WALMART Canada Labels

Source: I almost killed my family this morning making pancakes. I think it’s time Walmart put some variety in their labels.

oh my goodness!! that is SO scary!! WOW!! at a loss for words!

  2. Natalka says:

Gee, I’m glad you caught your almost mistake.

Just a household hint – I keep my cleaning products in a place totally away from any food products.

  3. Sue says:

Please tell me that you sent this information to wal-mart. Hopefully they will change the labels. If nothing else it would be worth it to contact the local tv news department. I am sure they would be interested!

  4. Ashley says:

Omg! Wow they look almost identical! Walmart really needs to invest in better branding for their products…very scary!

  5. operabob says:

I remember when WM threatened to sue SC.

Looks like the table (or pancakes????) turned now Wally World! 😉

  6. L. Wilson says:

I love that the picture was taken in front of a mouse and skull in a jar…

  7. Angie says:

Oh for crying out loud. What MORON keeps their cooking spray in the cupboard next to their furniture polish? They deserve to have lemon-flavoured pancakes. Idiot.

  8. Lucid says:

When did walmart threaten to sue smartcanucks? This is pretty scary, but honestly, why were they ever in the same place? One should be in the kitchen and the other in a cupboard with other house related supplies…

  9. freebielovingmama says:

OMG! Scary! No they should not be near each other in your home but say you bought both at the same time and switched them putting each in the wrong place. Accidents happen, but I know now I will certainly double check! Better safe than sorry!

  10. Oh Goodness!!! Thanks for the laugh though. Havent had a good laugh in a while. I agree, more variety please. Sorry that was a close call.

  11. momof_four says:

Oh my goodness! I could totally see doing that absent-mindedly, in fact the packaging is so close it wouldn’t take much absent-mindedness at all! Thats awful.

  12. Lucid says:

That was low of them to do. How did you resolve the issue (of Walmart threatening to sue)?

And more importantly, why are they not suing now? I see Walmart realated deals on this forum all the time… this just made me like the store a whole lot less. I won’t be shopping there if I can avoid it. >_<

  13. Boo Radley says:

It ended very peacefully with Walmart: They said deals and flyers can be posted on here as long as they have been officially released to the public. So say people get a Walmart flyer in the mail, it can be posted on here without any problems. But if someone gets the flyer like 2 weeks in advance because they work at walmart then it shouldn’t be posted.

  14. FatB says:

Maybe they’re the same product just with different scents. =P
For that beautiful, buttery shine for all your fine furniture.
    2-in-1 product, ingenious!

  15. Mike says:

I have little sympathy for anyone who chooses to shop at Wal-Mart. When you’re buying something, don’t always choose the cheapest price (which Wal-Mart frequently isn’t anyways) as this low price comes at a cost. Shop ethically, and sleep well knowing that you haven’t contributed to global corporations taking advantage of third-world countries as well as their own employees living down the street from you.

  16. L says:

no offense, but why on earth do you have furniture polish in with your food?? keep it under the sink!

  17. ssss says:

We’d definitely keep these 2 away from each other in my house when storing, but I can easily see how I or anyone else in the family could mistake one for the other and store them in the wrong spot… which would lead to BIG trouble. Walmart should change this ASAP.

  18. julyprincess says:

    THANK YOU INDEED WALMART!

  19. LeveledOut says:

Maybe they’re the same product just with different scents. =P

*inhales deeply* *then lets out a loud ___ * AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  20. Erin says:

I agree with ‘L’… why do you have your furniture polish with your cooking spray – that is a recipe for disaster. And yes – that is pretty scary how similar they look!

Life at Wal-Mart: The Workers Speak, Vol. 1
    http://gawker.com/5664893/life-at-wal+mart-the-workers-speak-vol-1

“A few years ago I spent a summer working at Wal-Mart between my second and third years of university. I’m Canadian, and the Wal-Mart I worked at was located in a city of about 50,000 people. I wasn’t particularly enthused about spending my summer working there, but I was a student and I needed money. Here are some things that stick out in my mind about the experience: […]

Wal-Mart is definitely anti-union. During my employee orientation, myself and a few other new hires were made to listen to a lecture from the store’s HR manager about how unions aren’t “necessary” at Wal-Mart because the employees are all treated “very fairly”, and about how we should report any evidence of union activity to our supervisor. We were also strictly forbidden from discussing our pay with other employees.” […]

  22. Robin says:

    It is not only wal-mart.

I notice it at coop to that so many products have almost identical packaging. And it has to be said that its almost always there “own” store brand.

