Global Finance magazine named the World’s 50 safest banks this year. These banks were selected through a comparison of the long-term credit ratings and total assets of the 500 largest banks around the world. Ratings from Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s and Fitch were used.
Here’s how Canadian banks ranked:
10. Royal Bank of Canada
14. Toronto-Dominion Bank
23. Scotiabank
33. Bank of Montreal
43. CIBC
KfW Bank in Germany topped the list as the safest bank in the world. Surprisingly, very few Asian banks made it to the top 50 safest banks.

Td sucks here. Was better when it was just canada trust, but now the 2 merged. they don’t serve you, they serve themselves 🙁
TD’s alaways been like that. I never did like them. Glad to see that most of our bank are doing quite well. Ummm with my money lol.
I work for #10 WOOHOO!
Wow, 5 in the top 50 is great. I wonder how the States ranked?
Don’t have to worry, have no money to put in a bank…….
Helloooo people – this isn’t a list of the most customer friendly or banks with the lowest service charges – it’s a ranking of the world’s safest banks.
I wonder why CIBC ranked so low, Im assuming its including their branch off companies such as PC and Firstline YIKES!
So it’s like they look at how many accounts or identity being stolen and use or something? I want to know what are the things they look at.
Service wise, TD really sux. i switch after being long time customer. and they charge alot of service charge.
I for one love TD 100%, glad to be its customer
Every bank you’ll get praises and compliments
but this report + the Globe bank survey (ranks TD #1) is better than other banks at least
CIBC is absolutely the worst bank there is. Firstline mortgages is a joke in the customer service department. Their reps are rude, arrogant, and extremely misinformed by their own faulty technology. I mean, it’s 2009 and you still can’t even make a payment online through their website. Everything involves calling their “hotline” instead. Unfortunately, the people on the receiving end of the phone call don’t have a clue and say things that nobody in customer service should every be saying to customers.
agree with Jerry and Daniel. CIBC is aweful!.. They charge many fees and are super rude!.. I’ll never forget first getting my job (was only 17) and they wouldn’t give me an account because they didn’t have the time to open one (like 2 ppl in line and they weren’t closing for a good 40mins!)… that I would have to skip school (and her miss work) for me to open an account the next day! This man walking around acted very snootie and also said that basically my mother would have to do all my banking still and I’d have to ask permission/have signatures for basically everything… It’s MY $$ ! lol My mother looked at him and said told him that with that kind of servioe and attitude I didn’t want to bank there anyways and that she regreted being with them, and that we’d be going to TD. And we did!.. love it!
Good to see a majority of the Canadian banks on that list!
I’ve always been with TD despite their service charges and often-lower deposit interest rates because of the way they treat people, which in my experience has always been well. The line has never been long and the tellers/managers seem to know their stuff and have time for the customer, which makes me feel safe that my money will be looked after. I’ve been tempted by ING, PC, CT and the others because of the rates, but I just don’t feel as sure that I can get my money when I need it at any time, especially the ones that have little or no storefront presence.
The best bank is RBC! By far… I am with them for 4 years now and because I have Chequing and sav., visa & RRPS/TFSA, They do not charge me at all!!
Online banking is very easy.
You should try it!!
You are all out to lunch! Canadian banks are as big as crooks as the american banks. RBC is being investigated by the SEC for causing Credit problems. ALSO no one apparently knows that CANADIAN BANKS have the power to write there own money. RBC just posted a 1.13 Billion dollar loss, after
buying 441 Raleigh (USA – BANK BRANCHES), which means Canadian taxpayers are now paying for these 441 branches to operate, as RBC will make a tax claim on the 1.13 Billion dollar loss. MAKE sense? READ it again slower. lol
Well, I worked for CIBC for over 10 yrs, and left them to go to the number 10 bank in Canada. And I was with them for around 3 yrs, and now I am changing careers. Why?? Because I felt as though I worked for the PPA (Philadelphia Parking Authority from the TV show Parking Wars) because everyone calls them crooks. It’s a business, just like McDonald’s, Westjet, the Bay, etc…….every business is in it to make a profit, that’s how this world works. They paid my monthly mortgage payments, put food on my table, heated my house, etc. So thanks to people like Shawn, who dis the banks any chance they get. I would be very curious to see who he works for.
Cheers…….your one of the reasons I quit my job!!!
