No More Tomatoes…

No More Tomatoes…

While at Subway a couple of days ago I noticed they didn’t serve any tomatoes and had a sign stating it has been withdrawn for health reasons.

Turns out there’s an outbreak of Salmonella and some restaurants have decided to play it safe and withdraw tomatoes from their menus. Yesterday however I got tomatoes served at Dairy Queen so it varies from restaurant to restaurant and Health Canada hasn’t announced an official ban yet.

Unfortunetely for all of us tomato lovers, we’ll have to stop eating tomatoes for a while until it’s safe again 🙁

McDonalds had a sign up on the weekend too. I missed my tomato on my Crispy Chicken…it just wasn’t the same.

Yeah we were at Subway in Kitchener, Ontario last night and tomatoes were a no go as well…. they just had a sign up saying no tomatoes though…no reason why..

McDonalds told me all tomatos coming from the US are recalled. Doesn’t Canada have tomatos? LOL!

It is not all tomato’s, only certain types. Grape, vined, cherry, organic, greenhouse, or hot house tomato’s are all fine. Round, and plum tomato’s from some states are carrying the Salmonella. This is another sign that you should grow your own and or/ buy locally. In southern Ontario, tomato season is only a month or two away. Try to grow the best tasting and stay away from the cardboard flavoured imports. Some Roma tomato’s are quite good even if they are canned.

    Update on Tomatoes
While we are confident in our supply we are experiencing intermittent tomato supply issues due to the ongoing FDA investigation. In order to remain consistent throughout the chain and as a proactive measure for our customers we are not offering raw tomatoes until further notice.

We are monitoring the situation closely and any new information could change our approach.

Why dont we just use Canadian ones? Heck the Exeter greenhouses have tons! Theres tons of others too, yet again I wonder why we export what we grown, and import what we eat…. way to much. Common sense would be to keep this stuff for consumption in your own country. Especially since it wouldnt cost as much to transport within province. But hey, lets just keep buying steaks from M and M’s that are from New Zealand heheheeh…..

Back on tomatoes, I dont eat them anyways, too acidic for me.

I agree. Just eat LOCALLY grown ones. If you really want tomatos why would you get some from fastfood places? It’s not like adding a slice of tomato would subtract all the other fats and toxics from the burgers!!!! (sorry if I sound a bit agressive)
But there are lots of locally grown tomatos at the grocers, it tastes so fresh, jucey and tomatoy! And it is more profitable to buy tomatos that tastes like tomatos than ones delivered by truchs or planes!
Imagine going to the supermarkets and buy some red and jucey locally grown tomatos. You know where they are from, and mkaes you feel safer and more satisfying eating them!!

NOOO 🙁 I love tomatoes…guess I will just have to wait till ours get ripe

  12. My friend had tomatoes on his burger today, and I wasn’t sure if I should warn him about it. I think the place only used locally grown vegetables though (it was a local place, not a chain, etc.) so… maybe there’s no worry.

This is an american issue. American tomatoes may have salmonella, but canadian tomatoes are safe and a damn good reason right now to buy locally. So, to be clearer ONLY AMERICAN TOMATOES MAY POSE A RISK, not ALL tomatoes.

Tim hortons didnt put tomatoes in their sandwiches yesterday, but today they did again. Pita Factory had them yesterday too.