Just read the labels and you should be fine 🙂

  23. Candice says:

    oh my!

  24. Melody Halls says:

Oh my goodness, food products should be stored AWAY from cleaning products except for maybe baking soda and vinegar.

  25. me! says:

the way i took it was the person bought the 2 items from the same spot on the shelf, came home put them away thinking they were both pancake spray

  26. honeydoo says:

    yikes!
but you’re not really doing your family service using either of those products.. there’s probably as much crap in the cleaner as the butter spray

Quebec Superior Court Ruling Brings Jonquiere Walmart Workers One Step Closer to Justice
    http://stockmarketsreview.com/pressrelease/2010/10/15/court-win-for-quebec-walmart-associates/

“Nearly 200 former Walmart workers are one step closer to justice after an October 13 decision by the Quebec Superior Court, which upheld an earlier arbitrator’’s ruling that found the world’’s largest retailer acted illegally by laying off 190 employees at its Jonquiere store on April 29, 2005.

Shortly after UFCW Canada Local 503 was certified as the Jonquiere Associates bargaining agent, and the parties were ordered by the Labour Minister to participate in binding arbitration, Walmart shutdown the unionized location — claiming that the busy store was losing sales.

UFCW Canada has long-maintained that Walmart closed the Jonquiere store to prevent its employees from exercising their labour rights, and thwart the practice of bargaining collectively with its workforce in Quebec.”

  28. Mush says:

obviously if you read it then you wont have a problem but if you cant read, lol to you.

  29. Mike says:

Sorry to hear about the close call with the packaging.

Technically, Wal-mart is endangering families all over the world by offering low level jobs, refusing to unionize, and for their horrible environmental impact.

The world would be a happier and healthier place with out it.

People are addicts of Wal-mart, which is no better than being addicted to an illegal substance; So a bunch of people will probably try to say that there is nothing wrong with the corporation. I factually disagree.

  30. Minou says:

Did this really happen to you, Boo, or was this posted by someone else? What happened?

  31. kris says:

i’m sorry what happened? i can see just the pic of the cooking spray. I am curious. My good monitor broke now i am using my old skool one and it is real dark, lol.

  32. Couponer says:

Oh my goodness…….I laughed pretty loud when I read that….but thank goodness you noticed in time LOL

  33. Tammy says:

    ROFLMAO!

  34. thaichips says:

    lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. Colleen says:

Why do people shop at Wal-Mart, and more specifically buy Wal-Marts branded products? Because it’s cheap. One of the ways they keep costs down (other than paying their employees very low wages, and offering poor benefits packages) is generic branding. If you want better labels, you have to pay for them! Anyway…that butter spray is crap and the packaging is full of chemicals that you shouldn’t be feeding your family. Use real butter. Same goes for the furniture polish. Make your own, its cheaper…. and stop using aerosol cans!!!

  36. Skippy says:

Mike and Alex are both right.
Walmart is American Imperialism at its finest!
Trouble is, no one realises it because they want cheap prices, no questions asked.

  37. sally says:

Im sorry but I kinda giggled, who keeps the furniture polish next to the spray butter? I haven’t ever owned a can of spray butter though.

On the good side though I dont think you would of killed your family you would of noticed right away when you went to eat them.

  38. bluerose says:

Wow a picture worth a million words, you are a smart cookie to see that they are so similar but how about the children can they ?I do not think so thats what theses companies have to think about.

  39. Alee142010 says:

I have noticed similer problems with other things.. There is this cleaner that looks exactly like a gatorade type drink, and I can’t remember its name, but it was something like “cascading waters” or something… Its in a clear container and has the same packaging as a sports drink would have!

  40. Trevor says:

This is another reason why I will never shop at Walmart. From the bad customer service, “reputation” of lower prices but is not, poor treatment of employees, disregard to environmental concerns….. SAY NO TO WALMART!

  41. Insane says:

I had a laugh too. If someone keeps their furniture polish beside their cooking spray (and on a personal note-eewww Walmart 100% chemical cooking spray) then you made your own bed! Really, like why not keep rat poison beside the coffee whitener?

  42. Chris says:

I could see this happening if you weren’t paying attention too close when you were putting stuff away.

  43. anti-walmart says:

all walmart stores should be unionized. end thsi 3rd world pay for workers not to mention the high on power management.

walmart is scared in their boots. any store that has tried to unionize has been shut down. think I’m wrong…look it up!

  44. Ann says:

I agree with Chris above. Maybe when they were purchased, the put them in the wrong cupboard. Maybe her husband did it. From my experience, men don’t always read the labels, or teenagers for that matter.

