i find zehrs kind of $$ compared to other stores and even with no gst/pst , i bet i could get it cheaper at another store. 🙂

The problem with the above statement is that Zehrs (what is called a conventional store) is too often compared to the discount banners. Zehrs (or Loblaws), A&P (soon to become Metro) and Sobeys should be compared to each other. They are conventional formats.
Food Basics, No Frills and Price Chopper should be compared with each other because they are discount formats. If you look at Zehrs compared to A&P or Sobeys in my area they are lower in price but carry more variety and service than the discounters.

Your absolutely right Ergo, but I have a choice between Foodland, Food Basics, and Zehrs.

Zehrs wins hands down, they have the best selection, better food products, and I like my stuff fresh and the other two weren’t providing me that. I hate getting home and finding out 10 things you bought are ‘bad’ and then have to turn around and return them.
Zehrs has been lowering prices on quite a few items lately so I’m estatic with that.

If you live in a more populated area you have more choice. But for now Zehrs is my grocery store 🙂

What are the prices at RCS like? We don’t even have those here, are they as expensive as Zehrs? Or cheaper?

Those are some excellent points Alice. I ususally group the loblaws ones together and the A and P ones together. I know that the Valumart in the next town is more pricey then our Zehrs, and in the other town closest to me the Independent is crazy priced.

RCSS is pretty good in comparison of their prices to a conventional Loblaws – they’ve got lower pricing and price locks on a lot of items, the price locks usually last minimum 3 weeks up to 3 months depending on the product.

Zehrs would probably be a little more expensive than RCSS, but No Frills or a franchised based supermarket like that would be cheaper even though they still carry the PC product line.

    “franchised based supermarket”~Adam

I will only buy canned goods and sometimes produce from franchised based stores whether an independents or a national chain.
I know a refridgeration mechanic and he told me those freezers break down often. So if the product in those freezers are the owners personal money…….well I think you know what I mean.

  6. Sally says:

    But its not walmart Alex!
Yes they do break down often, you can tell with frozen veggies if there in a clump. Its one reason why I stopped shopping at the Foodbasics here. That and I kept forgetting to bring my own ice pick to purchase icecream.

    Hi Sally
I would suggest that corporate stores would be less likely to take those kind of chances. That would include Walmart. However Walmart has a long list of human rights issues and labour issues.

Mexico’s Supreme Court slams Walmart’s labor practices
    8 hours ago

MEXICO CITY (AFP) — Mexico’s Supreme Court compared the practices of US retail giant Walmart in Mexico to employer-worker relations during the dictatorship of former president Porfirio Diaz.

Diaz served as president and absolute ruler of Mexico from 1877-80 and from 1884-1911.

Mexico’s top court on Thursday backed a Walmart employee who had complained that vouchers handed out by the company as part of its salary payments could only be spent in the company’s stores.

The practice of vouchers “that come from the worker’s salary only to be exchanged in the management company’s establishment is similar to what happened in old company stores (that existed during Diaz’s dictatorship),” the court said in its decision.

The only difference was that under Diaz’s system, workers had to pay a high price for the products they bought with their vouchers, the court added.

But, in both cases, “the cost of the respective discounts were absorbed by workers, not bosses,” the court said.

The company stores under Diaz’s dictatorship were abolished under the 1917 constitution.

Mexican non-governmental organizations last November called for a boycott of Walmart to protest low salaries and working conditions of its employees.

Walmart is the largest private employer in Mexico, with 157,000 employees, according to Mexican media.

    hey there,

i went to the superstore tonight and did groceries. what i didn’t realize is there’s almost no tax on food anyways. i did an 80$ grocery and saved about 67 cents on the total….sounded like a great deal but really isn’t worth it unless your buying electronics or such.
