Seniors Day at Shoppers Drug Mart

Shoppers Drug Mart

Thursday is Seniors’ Day at Shoppers Drug Mart. This means you get 20% off all products in store. This time you also get a $10 gift card with the purchase of $50 or more 🙂

This event is usually the best time to buy an iPod since you can’t get a better deal than 20%…. and yes Shoppers Drug Mart does sell iPods, although they run out real quickly so make sure you know whether your local branch has some in stock.

You can read the weekly Shoppers Drug Mart flyer here

Ok, so I have a wee bit of a one-track mind when it comes to deals, but….

I tried my best squinting at the SDM flyer online (LOL)..it doesn’t say that baby items (ie formula?!?) are excluded…so does that mean I can haul my mother-in-law shopping on Thursday and get a sweet deal on baby stuff do you think??

    • John says:

I was told there was no seniors discount on prescription drugs and none on items that were already discounted (sale items).

  2. Boo Radley says:

    yup, I think you could.
As far as I know everything is discounted except for things like gift cards. But make sure the baby stuff is already reduced to get an even better deal 🙂

  3. tasha says:

I work for shopper’s drug mart and the way the seniors day thing works is,seniors get 20% off everything in the store excluding, phone cards, lottery, gift cards and tobacco products, so hope that answers your question, happy shopping:)

  4. Boo Radley says:

Thanks tasha and welcome to SmartCanucks.ca 🙂
It’s really nice to have a Shoppers Drug Mart expert here 🙂

  5. girlglory says:

Thanks Tasha!!! I am hitting up my mother-in-law to go shopping right now. YAY!!!!

  6. Andrea Timmons says:

Hate to break a bubble here but I read the fine print on the Shoppers website & it says the 20% seniors’ discount will only be applied to regularly priced items not to items already on sale.

  7. lydalouwho says:

How old do you have to be to qualify as a senior at Shoppers? I was there yesterday and was just given the seniors’ discount – at first I was kind of happy to receive the discount off my purchases and the coupon, but then it hit me as I was walking home that I look old!!!! Please enlighten me, someone, and let me know just how much older I am looking than I actually am!

  8. SDM says:

Officialty 65 but some store give it if you are 60. Sometime cashier give discount if you are young senior 50+. Post your picture let us decide how old you actually look.

  9. Suzi says:

Wow! This is great news. What age qualifies me as a senior at Shoppers Drug Mart, etc. ?

  10. Frirnds says:

    60 or 65

  11. mary ann says:

55 is senior at shoppers also I think its third thursday of each month

  12. Geo says:

It depends on the cashier; I was told at the store that the senior discount age is 65. I get good discounts in NOFRILLS pharmacy & I don’t need to wait for that one day of the month.

  13. jean says:

i wont to know when Seniors Day

    • Eileen Smith says:

Seniors’ day at Shoppers is every Thursday. Check before leaving that you did get the discount as I went home and they didn’t give me the 20% – went back next day and she said couldn’t adjust bill as it isn’t senior’s day and registers automatically change over. ??? 80 years

  14. Margaret says:

I think the discount only applies to items not already on sale

  15. Candace Kane says:

I’m don’t mind being a senior but at 48 years old I’m insulted and I’m a young looking 48 . the cashiers don’t like to work and are stupid, yelling out I gave you seniors discount.dufferin and lonestar.

    • Danielle says:

I agree. Cashiers should not give discount if customer doesn’t ask. It’s insulting to be asked if you want to claim when you’re 48. How rude and insulting.

      • Michele says:

Hi Danielle! I too was extremely offended when told I would get a seniors discount today. I was standing with a girlfriend who burst out laughing when the cashier informed me – so rather embarrassed as well. I should have asked the cashier how old she thought I was… I am 51… as far as I am concerned my mother IS a senior at 85. Shoppers should be a little more sensitive in training their staff as how to position this with their aging shoppers!! Enough said.

      • Lucy says:

I’m 46 and was asked the other day! I was super offended and the man behind even commented saying that there was no way I was close!!! I asked if I could have the discount anyway and she looked at me as though I was stupid – she was the one that asked me!!!!

    • Katherine says:

I too was extremely upset when the cashier assumed I was over 55. I am 47!! I’m already feeling vulnerable and low about myself right now, so this hasn’t helped one bit!!