  45. Jenn says:

I agree the cans look similar but really…? – Just a tip though I keep my cooking products in a seperate cupboard then my cleaning products!

    Wal-Mart Quietly Raises Prices

  47. patty says:

    Oh, wow!!! <=0

  48. sally says:

unions aren’t all that fantastic either. Honestly they are no different then Zellers or any other big box store. They all get paid the same and same benefits. I know lots of Walmart workers and there all fine.

  49. BewilderedBrunette says:

Cute…But whats with the mouse and skull in the jar?

  50. lisa says:

Possible as she was putting away the products, she didn’t really look at them and just assumed it was the cooking spray and just put in cupboard. I’m sure she’s not that much of an idiot as per a comment someone wrote. Really don’t think that comment was called for

  51. britt says:

Maybe learn how to read the labels before using products

  52. oh crap I need sleep…I just spent literally 30 seconds trying to figure out what he was talking about…duh!

  53. couponfreak says:

You know this is a good point I am sure I am not the only person who has seen people ditch unwanted items this could easily happen to anyone. They look close enough to the same that if you were infront of either item and you grabbed one off of the shelf you could grab one or the other.Another thought what about people who can’t read if the furniture polish was in a food isle it could easily be mistaken for some sort of lemon spray as it has a big bowl of lemons on it. It would be nice if they would at least colour code bottle tops or something (red is chemical ..green is edible etc..)

  54. anti-walmart says:

had worked @ walmart for years. the rollbacks were just that rollbacks. each morning the dept mgr got a sheet that needed to be gone through. each sku that needed to be changed…was, if the dept mgr didn’t get it done…it would be a rough talk…if it happened a couple times it was coaching as they were not doing their job.

what no one really knows aside from staff there is another sheet that comes. this one has again price adjustments however these were the prices to be raised. I always laugh, put one price down, one goes up. you want to really know what $ value the customer is suppose to save…add up both sheets…you’ll be surprised…but staff wasn’t!

if your a smart consumer, as most SC’s are keep an eye out you’ll see a pattern when something goes down for that mystical rollback, very quietly others will go up.

    I know this 100%.

Come on people – Boo made a funny – a REALLY funny funny! ROFL

  58. Natalie says:

That would not have tasted good:(

  59. Elizabeth Blaze says:

LOL! Considering what’s in the jar, we should be glad that Walmart doesn’t make Great Value brand spray on rat poison and/or arsenic!

  60. Samantha says:

We live in a busy world YES! That is a fact! Did you not notice the similarity when the 2 items were originally purchased? Why on earth would you have anything marked POISON near ANYTHING COOKING?????? Also, to the comment made about children noticing the difference between the 2 packages… Who would allow a child ACCESS let alone use of any hazardous items?? They are labled NOT TO ALLOW CHILDREN and KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN!!! Furniture Polish is POISON and NO child should ever have access to it PERIOD whether they can read or not!!! BOTH items are also AEROSOL! They can EXPLODE, spray themself or someone in the eye, start a fire! And who’s to be held accountable then? Walmart? The Manufacturer? NO!!!! The ADULT!!! And furthermore, I assume that the like minded adults here whom are on joining forces to make Walmart responsible for someone whom CLEARLY should have READ THE LABEL, have learned a very VALUABLE LESSON, and are more aware of the importance of taking TIME to follow directions, as well as LOCKING or KEEPING ALL CLEANING/HAZARDOUS/EXPLOSIVE PRODUCTS AWAY WHEN NOT IN USE!!! It’s called COMMON SENSE!!! But, apparently common sense went out the window ages ago as its not that common anymore! Clearly some parties here feel it necessary to find BLAME on a company that has created products for peoples FINANCIAL CONVENIENCE, rather then take a long hard look at the facts here!!!!! Im truly happy that this situation didn’t cause a SERIOUS outcome! Make it a LESSON rather then a point the finger, when you should be pointing the finger at YOURSELF!!!

  61. Darran says:

If it’s from an aerosol can it likely has butane ingredients. So your still making breakfast with contents from a bic lighter. Yummy!

Wal-mart sucks. They destroy decade old family businesses. They should be nationalized and done away with. Their “low” prices in the long-term are more expensive. They cater to hockin garbage made on mass by the chinese slave labor market. They should NOT be calling themselves a grocer either. They re akin to an insisious invasion force.

    GO Vegan!

Very interesting anti-walmart. WM got taken to court and was forced to stop claiming to always be the lowest price because they were not.

