Once upon a time we were all kids. What was your fave movie?

caddyshack1

Yes, it’s true. Once upon a time we were all children. Back in the day movies seemed so much better then they do today. Movies such as Labyrinth, Never Ending Story, The Goonies,  Lady In White, (ok so not a kids movie but my parents were lenient on ratings) Pete’s Dragon, Secret of the Nihm, Little Shop of Horror’s, Ghost Busters, Beetlejuice, National lampoons, Animal House, Crocodile Dundee,   I could go on forever.

I think my favourite back then and still today is The Last Unicorn.  I remember watching it a few years ago and I bawled my eyes out. I never realized how “deep” it was.  As for “grown up” movies my pick has to be Caddy Shack! Seriously, who can forget the chocolate bar in the pool scare!

Some of my classics I’ve tried to watch with my children and they thought they were so lame. They dissed The Sword In the Stone. I never thought I’d hear someone diss that classic.  My oldest couldn’t even sit through Never Ending Story! Are you kidding me. He thought it was boring.

What were your favourite movies when you were a child? Do you still watch them today? I look forward to your  look back at memory lane.

Oh and Ps. I loved Howard the Duck as well. Also loved Cannibal women in the avacado jungle of death < I cannot BELIEVE my mother let me watch that! It starred Shannnon Tweed!

* Yes this isn’t a deal but us bloggers do blog about random things as well from time to time 😀 Have fun! It’s Friday!

I was definitely a “Star Wars” kid, but I had a few other favourites. I remember liking “The Last Starfighter” by proxy — my brother liked it, so even though I really didn’t understand it, I liked it too. The “Gremlins”, “The Jungle Book” and “The Dark Crystal” were also favourites. But my guilty secret pleasure was “The Princess Bride.” There were just so many funny lines and scenes in that movie, and the sweet parts appealed to my budding romantic side. It’s still a great movie IMHO.

I use to be in love with the 6 fingered man. He was so hot. Hot like Zorro *swoon*

Mary Poppins. 101 Dalmations. Jungle Book. Chitty chitty Bang Bang. The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes. I was a disney kid. The Wizard of Oz, Willy Wonka & Princess Bride are also up there. I’d still watch ’em….if I can find the time.

  7. Lori with three kids says:

We rented CaddyShack for our pre-teen son’s birthday one year and the kids all watched it downstairs. The next day we were going to bring it back to the video store, we watched it again. Did you know there’s a big sex scene in the movie! The kids didn’t say anything to us…. And We didn’t remember that part being in there. So just remember to pre-screen the movies you show your kids!!

Forbidden Planet starring Leslie Neilsen (before he was funny), Anne Francis and Walter Pidgeon. Also the best pirate movie ever, The Crimson Pirate starring Burt Lancaster and his best friend Nick Cravat who played a mute (to hide his Brooklyn accent) but who steals every scene he’s in. Many of the situations in Pirates of the Caribbean were copied from the Crimson Pirate.

  9. Litesandsirens911 says:

was always and still is my favorite movie: The Wizard Of Oz 🙂

  10. Jasmine says:

Rover Dangerfield the dog that gets no respect 🙂 Does anyone remember that movie ? It was the cartoon that Rodney Dangerfield did … It was hilarious

  11. Theresa says:

Caddyshack was on the other day, making my 43 year old husband laugh his head off. My faves were Ferris Buellers Day Off, any of the Rocky movies, Pretty in Pink, Top Gun and when it came out when I was in grade 9, Pretty Woman. My friend and I knew it word for word and thought Richard Gere was the hottest man on earth…what on earth were we thinking??????? EEEWWWW!!!! 🙂

  12. John says:

Who can forget Val Kilmer in Real Genius! He was absolutely hilarious! Of course there was also The Untouchables, Tucker, and Dead Poet’s Society.

Did I write this post last night while sleep walking?!?!? I LOVED THE LAST UNICORN!!!! As well as Never Ending story, Labyrinth, Goonies… Now days I also love National Treasure (the adult version of Goonies)… I’ve never seen Caddyshack thou… You obviously have AMAZING taste in movies so I’ll have to make sure I see it! Thanks for making my day!

  16. Johnny the Matt says:

Back to the Future and Disney Cartoons.
But as I read the comments, I can say that there were alot of good movies back in the day.

  17. John Holmes says:

@Lori with three kids: Cool mom. What movies will the kids get to see next? Forrest Hump, Riding Miss Daisy, Throbbin’ Hood. Sweet, sweet childhood memories.

  18. Bank Girl says:

Flight of the Navigator (1986) – a great kid’s movie I used to LOVE!!!

  19. vibrantflame says:

I watched Old Yeller and E.T. as a young child and bawled like a baby. I love the movies, but they were so sad! Well E.T. not so much, except when you think he dies.

