Last Minute Shopping Ideas – 4 Days to Go!

Other / Canada

[We’re in the last week before Christmas, and everyday until that very last minute we here at SmartCanucks will be bringing you some great but obscure gift ideas for that special someone]

You mustn’t forget Fido at Christmas! And what better way to thank him for year-long loyalty than to dress him in drag and let him loose on unsuspecting sci-fi conventioneers? If you happen to know a a Star Wars fan with a lovable pooch at home, you can’t beat a gift like this – especially for only $15.95 USD.

Besides – getting your dog bone shaped cookies and Kong Dong’s is so 1976. What better way to step boldly into 1977 than with an outift that screams “Help me Obi-Woof Kenobi, you’re my only hope!”
Pricess Leia Dog Costume available at CostumeCraze.

You’ll never find anyone who doesn’t like Tetris. It just won’t happen. Go ahead and try – I’ll wait.

See? Tetris is universally loved.

…and so is food! That’s why Tetris fridge magnets may in fact be the single greatest idea since the invention of rubber pants. At 278 rubels a set, these are clearly the real deal. That’s around $11 CDN for those of you who don’t memorize the daily foreign currency exchange charts every morning.

Tetris Fridge Magnets are available from Art Lebedev Studio.

Google Zeitgeist 2006 – The Years Top Searches

Other / Canada

Every year the good folks over at Google get together to tell us all about the things we’ve been searching for over the past twelve months. And so without further adieu, I give you the 10 most popular searches on google.com in 2006.

1. bebo
2. myspace
3. world cup
4. metacafe
5. radioblog
6. wikipedia
7. video
8. rebelde
9. mininova
10. wiki

It looks like technology ruled the roost again this year, with only the number three most popular search “world cup” avoiding the whole geek chic culture. But what’s that you say? You haven’t heard of half of the things on this list? That’s ok, neither have I — and I consider myself a pretty tech-saavy person. Yet I actually had to search bebo before writing this article just to make sure I wasn’t completely out of touch with the real world (for those of you scratching your noodles like I was, it turns out it’s a myspace-like community.)

If you want to see a ton of great top ten lists just like this to get a better sense of what held interest for people in the year that was, hop on over to Google Zeitgeist 2006. Everything from the top ten searches asking “who is” to the top ten searches for tickets are. All very neat stuff!

Announcements

Sorry everyone for my sudden absence… I was extremely busy these last couple of days. I’m glad JimmyCanuck kept you entertained with his enjoyable posts. Thanks Jim!

As Jim promised, we’ll be brining you the latest deals and greatest ideas for the last few days before Christmas 🙂

Last Minute Shopping Ideas – 6 Days to Go!

Other / Canada

[We’re in the last week before Christmas, and everyday until that very last minute we here at SmartCanucks will be bringing you some great but obscure gift ideas for that special someone]

Have an injury-prone friend? How about a breakfast-prone one? There’s no better way to cover up those bacon splatter burns than with Bacon and Egg bandages! Amazingly, this is the third time in my life I’ve blogged about bacon-related bandaging (nothing cauterizes a wound like pork!) But hey – fun bandages don’t always have to be about Dora and Care Bears you know. At $6.50 a tin, these make an excellent stocking stuff for anyone on your list.

Bacon and Eggs Bandages are available from the Canadian site Absolutely Fabulous.

Homer J. Simpson – Man, myth, and now …mouse! Everyone has at least one Simpsons fanatic in their circle of friends, and I can’t think of any better way to bring them some yuletide cheer than with a half-naked Homer floating around in a pool of blue water. In addition to its Simpsons-related coolness, the Floating Homer mouse isn’t lacking in any of your standard expectations – it’s a 2-button mouse with a scroll wheel, and it’s optical rather than antiquated. Not too shabby for a $17 USD price tag.

The Floating Homer J. Simpson mouse is available from USBGeek.com.

Hate iTunes? Want an iPod Anyways? Try Dopisp!

I don’t know about you, but I hate iTunes. And I mean HATE. I find it so unfriendly, so slow – in my books, it’s an absolute nightmare. But that hasn’t stopped me from wanting an iPod. As much as I hate to admit it there’s still nothing better out there than Apple’s little white pocket pal. Thanks to MGTEK there’s finally some hope for folks like me. So if you’re putting an iPod in someones stocking this year, why not tell them about Dopsip? It’s a Windows Media Player plug-in that will allow WMP11 to recognize the iPod just like it would any other portable music playing device.

Dopisp does have one limitation though, and depending on how you acquire your music it might be a real stick in the mud. Dopsip can’t sync any music with DRM protection, which means that if you’ve purchased music from the iTunes Store you won’t be able to sync it through Dopisp.

If you’re interested in Dopsip, I’d suggest getting it right away. It’s not available for purchase yet, but it is available for free as a two month evaluation copy. Give it a shot and let us know what you think!

Click here to visit the Dopisp site and download the free evaluation copy.

Stay Warm, Save Money

Thanks to global warming many of us here in the Great White North have been able to stave off the cold for a few weeks longer than we’re used to. As we creep closer to January though, it’s good to be prepared for the winter weather that awaits us and the high heating bills that come with it. The Ontario Ministry of Energy has put together a handy energy saving guide titled “Conserve Energy and Save Money.” Not only does it offer a number of handy tips for reducing your heating costs this winter, but it’ll give you some other environmentally friendly money saving tips that you can use all year round.

Heating-related highlights include;

  • Use area rugs on cold floors – if your feet are cold, your body will feel cold.
  • Clean or replace the air filter on your furnace every month to improve efficiency.
  • If you feel cool, put on a sweater rather than simply turning up the thermostat.

You can check out the online version of the guide here, or you can order a print version here.
