Costco Canada has issued a recall of the Ajinomoto brand Yakitori Chicken with Japanese-Style Fried Rice due to a possible contamination of Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria monocytogenes is the species of pathogenic bacteria that causes the infection listeriosis, which can cause infections of the central nervous system.
Costco has confirmed that some Costco locations have given out free samples of the Yakitori Chicken with Japanese-Style Fried Rice, so if you have become sick from consuming the recalled item, call your doctor as soon as possible.
Keep in mind that food that is contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes might look and smell perfectly fine but it can still make you sick. Symptoms vary based on the state of the infected person, they can include: fever and muscle aches, often preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. In extreme cases, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, stillbirth, or miscarriage.
There have been no reports of customers falling ill due to the consumption of the Yakitori Chicken in Canada; however, check to see if you have this product in your home. If you do, throw it out right away or return it to the store where you purchased it for a refund.
