Shoppers Drug Mart: Bonus Redemption Weekend (June 26 – 27, 2010)

bonus-redemption2

OMG OMG OMG! This is the last Bonus Redemption weekend before the changes to SDM’s Optimum Points take effect on July 1st. Also, this is our last chance to use those coupons that are expiring on June 30, 2010. Lots of goodies expiring on that day. I love reading the “Brag” forum after one of these redemption weekends. Free stuff? YES PLEASE!

  1. Nancy says:

THANK goodness. I didn’t go on the last redemption day, and still haven’t used ANY of my points EVER at sdm for a redemption day. I’m definitely going to this one. Don’t want to lose out on my points after July 1st.

  2. Jerry Hung says:

Darn, I am at 33K points, not even 40K to redeem
Guess I’ll live out the new rules after July 1st… >_<

  3. seylz_gurl says:

Tx for posting. I was…going to hang on to my points until xmas but with the changes and a final bonus redemption here goes….

  4. Katty says:

I only have 60K points! May as well do the 40K redemption so my points are still worth a little more now.

  5. Deb says:

I’ll be redeeming all my points ASAP.
I still have to read about their new system! Wondering how bad it is.

  6. Natalka says:

grr… don’t have enough pts, even after last bonus day.
But I redeemed last time, so that’s ok!

  7. frizzhead says:

I redeemed 30k 2 weeks ago for a Wii Game …Can I return it to get my points back and redeem 75k this weeken?

  8. Shelly says:

    8,000 points = $10, 22,000 = $30, 38,000 = $60, 50,000 = $85,
    95,000 points = $170
    effective July 1, 2010

  9. Carol says:

Q – which “coupons expiring June 30, 2010” … how do you go about finding those? are they online?

  10. Sandy says:

@frizzhead: If the game is opened, they won’t take it back. If it’s not, you can return it for a SDM gift card for the dollar value, but you won’t get the points back.

  11. Jilly says:

Does anyone know if i can use my points + bonus to buy sdm gift cards? I have 80,000 points right now and don’t want to lose out on the July 1st change so ideally I want to cash out but I don’t need anything.

  12. honeydoo says:

OMG again! i have about 32,000… was gonna get a free Wii remote redeeming 30K.. don’t know what to do now >.<

  13. curious.. says:

Just wondering how you are losing your points after July 1st? The points needed are just a higher level and so is the dollar amount…so how are you losing out on your points? They aren’t erasing anything you already have….you just need to save a little longer now for a little more.

  14. Charles says:

@Sandy: If you get a gift card back when you return something bought with points, couldn’t you basically get a $200 gift card for 75,000 points on bonus redemption day by “buying” $200 worth of stuff with your points and then returning it? That way you could buy what you really want later rather than grabbing $200 worth of stuff that you don’t really need on bonus redemption day.

  15. Charles says:

@curious: Currently 75,000 points on a regular day = $150. So 1 point is worth 0.2 cents. With the change, 95,000 points = $170, so 1 point is worth only 0.179 cents. You lose out on (0.2-0.179)/0.2 = approximately 10%.

  16. Tony says:

I find it hilarious that this was posted by someone name irefusetopayfullprice yet they’re excited about Shoppers Optimum bonus days. Don’t you realize that if they can afford to give away all these rewards that they must be totally gouging you? Right now, you can redeem 75000 points for $150. To get 75000 points, excluding bonus days, bonus offers, etc. etc. that are just honestly too much work, you’d have to spend $7500. So, in the end, you got $7650 worth of goods for $7500. Or, you could save all the hassle and just save right off the bat and walk over to Walmart and get the same products for 25% less and pocket the difference. Frankly, I don’t understand the attraction to SDM.

  17. frizzhead says:

Thanks Sandy .. however was checking the SDM site and found this in the Exchange policy section
    PAY WITH POINTS™
•Shoppers Optimum™ Points used to pay for product will be returned if receipt is presented at time of return and within the 30 day timeframe.

Yes, the game is still unopened. I redemmed 30K for just 55?- to buy it, then bought the Wii and other stuff for 20x last weekend and got 45k, so figuring if I return th game, I can redeem 75k this weekend for 200/-. Am I on the right track or misinterpreting something?

  18. jax says:

Tony – you should check out some of the threads about SDM/Optimum points – it is absolutely , hands-down the best loyalty card program their is. Yes, it does take a bit of planning and obviously you want to shop on the bonus days but I buy very little at WM where I don’t get anything back for buying it!

  19. Valerie says:

Tony is smart. I often find make-up, feminine products and the list goes on cheaper at Walmart or Zellers or Loblaws… But the selection is nice.

I am kicking myself for cashing in my points last week, but with school year coming to an end and everything else bubbling like that pre-Christmas stew of activities and celebrations, I didn’t need one more thing on my plate.

If you have 40,000 points aka $75 to spend (instead of soon to be $60),
    here are my suggestions:
1 – PERFUME. Get the one you want for yourself. You deserve it.
2 – Sunscreen or after-sun lotion (facial sunscreen in a stick is cool)
3 – Summer meds (calamine, Polysporin, Band-aids, Benadryl, Gravol)
4 – Gift item for birthday, teacher, visitor
5 – That cute fish sculpture
    6 – Sunglasses and earrings
    7 – A pile of mags
    8 – Chocolate or candles

  20. Hope says:

Tony, I have a baby who I have to buy formula for (long story) – anyway, Yes it is $1 more a case at Shoppers, and the diapers are usually about $1 more a box (unless they are on sale), but I always stock up when there is 20X the points. Since she was born 11 months ago, I have redeemed for over $800 worth of free product with bonus redemption and regular redemption, and I can guarantee I haven’t spent $80,000 at Shoppers this year!

