Sobeys Store Closings – Check Yours – Massive Clearouts

sobeys store closings

While it was widely advertised that some Sobeys stores in Western Canada would close as part of their deal with Safeway, many Ontario residents are finding their stores are closing too.  Some will be closed while others will become FreshCo stores.

A downtown Toronto store closes today, while Hamilton’s second store is closing this weekend, and other stores have already closed.   More are set to close including Windsor, who are also losing their Tecumseh Food Basics store, over the next few months.

Check out this amazing sale at the Hamilton (Queenston) store, you can buy anything in the store and get 50% off at the cash.  Check with your local store to see if they will be closing because you can pick up some great deals in their store closeouts.

The Globe & Mail says they are set to close another 50 stores – announcement will go public today

  2. Thanks for posting! Got there just before they closed for the night and picked up a bunch of stuff. There were only two aisles left when we got there, mostly organic/health food, spices, and jarred sauces. There was still a freezer full of Hagaan Daas and lots of Kraft Singles when we left.

Loblaw’s has a huge monopoly now. I’m surprised anyone can compete!

sobey’s was a great store but extremely expensive except some of their sales. Their slogan was “ready to serve”
My slogan for them was “ready to rip off”. People can’t afford to pay the high prices. No Frills/food basics and freshco have some great prices. zehrs and superstore are pricey too.

    It’s just so sad.

Yes, some of their prices are high, but not as bad as Loblaw’s. Sometimes, they have very good deals and the one in our neighbourhood always managed to keep their price of Naturel milk (one of our staples) at a very low cost (same and sometimes even lower than our local Wal-Mart). They also have things we can’t find anywhere else. Things started to go down hill when they stop having reduced meat and baked goods. I learned from someone in Seafood that they rather throw out their stock than selling them at a lower cost – which didn’t go well with us at all. Overall, most of the staff at our local store are always very nice and helpful, which is very hard to find nowadays, so really feel bad for them.
