No Wonder our Perception of Beauty is Distorted – Part II (Evolution)


Remember that breathtaking campaign by Dove for real beauty?

Well here is a follow up campaign entitled “Evolution” and also known as “Dove Onslaught”. I love this Dove campaign. Even if their ultimate goal is advertising, I think they’re sending out a wonderful message.

    Well, my daughter just laughed at all of that stuff, all the way through growing up and the hair colour du jour and various styles of makeup, she always had an essentially sane view of fashion, just was having a bit of fun with the dress-up part.

    Which makes me wonder, could it be that Dove is preaching to the choir, that there are in fact two species of women out there, one who is culturally bound to the Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fashion imagery and the rest who, for the life of them, cannot see how anyone could ever take that whole bulemic now-girl thing seriously? Or maybe it just has to do with how we raise them in a very fundamental sense, that some are driven into those getups to make a point or to get back at someone or to cry for help none of which are going to be seriously addressed by an advertising campaign, are they? The girls that agree will cheer yeah us and the girls on the runways will say “they don’t know what they’re talking about, and hey, the money is great!

    I think we’re already seeing some of the right directions coming out of prime time TV; we’re still seeing the valley-girl semi-models in key roles, but these days the more comely women are not necessarily the comic relief, although you can count the un-fashioned heroes (for both genders) on the fingers of one thumb.