  64. Rachael says:

Wow people really need to get a sense of humour. This was supposed to be funny. Not your chance to get on your Walmart-is-evil soap box. Lighten up!

  65. Kevin says:

  66. Jeff says:

How is this Walmarts fault. Read the label and even more importantly, put your cleaning supplies well away from food.

Well now im off to make a stir-fry with motor oil

  67. Peter says:

    idiot

  68. Cheap says:

With a good lawyer and your photo of the two products, I am certain that you would have gotten away with the crime.

  69. Samantha says:

Can someone enlighten me with which part of this entire topic is supposed to be funny? Because it appears we are on this topic because someone felt need to choose negligence instead of common sense in her life! Some felt it was Walmarts fault because of their label being to similar to another label when a someone went to make pancakes and sprayed her pans with furniture polish! These people instead of telling her to involve media, newspapers, other people and Walmart in general, should be the ones telling her to use her bloody head! Instead of BROADCAST IT through SC looking for sympathy, where instead someone should have Smacked you in the forehead and asked you if you had a V8 that day! Negligence isnt Walmarts fault!! Thats horse +*&$! People will be anti Walmart and Love Walmart for years to come! The real issue is the one several people have wondered about, Wheres the common sense??? I made my first thoughts totally clear and detailed in my first comment, and I still feel the same!

  70. Samantha says:

LOL @ CHEAP!!!!!!!!!!! Just like the lady who sued Mc Donalds for the hot coffee!!!

  71. anti-walmart says:

true…it is kind of dumb to have these things close together or not reading the label.

however there is a larger point and yes walmart is at fault. other manufacturers purposefully change product packaging for different types of items. Walmart should do the same with the colors at least. one color for cleaning…one for food…automotive etc.

they don’t do this to save every fraction of a cent for profit. one product line, ie great value, one look, one color easier to produce on a large scale.

  72. Samantha says:

They would be in different Aisles, and we all know and are guilty of not putting things back where they were found, someone could have changed their mind on EITHER product and stashed it wherever they felt like! This doesnt excuse someone not using their EYES to read the label first!

  73. anti-walmart says:

tell me about the elderly lady to has poor vision. she goes to the food isle as usual…picks out her usual bottle of butter spray and begins to cook with it at home.

she eats her meal…her children in a few days find her dead at her home…the children find the butter spray on the counter next to the stove was actually a household chemical.

having the same product design on items such as food and chemical is just stupid.

this should be a wake up call, as what I described is a very real possibility.

anyone who says otherwise has their head in the sand! this has nothing to do in having one product down this isle and another down a different isle.

  74. Samantha says:

Thats not what I am saying! I am merely saying we have to stop putting blame on others before ourselves! So go on the band wagon then to ALL store chains carrying their OWN BRAND NAME, and you will see that they ALL HAVE ONE! Loblaws carries NO NAME, Foodland/Sobeys carries OUR COMPLIMENTS etc….. I understand that there are so many scenerios that could play out but in this circumstance? This person in my opinion made herself to look foolish! And yes, many ppl are too lazy to put items back and we dont realize it til we get home to Im sorry to say but it too is a valid point!

  75. sally says:

I dont think it was meant to be taken to heart so much Samantha. There are no kids in Boo’s house unless you count him as a kid lol! Also Boo’s a dude. 🙂

  76. anti-walmart says:

The title on this page is walmart…not foodland, not sobeys.

Again, walmart should change their packaging…it is potentially deadly.

You want to know what will cause them to change something like this?

    a lawsuit!

the only other word in the english language that they are afraid of aside from union.

I’ve been involved with the acre mainframe in bentonville…been to the tradeshows…been to the ‘motivational meetings’…the word that I have to say describes walmart is cult. walmart suits care nothing for the customer but only to dominate the world with their stores. Don’t believe me?

as i said above in another post…trust me.

  77. Natasha says:

I think you guys are taking this way too literally.

  78. anti-walmart says:

    just having fun…it’s the weekend.

but there is the point which is serious!

  79. Lisa says:

My mother, who was visually impaired btw, did this years ago, confusing a can of Plege with Pam. And no, we didn’t keep the products together in the same cupboard. I think I was dusting that day and left the can on the counter. We all sat down to supper, got a few bites in, making faces as we went, and finally I said ‘this tastes funny’, to which my mother- who was trying a new recipe and was quite sensitive to criticism on her culinary skills to begin with, basically told us all to shut up and eat it. A few tentative bites later, making sly faces at each other, then I got up to get salt or water or something and noticed the can of furniture polish on the counter. I put two and two together, came out and asked her if that’s what she used, and realizing what happened, well- we all still laugh about the day our mother tried to kill us. Good times, good times.

