick says:

jason you are an idiot…not all of the people disgusted by this practice are fat…or ugly

  125. sam says:

Sex sells people!!!! I would not be offended by the girls at all. Who cares really?? The envious only. They should enjoy it while they still have it and make as much money as possible I say. The looks won’t last. And the whiners on here are the ones who “Discriminate”!!!!

  126. giffy85 says:

reading the comments on here really perpetuates how simple minded, uneducated and just plain ignorant the majority of western civilization really is. being offended or opposed to an injustice does not make you jealous, envious, unattractive or any other derogatory term you can dream up. why must having an opposing opinion, view or belief grant you the right to harass, insult or abuse others.

  127. The Tim says:

Moxies is fantastic. I am a 29 year old chauvinistic pig.

*And the rest of his comment was removed due to swearing and utter rudeness towards women*

  128. Loralee says:

I know from working in the service industry for a long time, these restaurants, Moxies, cactus club and others like them, aim for the middle aged business man. It is actually a large part of their clientelle. These men are the ones with the $$, business lunches, dinners out with women, or just a guys night out. At least in BC, I know that locations that have lounges the girls do where the skirts/dresses, and high heels. The rest of the servers in the restuarant side where dress pants, dress shirts and dress shoes. If you think that if you walk into a bar (like a lounge, even in a restaurant) the girls are not going to be wearing any more clothes than these girls do at Moxies.
But the truth is, if it bothers you that much…don’t eat there. Personally I don’t care what my server looks like as long as they do their job to my satisfaction. You will have good servers and bad in all restuarants no matter how attractive.
I just wish that the managers would get rid of those who are not good at their jobs so they can move on to the next in line and try them out. Unfortunately, people never give their opinions to the management about the poor service they receive, they just leave a bad tip and leave upset. If management received enough complaints about the same girl…they may be able to do something about it.

  129. Dot Swiller says:

Great write-up, I’m regular visitor of one’s site, maintain up the excellent operate, and Its going to be a regular visitor for a lengthy time.

  130. anastasia says:

I just started working at moxies recently myself and it was very interesting to read this threat!
whats sad is mostly what everyone said is true. I myself and a couple other girls got hired without even looking at our resumes, just for the “pretty faces” (as i found out later).
I must agree the lounge uniform is a bit sluty buuuuuut they provide only the tank tops, the skirts girls pick themselves so if its too short – blame the girl! Also 2 inch heels are a must at moxies:/
BUT the dinning room outfits are totally family oriented! Black classy blouse with some ders spants. and we get sooo many people with kids!
Also wanted to mention that we have at least 5 waitresses which don’t have… to put it nicely “the best figures” and never wear make up, don’t calm their hair…..but they are still around cz they are good servers. So i guess its not only about the looks?

  131. Retiredmoxiesserver says:

I worked at a Moxies in Vancouver for a year.  Maybe I just lucked out on my location and managers but I didn’t really find that many of the things that people are posting about happened at my location.  I split my shifts between the lounge and dining room and have helped out as a hostess before.

Dining room servers wore black dress pants and a 3/4 length black button up dress shirt (shirt was provided).

Lounge servers wore a black skirt (handbook said skirts should ideally be 3 fingers above the knee, this was a guide line and if you wanted to wear a little longer or shorter it was never a problem), they paired it with a black thick strapped tank top (top did have a bit of cleavage but it had a full back and like I said, thick almost 3inch straps) (shirt also provided).

Hostesses wore pretty much whatever they wanted as long as it was black.  Same guidelines for skirt and then they could wear long or short sleeved shirts.

My only real complaint about dress code is that we were required to wear heels. They only needed to be an inch, but still 5+ hours going non-stop in heels sucks! We weren’t allowed to wear wedge style heels which was unfortunate because they are much more comfortable. Hostesses were also allowed to wear heeled boots if they wanted.