I love ’80’s movies. Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and more that I can’t think of.

The Secret of Nimh was a great movie, but kind of scary. My three year old son LOVES Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and so does my niece.

I only saw the Labyrinth within the last five years, but it is amazing. I will definitely be watching that with the kids, as well as The Dark Crystal.

I find movies used to be more realistic and unpredictable then movies today. Also movies today are much more “glossy” whereas older movies look and feel more real. My husband convinced me to watch the Terminator series from the beginning (great movies btw) and I just couldn’t get over how real they felt compared to modern movies today.

  20. Ann says:

My favorite was Wizard Of Oz. When I was a teenager, it was Jaws. I know that’s a strange choice, but I love the water, and love sharks, so that was the best movie for me. I still watch it occasionally, and I believe that I’ve now seen it over 30 times. I pretty well know it word for word. My favorite scene is where Richard Dryfuss is diving under the boat and finds the tooth. If you don’t know what I mean, watch it sometime.

  21. selyz_gurl says:

Always, The ‘burbs, the Naked Gun, Back to the Future, are some of my favs.

  22. Sally says:

oH BaNK GiRl! I totally forgot to add that one. I actually have the remastered edition on dvd. Yet another movie my kids didn’t like. Nothings cooler then flight of the navigator!

  23. Daynalou says:

I have raised my kids with all the Disney flicks, My 14 year old was asked in science class if any one knew who Archimedes was and she shouted out the owl from sword in the stone,LOL. But at least they know the classics, our other family favorite is the Incredible Mr. Limpet, Don Knotts as a guy who turns into a fish and helps the US navy in wwII. We also love Iron Giant, did you know Jennifer Aniston is the voice of the mom and Vin Diesel is the the voice of the giant?
We also watch Rover Dangerfield and a sweet little independant called animated ink that has a couple of shorts in it about how we are destroying the earth with over use of fertilizers etc . A green message without it knowing it.

  24. Glen says:

    Back to the Future!!!!

  25. Stephanie says:

The Goonies, Lost Boys, Lucas, Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club and Footloose. I also loved Adventures in babysitting & Little Monsters . BTW I still love all these movies!!!

  26. SnowWhiteFanatic says:

Oh all you guys are making me feel nostalgic! Ladyhawke was one of my faves along with all the ones you Folks have mentioned 🙂

  27. mjtjmom says:

I loved and still love Sixteen Candles. I didn’t realize it when I met my husband to be how much he looked like Jake Ryan! (minus the Porsche, he had his parents Cutlass) I like most of John Hughes movies. If there is on TV, that’s what I’ll watch.

  28. Natalka says:

This sure shows what decade each of was a child in!
For me, as a child in the ’60s –
    Mary Poppins
    The Sound of Music
    Pollyanna
The Parent Trap (see the original, people!!!)
    Doctor Dolittle
    Chitty Bang Bang (the original)
    Wizard of Oz
    – then pretty much all of the classic Disney movies

  29. Melody Halls says:

My husband loved The Last Unicorn too and he just found it on VHS at a thrift shop for our kids who love it too. My favorite movie right now is Repo! The Genetic Opera. I’ve never seen anything so original!

  30. SarahLilly says:

Never Ending Story, Beetlejuice, An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991)!! lmao anyone remember that movie? Little mermaid, beauty and the beast (and probably every disney movie)

  31. poohbear says:

Oh Heavenly Dog. It was the first non cartoon movie my Mom took me to see. I loved watching Benji and grew up wishing I could look as beautiful as Jane Seymour. Chevy Chase never saw this movie saying it was his worst. I always felt it was his best. Everytime I see the movie I’m drawn back to an innocent time sitting with my Mom in the movie theater, listening to the rain pattering on the roof with the smell of popcorn thick in the air.

  32. Craig says:

I had a hard time really thinking about a particular favourite. I liked so many movies as a kid. But here are a few that came to mind… The Star Wars series, Willy Wonka, The Sound of Music, Smokey and the Bandit, Cannonball Run, and Meatballs.

  33. Sally says:

Meatballs was pretty good! So was spaceballs, revenge of the nerds!

I USE TO LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE American Tale!

“There are no cats in america and the streets are made of cheese!”

  34. Still a kid at heart. says:

Well, there are definately some great movies here but, these days I think we can all use “A Spoonful Of Sugar” because it helps the medicine go down. Of course the movie is … MARY POPPINS. I have it on DVD and still love it.

  35. I grew up in the black & white era, but don’t tell anyone, OK. So I’d have to say that Lassie was always my favorite. But now that I’m all grown up my favorites are the children’s stories – Babe, Ice Age and especially all the Land Before Time episodes. I can watch them every time they come on TV and never tire of them. Shows my maturity level doesn’t it?