  21. IRefuseToPayFullPrice says:

Tony – You obviously don’t know the SC way to shop at SDM. For me, I can get 75000 pts by spending just about $300.

  22. kerry says:

I have 35,000 points, but if I get a prescription by friday,I will gain 6000 pts.by using one of my coupons in the booklet I got, from them.I will also save tax,as the hst comes into effect july 1st.

  23. kerry says:

I usually go to a shoppers that has a food store where I stock up on TV dinners, frozen treats, soups, coffee, chocolate bars, some over the counter medicines, and whatever is on sale that I like.

  24. Jen says:

I only have 15,000 points to redeem. Am I still able to get some sort of bonus redemption deal or is the minum for the bonus 40,000 points?

  25. Steph says:

sorry jen, 40 000 is the minimum for a bonus.

  26. Shelly says:

@ Tony, yes you do not know the SC way of shopping at SDM. To give you an example, we bought Acer netbook at shoppers for $249.99 (it was sold at Walmart, Costco and Bestbuy for $299.99) Shoppers also had 20X the points that day. So with taxes we paid $284.47 and collected 50,200 points which on bonus redemption days is worth about $125. So we got the netbook for almost half price. I redeemed my points on last bonus redemption week and stocked up on essentials such as detergents, toothpastes etc and Oh!! I did not pay full prices for those either. Tide was on sale for 4.99 (regular 9.99), I used $1 off coupon and got it for $3.99….the list goes on..

  27. Charles says:

Isn’t that kind of Tony’s point though, that for Optimum points to be worthwhile you can’t just shop, you have to “game” the system? I agree with both sides… yes Optimum points can be a great deal, but in order for it to be worthwhile you have to research sales, go on specific days, even do things like reserve certain products before redemption days, etc – it’s a lot more work than just using a rewards credit card or something. If you shop at SDM without doing the research, you -will- be ripped off, points or no points.

  28. seylz_gurl says:

Question about the kickback pts….so if you spend 75,000 pts when are the kickback pts applied to your account. Can you spend them the next day? And how many do you get for 75,000. Thanks.

  29. Annie says:

sorry i never use my points before so I don’t know
QUESTION: do you just go there and spend the points and you will free gifts or what…. thanks

  30. bobby says:

does anyone know which store carries the netbook in york region ontario. thanks

  31. Charles says:

Bobby – try calling the store at Yonge/Finch? I think they have a pretty big electronics dept, and they are 24 hours.

  32. bobby says:

    thanks Charles, will do

  33. kerry says:

Just got my prescription and am ready to shop til I drop on saturday.I go to 5 or 6 shoppers just to check out there bargain shelf.Got a febreze type candle for only $2 regulary 6.99,and campbells chunky microwave bowls at only $1.I was at london drugs today, with flyers in hand for them to match any sale price on items I was buying.Thats they’re policy, they will match any flyer price on an item they stock.ajax 2 for a dollar was one of my deals..

  34. mel says:

I have just called at least a dozen Shoppers in Toronto and none of them got any netbooks.

  35. Jill says:

NOt sure if anyone noticed the flyer, but the deal isn’t as the image in this post suggests.

Spend 40,000 points and get $85 worth of goods – an extra $10
Spend 75,000 points and get $170 worth of goods – an extra $20

Not the usual bonus redemption, but I guess it’s better than nothing.

  36. Happy says:

Jill – are u in Ontario? my flyers said 40000 pts get $100 & 75000 pts get $200!

  37. bobby says:

no netbook available at all … finally got a Sanyo Digital Camcorder, on sale at $219, so with the redemption of 75,000, I only have to pay $49 – it’s the better deal i can come up with

  38. Jen says:

Happy – I’m in BC, Vancouver area. We’re getting ripped off out here!

  39. bobby says:

    how so

  40. Charles says:

Bobby: If you wanted to, assuming you haven’t used it yet, you can return the camcorder and get its value on a gift card. That way you can “save” the bonus points by turning them into cash, and using it some other time when there’s a better deal for you.

  41. Ciel says:

I haven’t accumulated thousands of points. When I do my usual purchases, afterwards I log into the Optimum page and donate my points. Those donations help non-profits, so if you don’t want to use your points or save them anymore, give them to a cause on the list.

  42. kerry says:

I think the Ontario people get a higher value for they’re points, because they don’t get prescription points of any kind.We too used to get the higher redemption days, but that stopped about a year ago out here in Vancouver.I cashed my points in today for 85 dollars worth the free stuff for 40 thousand pts.The only disappointment was a peak freans cookies variety that was 3.79 not 1.88 as advertised.Thats one of the store tricks, just put part of the line of sale…..

  43. Ciel says:

That pricing issue-cookies rung up at higher, different price than advertised: if it is a flyer item, then it is worthwhile to carry the flyer with you to show to the cashier if s/he is not familiar with the pricing for the week.

What’s harder is knowing that the shelf talker or card reads one price (lower) than what the computer database gives the cash register upon code scanning. The shelf talker can be expired, if it is not dated and possibly overlooked by shelf stockers or storefront manager.