Lots of families came in to our location all the time, never had any complaints as the lounge is 19+ so children can’t sit in there anyways.  We also tried to keep lounge servers from running food in the dining room if we could help it. Honestly our locations had a lot of different girls from curvy to stick skinny.  I did find that the fuller figured girls rarely worked in the lounge side.  I guess I can understand why, although I don’t agree with it.  The best shifts and sections went to the best servers/sellers.  Had absolutely nothing to do with looks, our managers see our cash outs every day/night, they can see who is selling  the most and getting the highest bills.  They are going to give those shifts/sections to the server who is going to make them the most money plain and simple.  It all comes down to personality, even a 30 year old wealthy single man is going to tip a fake tit blonde bimbo a bad tip if her service is crappy.  However if the same man gets a server who might be more on the plain side but gives him exceptional service, she’ll see the money. Personality and service first, looks second (this is not accounting for dirt bags). I’ve seen blonde bimbos come and go because they were too dumb to carry a tray and take an order, so really looks are not everything. I mean obviously some unkept slob is not going to get hired, skinny or not.

Oh and to the girl bitching about how its so awful having to address people as “________ may I?”. May I is short for May I Speak? Every restaurant I’ve worked in for the past 6 years has practiced that.  It’s a way of making sure you’re not interrupting anyone, especially the chefs on the line. It’s polite and respectful, so get over yourself.

  132. Iris says:

ladybug889, and all the rest of you nay-sayers

Hospitality is a multi-billion dollar entrepreneurial industry that finances your cushy government job. Without it, you would have no salary let’s try not to be so condescending.

The work that people in this industry do is hard, and not everyone can do it. A small percentage of society can work in such a fast-paced and stressful environment while dealing with judgemental, righteous and opinionated customers arguing in their faces.

The industry is so large that if someone does not like where they are working, they have the option of working anywhere else. But no one here has a right to decide what is right/wrong for those employees because everyone has different values.

In other countries many women are dependant on prostitution and are genuinely happy. It is no one’s place to judge the decisions of others.

If you don’t like it, shut up and move on.

  133. nick says:

Why go to a restaurant if you do not like many of its aspects. None of this style of restaurant is selling quality of food!

  134. David says:

You people are idiots. Don’t like the dress code? Don’t go there. Problem solved.

I on the other hand like looking at boobs, so will continue to be a patron.

To the mothers in this conversation, Moxie’s isn’t a family restaurant, Jack Astor’s – also a bar, your 3 & 7 year old kids should be disgusted – same reason 30 year old single men don’t eat lunch at Chuckie Cheeze.

  135. Sheena says:

I have a job interview tomorrow for moxies, if anyone has any tips please let me know. From reading this, I don’t know if I want to work at moxies. I’m already tall as it is, wearing heels will make me taller than everyone else, and a shor black dress? This should be interesting.

  136. taylor says:

Iv worked at moxies for over 5 years. When I was a hostess I was told to put a cheque mark on resumes of girls that fit the profile. Men from head office would make frequent vistits to make sure the girls fit the profile. Many times when my managers knew head office was coming they would avoid scheduling certain girls so they wouldnt see them. There were many times when they would put a hit on a girl that didnt make the cut. This one girl who worked as a bar tender for around 2 years gained aboud 15 pounds and after one of our visits from head office she was removed from the lounge. Another girl they said she was to old (she was 27) and didnt wear enough make-up. Also you can be Kinda pretty to work in the lounge but you have to be really outgoing to make up for it, probley in hopes that youll be really flirty. Sometimes If the managers werent sure about putting a new hire in the lounge or the restaurant they would give them a hostess training shirft to see what they looked like in a skirt seeing host wear short skirts there too and most of them are around 17. One day this guy that I was serving was making rude and sexual comments to me all day(he was there from 1pm to 8 pm) I told my manager and she just kinda laughed and said I just need to get used to his humor. later I seen her at the table laughing and talking with them. When I was billing them I noticed she discounted all of their bills, she said it was because theyre regulars and spend lots of money there. When i was talking with other lounge girls about this they agreed with me that this guy is as asshole but justified it cause he tips well. He didnt tip me well I think because I wasnt humoring his gross behavior. This is a sick place to work and would recommend young pretty girls to work at a hire end restaurant where you can make the same amound of money and not have to be subjected to this. I have worked at more them one location in different provinces and the same things happen at all Moxies some are just worse then others.

  137. Good day, Neat write-up. There is an matter using your website with i . e ., may well go here? Web browser even now may be the industry chief in addition to a very good component other individuals will leave out there magnificent producing just for this difficulty.

  138. john says:

No one has said anything about how good the food?
It’s very good. Better than most. If a good looking lady serves me all the better. & I bring my wife
