There’s a new way to rack up the Shoppers Optimum points without having to get another credit card.  Pretty exciting!  Starting March 17, 2012, RBC will be offering a Shoppers Optimum debit card that will allow you to earn Optimum Points when you shop with it.  Here are the key features of the new bank account:

  • Collect Shoppers Optimum points at Shoppers Drug Mart and other retailers – allows clients to use their RBC Shoppers Optimum banking account and debit card to collect Shoppers Optimum points.
  • More Rewards – The ability to earn points faster with unlimited debit transactions:
    • Earn 10 additional Shoppers Optimum points for every $1 spent at Shoppers Drug Mart using the RBC Shoppers Optimum Banking Account (this is in addition to the points earned using the Shoppers Optimum card)
    • Earn one Shoppers Optimum point for every $1 spent outside Shoppers Drug Mart using the RBC Shoppers Optimum Banking Account
    • Bonus Shoppers Optimum points – 50,000 bonus points for setting up a payroll or pension deposit to the new account and completing two online bill payments

It’s nice to have a non-credit card option to get some reward points!

About damn time RBC teamed up with a points program.
I have been with RBC for 25 years and have been waiting for this.
Our household doesn’t use credit cards, and we never carry cash. We only DEBIT everything.
Although I have the VIP plan(cause it covers all 3 of my accounts) through RBC, i will be switching over if it is comparable.
I guess i will have to wait until March to find out.

Wow! I was just debating opening a new account! This is awesome

Along with a $10.95 monthly account fee and unlimited debit transactions, the companies said the program will allow customers to earn Shoppers Optimum points when making purchases at Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix drug store locations as well as other retail outlets

I do not think $10.95 or over $120 annual fee is fair.

nope sorry still don’t like this bank and most likely never will, I use to have an account with them. I tried to close it after 6years and they wanted to charge me half the money I had in the account. I don’t thing its something you should do if you want any business.

Those holding MBNA Shoppers mastercard, best of luck of you.
Your account eventually will be under RBC file, expect more telemarketing calls from RBC for balance protector or balance transfer.

I also recently opened a BMO Club Sobeys account because I didn’t like the idea of having to pay a bank to hold and use my money. I’d love to earn extra optimum points but not willing to dish out fees.

  9. SavingMentor says:

Earning optimum points for debit purchases is better than nothing but it is going to take a serious amount of time to earn a significant amount of points with this. 1 optimum point isn’t very much. 10 pts/$ is the standard and this card only gives you 1 pt/$.

If you spend $25,000 in a year on your debit card you will have 25,000 points which is worth around $50. Meh.

Having been at a credit union for years with no monthly fees, I would want to be quite certain the card gain would be worth the monthly account fees.

  11. BetsyCola says:

Not worth it. I still find Mastercard Optimum the best out there. 25 points when you use it at Shoppers with you optimum card, 10 points if you don’t have optimum card and 5 points for every dollar outside Shoppers.

  12. Samantha says:

Shoppers points on my debit card + Shoppers points on their store optimum card + Unlimited transactions + No minimum balance.. Soooo excited

Thought I died and went to heaven…..OMG!!!

  13. Susan says:

I never pay a fee for a credit card! If your credit is good, ask them to have the fee waived. I use the BMO Gold Mastercard along with bonus miles you receive if you have a BMO bank account, and the Shopper’s Optimum Loyalty Card. Shopper’s Points actually mount up really fast and your still getting Air Miles!

  14. Al Krezanoski says:

I recently made two separate purchases using my shoppers RBC card and my optimum card. One purchase was for 18.37 before taxes and the other was for 13.32 before taxes. I was expecting 450 and 325 bonus point on each purchase and I only received 50 on each. What is happening to your point offer?