      • FallenPixels says:

Katherine, one of my local SDM stores will give anyone who asks for the discount, even if you are clearly under 55. They messed up one of my Optimum offers giving me the discount

  16. Annoyed customer says:

I went to a shoppers drug mart after reading that you could get a seniors discount at 55. Although I am past 55, the cashier stated that I must be 65 to get the discount. Perhaps Shoppers should make sure their staff are aware that the age is 55 and not 65. Have no problem if id is required Never had a hassle at the Bay.

    • FallenPixels says:

As often stated, the official age is 65 but many stores say 55 but it really does depend on the store
I know of store where they give it if you ask for it, you could be 18 and they would do it

  17. Ananda says:

I work for Shoppers in cosmetics and always just tell people that since they’re spending quite a bit of money, they get 20% off. It’s hard to ask people if they qualify especially in cosmetics, I have quite a few customers that are in their 60s and look like they’re in their 40s. Please please don’t be offended if you get the discount, the cashiers are doing it just incase so you don’t miss out! 🙂

    • Twinky says:

‘Please dont be offended’? What comment could possibly be more offensive to a woman than to suggest she looks older than she is — hello???

      • Tina says:

Saving money does not offend me. I don’t really care how old people I don’t know think I am (54).

      • Ally says:

Older than you are? How old do you want to look when you’re actually a senior?
It doesn’t matter how old you look:) be happy!

    • Danielle says:

Don’t ever assume someone is a senior. Biggest insult ever. That happened to me and I am livid. Self confidence is a bit shaken. Your boss should warn everyone of you not to assume or judge someone’s age.

  18. Sharon says:

Amanda if customers are spending a lot of money at cosmetics and getting 20% off – how much money do they have to spend? And is the discount on a Thursday only when they are spending a lot at the cosmetic counter? I always walk out of the cosmetics dept with at $75 or more and have never ever gotten a discount. I am 54 too and have yet to get a seniors discount. My store is Brockville, ont Is it my store being in a little hick town compared to the city for discounts? Think I am gonna shop in Kemptville Ont and see if I can get a seniors discount.

  19. Linda Gibson says:

So if I go into my store in Barrie on Wellington with my husband who is 60, will I get the 20 percent off. Thats why I am taking him. Hes older than me!!

  20. Joan says:

up until recently I worked for shoppers and the senior discount applies to people 55 years old and older .That is the qualifying age among all shoppers drug marts and it only applies to regular priced items.

  21. Lorraine Richeer says:

im from a small town and they say senior is 65?
If you’re 55 it’s only the third Thursday of the month you qualify for 20% discount.
They are all Shoppers Drug Mart, why are they not the same.
Where i’m concerned over 55 should have 20% off every day they shop at Shoppers.

  22. Linda says:

seniors at shoppers have to be age 50 and over

  23. catherine dorton says:

Please train your staff not to automatically give the seniors discount to anyone they might think is a senior. I am not, and neither is my husband, and we have both been offered the discount. How insensitive!

  24. David says:

I’m a senior but sometimes can’t shop on discount Thursday’s. Can I give my significant other my shopper’s optimum card and visa so she can?

  4. seniorchick says:

Does senior’s day come once a month on a Thursday, or is it every Thursday? Or, does it fall on the first, second, third or fourth Thursday of every month?

  5. ContentedSenior says:

Today is Senior’s Day – and I received a 20% discount only on regular priced items, not the sale items. Is that standard?

  6. kathy says:

this seniors day thing seems to be somewhat unclear. when ever i ask a cashier at the store i get a different answer. tasha you didn’t mention it excludes precriptions but i would think it does. does anybody at shoppers who knowss the facts on seniors day please let us know – surely it cannot be that complicated. thanks

  7. Roy says:

You are all wrong! I was just there and in Barrie, Ontario at least it is 55 and it applies only to regularly priced items not items that are on sale.

  8. sandy says:

is itevery thurs or just one thurs a mo?th

  9. Duchesse says:

Shopper’s corporate web site states 65, with a personal Optimum Card.

  10. Marilyn Books says:

Which Thursday? Boo RAdley said THIS Thursday (dated Oct. 20.) But the website says the LAST Thursday. Is it the 22 or the 29?

  11. J says:

Item on sale are not applied towards the discount

  12. Susan says:

I was advsied by the cashier in Ottawa, the seniors age is 55 for the discount

  13. It is a hard thing to tell a person’s age: especially if the cashier is youngish her/himself. It depends what you are wearing that day.
When I was in London in the winter (it was huricane like wind) I only
had a scarf and my ears were freezing so I popped it on “a la queen” style adn was promptly give the senior’s discount at the abbey!
I was so offended….but my son told me that when I put the scarf on
i aged ten years for sure!