  80. frustrated says:

If you want variation in packaging then you will be paying higher costs..

  81. anti-walmart says:

frustrated…your right. why walmart won’t change.

Lisa…glad everyone is okay…proves my point.

Walmart Lobbies to Keep Factory Wages Under Two Cents
    http://www.pej.org/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=8470&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0

“Ever wonder how Walmart can afford to sell a pair of jeans for eight bucks? It’s because workers at the factory in Bangladesh where the jeans are made earn a measly one-and-a-half cents for each pair they sew. To make matters worse, Walmart has been lobbying against a government-supported wage increase, which would bump the workers up to 35 cents an hour. It’s time Walmart stopped exploiting the workers who make the clothes they sell.

The 2500 workers at the Anowara Apparels factory in Bangladesh spend all day sewing jeans, primarily for the Faded Glory brand of clothes sold at Walmart. They are 90% young women, some with families to support and others trying to simply scrape a living together. The women make between 11 and 17 cents an hour sewing jeans, and they’re expected to produce at least ten pairs an hour. That means they make less than two pennies for each pair of jeans they sew. Recognizing the gross underpayment of these workers, the Bangladeshi government has suggested raising the minimum wage to 35 cents an hour. Walmart has responded by lobbying against Bangladesh’s efforts to fairly compensate workers and decided to keep their staff living in abject poverty.
The employees of Anowara Apparels can’t afford even basic living expenses on their salary”

  84. Jasminebed says:

I agree that the packaging could be clearer.

But since this is Smart Canucks, and we all like to save a buck or too, I suggest you look into buying a Misto. Fill it with your favourite oil, pump, and you have a non-aerosol spray, and it works out much much cheaper. One of my favourite uses is for making filo pastry, you use so much less oil than by brushing on.

Misto is one of my favourite wedding shower gifts to give.

  85. anti-walmart says:

    alex…very interesting!

  86. Zeta says:

    that is Scarey!

  87. beachgurl says:

I could see how this could happen, put your glasses on…. before you start to cook with furniture polish……
Did the smell not tip you off, and why is anyone using a can of spray oil, it pure crap……………….and turns bad very quickly, and make everything taste like motor oil

  88. Zay says:

Could happen to anyone, good lesson to read everything boefore using.

  89. Brian says:

the spray butter will probably kill you eventually too

  90. Adina says:

I hear you. I once sprayed my 2 year old with stain remover thinking it was sun screen.. They were the exact same package, and even the same coloring…

  91. improperganda says:

I totally agree, Walmart really needs to do a better job. The tuna and the cat food look WAYYY too much alike. My mom almost ate cat food instead of the tuna! EWWW

  92. willowsprite says:

Gah…why would you buy either of those things anyway? Both are articial crap which poison our bodies and the environment. Not to mention the aerosol containers themselves are bad for the planet.
Use plain old unflavoured oil in a recyclable bottle to cook your pancakes, and a natural polish (mix equal parts white vinegar (or lemon juice) and olive oil) for your furniture. Most furniture these days dosen’t need polishing anyway.

  93. J says:

you should pay a high price and quality for you food that happens when you go cheap and not read directions .

  94. Pat says:

I never put any cleaners near kitchen area/covers. As a responsible parent, that’s at least I can do and be diligent on the products I give to my kids. READING labels always help.

I never bought those 2 items, but the picture seems bit fishy to me. Why one label has French and one doesn’t. Also, is the cooking spray bought in US? (spelling “flavor”). Perhaps someone else bought these products and knows them better.
These labels are not much different from those yellow “No-name” brands they sell at the Extra Foods.

For god’s sake, stop blaming others and take responsibility for yourself.

  95. Avery P says:

hahah yeah my food stuff goes nowhere near my cleaning products, but I make my own cleaners so that mistake would never ever happen here. Vinegar cleans just as well and is pretty much free compared to buying a pre made totally artificial usually more harmful to your children/animals than the dirt itself.

The only thing I can think is they just went shopping and still had the stuff in the bags, just pulled it out thinking it was the food spray. Other wise, who’s mistake is that really..lol

•Great Value 12 ounce Steamable Mixed Vegetables (UPC 78742 08026)

  97. Jason says:

First off how did you almost kill them since there are pictures? Second, stop buying CRAP from Walmart the company who is killing tons of acres of land to build more stores and gets 98% of their product from China. This doesn’t help the economy.
