Starting this Monday, August 8th, Mendocino will be clearing out their Spring/Summer merchandise at discounted prices!
I’ve never actually purchased anything from there – it’s on the pricey side – but their stuff is nice to look at. I have, however, been in Mendocino while their sales racks were up and although it’s not a “awesome deal”, the prices are significantly less than that listed on the tag!

Did your skirt or pants just split? Like the pattern of a long sleeved shirt, but tired of wearing it? Can’t be bothered to alter a shirt that’s a tad too big? On the hunt for a new skirt style? Did you inherit a bunch of shirts from an ex? Well, here’s a cheap, diy answer…turn that shirt into a skirt!
I read about the idea here on Chictopia, but apparently, the Japanese have been pulling off this look for years! Why am I not surprised, there always ahead of us here!
Anyway, I decided to try out the trend for myself, and here are the results…

After trying quite a few button-ups in my closet, I settled on this snap button denim shirt which was a more relaxed fit. Shirt Skirt would probably work best with an oversized shirt, so that you can have more material to play with, and even make a bow out of the sleeves.
Minus the shoes, if you don’t have these items in your closet already, it’ll cost you $15 tops! I purchased both the shirt (GAP, $9.99) + vintage Christian Dior silk tank (~$5) at Value Village.
If you’re brave enough to attempt the look, here are a few tips:
– Do not use a slim fit shirt. There are just not enough buttons/material to work with!
– The look is meant to look asymmetrical. So a tail-cut buttom hem is probably a bit more flattering than a shirt cut straight across.
– Belt not required. Unless you use a short-sleeved shirt, the sleeves act as a belt, so skip this extra bulk!
– Try doing up the buttons asymmetrically, on the diagonal.
– Aside from button-ups, you can use other shirts as well, including cardigans and sweaters. If it’s a pullover, just make sure your waist fits through the neck.
– Play with different patterns and textures! This look is not meant to be Banana Republic-Safe. Try polka dots, florals, or even stripes!
– Balance out your proportions. Since the bottom is a bit bulky, with the sleeve-belt, pair it with a more fitted top.
– Have fun! Fashion is only about taking risks, but it’s meant to be fun as well. So don’t forget that!
Be brave! My version felt pretty secure. 😉

Wow, it’s already the beginning of August but the wheels are starting to turn for Back To School preparation.
The school our young children attend has opted to trial a balanced day “lunch” schedule. This schedule is new to us and we are unsure how to pack appropriately. We like cost effective means for lunches (with coupons from Smart Canucks) and also try to send them litter free meals (which isn’t always possible). Given our children will have 2 X 20 minute nutrition breaks instead of the standard snack, lunch, snack that we grew up with we are worried about not packing them enough or maybe too much.
We have managed to pick up a sample of a balanced day menu from our local health unit. like this one here. Some of the things suggested are excellent ideas while some of them (pancakes?) seem like an extra meal after a healthly breakfast at home. Looks likes it’s trial and error mostly.
Previously you may have noticed that we are very budget conscious so we like healthy cheap snack ideas. One of the favourites at our house is a “party mix” that my wife makes for her daycare. It mostly consists of goldfish crackers, raisins, cheerio’s and pretzels. Since it’s a mix we have often thrown in things like animal crackers, Shreddies, craisins among other things. It makes so much that it seems to last forever and the kids love it.
Eat Right Ontario has a lot of useful information about what to pack for a balanced day as well and what foods to keep stocked in your pantry, fridge or freezer to be prepared to make healthy school snacks.
Maybe try these fresh tasty ideas for a healthy school snack (or bake sale).
- Fresh fruit kabobs (For safety reasons use sticks or skewers that aren’t sharp)
- Oranges wedges, watermelon or grapes
- Fresh-cut veggies such as grape tomatoes, baby carrots (or cut your own carrot sticks) and celery
- One bonus suggestion is to add low fat salad dressing to the bottom of the cups for veggies, or low fat yogurt for fruit and keep chilled with an ice pack
Discount Alert! While researching I was browsing Scholar’s Choice Canada and noticed if you sign up for their e-mail newsletter you get $10 Off Your Next Purchase. You can sign-up on their website by clicking here.
Please share you healthy budget friendly snack ideas, savings, discounts or experiences!