  14. Joanne says:

I was there today and the cashier told me 55

  15. Joanne says:

I was there today and the cashier told me 55. Unfortunately, (well, maybe not!!) I’m 54.

  16. nicole says:

how often do they have sales for seniors…once per month

  17. Killarneycat says:

My younger brother in NS gets a senior’s discount at age 57, yet here in ON, I’m told that I have to be 65 to qualify! I wonder why the HUGE disparity between stores? THey should all be the same! Get your act together!

  18. Dave says:

55 is the age to qualify at Shoppers

  19. jean says:

Seniors’ day every Thursday or only last thursday of month?

  20. Liz says:

I was originally told that 55+ qualified as “senior” at Shopper’s. Today, when I asked for the discount, I was told it was 60+; other times, it’s 65+. I am 58. I don’t like having the cashier yell across the store to a co-worker, “Hey, what is the age for seniors’ discount?”, or make me feel as though I’m getting away with something because she gives me the discount! There should be an established age, across the board, to receive the discount.

  21. Kathy says:

The first clerk at a Shoppers Drug Mart or anywhere else who asks me if I’m a senior, is gonna have a black eye! I’m 53 and have a good friend who was 48 when they asked her! She’s still dealing with the ego blow!

  22. Gisela says:

I have heard that Shoppers has dropped senior age from 65 to 55? Is this true? Above there is mention in 2007 that a cashier may allow a senior discount at 50+, but this sounds like a hit and miss depending on who serves you. Thanks.

  23. Sue says:

I just made a purchase with my mom and I am confirming that 20% seniors’ discount will only be applied to regularly priced items not to items already on sale.

On another note, the cashier said only the senior’s optimum card is allowed to be swiped. Otherwise, next time, she won’t be able to get the senior discount. Is this true? How does the system know? How does it work? Any thoughts?

  24. Natalia Rugg says:

Love the great savings at Shoppers! There is one point I would like clarified however; is EVERY Thursday Senior`s Day, or just a certain Thursday? I was told in one store in Saskatoon that it is every Thursday, and at another that it is not. Please enlighten me. Thank you

  25. Pauline says:

I was told that it was 55 as I stocked up on Chanel and Lancome products..cheaper than duty free and I don’t have to leave the ground in a tin can.

  26. Gordo says:

According to a cashier at Shoppers they give the senior discount if you’re 55.

  27. Gloria Watson says:

I recently shopped on Sr Day in Chatham ontario Shoppers Day. I was told that even though I was a senior that I could not receive the discount if I didn’t have an optimum card. I do but is this true and I really can’t see where she (not a friendly clerk) she gave me the discount…Thank you.

  28. ginny says:

I’m a senior, but my local store excluded items already on sale and cosmetics. May I suggest that details of exclusions be posted on your website.

  29. Harsh says:

    Hi,
when is senior day? How come somtime at 1st week of month & sometime last week of month?

  30. actos says:

whoah this blog is great i love studying your articles. Stay up the good paintings! You already know, many persons are hunting around for this info, you could help them greatly.

  31. Dave says:

every shopper’s has their own ‘age’ for senior’s qualification, my local SDM is 50, and another in London at ‘Maisonville’ is 65

  32. Derek says:

I went into Shoppers today (Thursday) and went to cash, expecting to receive a seniors discount. But they refused to give it to me because I did not have an Optimum card. I refused to make the purchase. Where in their rules does it say only for Optimum card holders?

  33. Derek says:

I went into Shoppers yesterday (Thursday) picked up some items, and went to cash, expecting to receive a seniors discount. But they refused to give it to me because I did not have an Optimum card. I refused to make the purchase. Where in their rules does it say only for Optimum card holders?

  34. marg says:

It is posted at the stores I believe, and they have told me 55+ so I have been enjoying rewards since I turned 55 !!

  35. Young Senior says:

Senior’s discount applies at 50 years old, at least it does at the Shoppers Drug Mart where I live. I was told this by the cashier.

  36. kunj says:

    all thursdays are seniors day? or only last thursday of the month? pl.clarify;
    thanks

  37. Susan says:

55 yrs is senior for Shoppers Drug Mart. I use my discount to by Baby Food and baby supplies for my grandson. It is a great savings and especially when you get an additional $10.00 gift card after you have spent $50.00. Things add up so I make full use of the seniors days to stock up on things for the month. The 20% is on everything in the store except RX’s.
