Target – The Answers To Your Questions

Policy-PriceScans

When I mentioned I was going to Target, many of you had questions.  So here are the answers:

What kind of clothing do they have?  What are the prices like?

They have quite the assortment.  The clothing section is bigger than that in my local Walmart and well organized.  They currently have a lot of summer clothing out with great prices.  There are some pictures in the slideshow.

Do they have any plus size clothing?

They did not seem to have a plus size section, but many of the clothes in the regular section went to XXL

What kind of baby products do they have & what are the prices like?

I am the last person you should be asking about baby stuff, but I took lots of pics.  If you click on the slideshow you can view the images bigger and maybe even see a few price tags 😉

Do they have craft stuff? Knitting etc

No, they did not.  I asked an employee and she said the selection did differ by store but it did seem to be something they were missing and she would bring it up.

What are their DVD prices like?

They have a selection for under $10 (a fairly large selection too) and the rest were reasonably priced but not super cheap.  They have a large Blu-Ray section for under $15 and a music section for under $5

Do they have my favourite “insert random US product here”

Unless it is one of their brands, (Up&Up, Every Day Market, Archers Farms etc) no they do not.  Most of the foods are from Canada, the prices on their brands from the US are higher here which they attribute to shipping, import costs and the dollar.

Food Prices? Shredded Cheese prices? They are so cheap in the US

Sorry, nothing was super cheap in the food aisles.  Their cheapest own brand of shredded cheese was $5.48, Kraft was $6.99.  Many people were commenting that the discount grocery stores (No Frills, FreshCo, Food Basics etc) were cheaper.  They do have a decent selection, but it does not rival that of a Walmart SuperCentre.

What kind of milk do they carry? How much is it?

They carry Neilson milk and the regular type, 2% 4L bagged milk is $4.24

Some other interesting stuff that I noticed but was not asked:

They are not pushy about the RedCard but they were a little slow in the CS line dealing with the cards.

They have a 25% discount on all books, which is great given the Canadian markup on them.

They are quite Apple centred for electronics.

You get a 5c discount on your shopping for using reusable bags!

Having worked at a walmart, i can tell you that at $4.24 for 4L bagged milk, they’re either braking even or loosing money. It is mainly just to get more people in the door.

Like the part of a 5c discount when you bring reusable bags, and free bags if you don’t. hope it lasts a while

Wow, I know of no place that cheap here for milk in New Brunswick (if anyone does, tell me!). Here the cheapest tends to be $6/4L jug. >.<

Some provinces legislate milk prices to protect dairy farmers, Ontario is not one of them
This week, No Frills had 4L for $3.88, SDM has regular prices of $4.13-$4.29 depending on area
Even the corner store is $4.99

I don’t consider Target to be a discount store at all; not sure why they’re touting it as such. If anyone has ever been to one the US, you’d be silly to expect Target to be a ‘cheap’ store here. I’ll just be going for the variety.

When Target was announced for Canada it was also stated that they were going to be sourcing their food from Sobeys, so they are not actually contracting directly with food manufacturers. So food prices should be in line with other stores with I’m sure a few loss leaders for flyers like everyone else.

Cheapest milk in NB is usually at SDM, and I haven’t checked recently but I remember in Alberta the milk was cheapest at Great Canadian Wholesalers. And yes milk prices vary GREATLY across provinces.

I’m like Robin up there. Baxters or Northumberland milk is about $6 for a 4L bag (currently $6.19 at Atlantic SuprStore). Not sure how they get away with $4.24 – even CostCo doesn’t go that low.
