Topshop Comes To Toronto, Canada!

(Minus the neon sign in the background, you’d think that you step foot inside H&M!)

Starting this Fall, The Bay’s flagship store on Queen Street will be carrying Topshop/Topman. Not sure about the specifics, quantity, price points, etc., but I hope that they’ll give it more of a fighting chance than poor Material Girl. 🙁

When I heard this on the news yesterday, I was uber-excited. However, my excitement has since waned mainly due to how Material Girl was turned out and that fact that it’s…The Bay.

(You know how I feel about buying clothes at department stores!)

The second culprit to my quashed excitement is the question of WHO. Namely, who will determine/edit the line that’ll eventually make it onto the racks??!! Obviously The Bay has a ve$ted interest in hosting Topshop/Topman in-house, hence no stand-alone store, which means limited space, so not everything will make it ‘across the pond’. So who’ll be the buyer, some style-challenged individual who’d be a perfect candidate for Style By Jury? <– I *love* this show, btw.

Although I welcome another player on our field of stale fashions, I am a bit skeptical about the results. I guess it’ll be a case of wait ‘n see.

Click here to read the news story, courtesy of CTV British Columbia. Btw, I completely disagree with the author’s quote that Topshop is “cheap-chic”. I just visited their women’s tops section and a sleeveless blouse is 38GBP = just under $60CAD which I wouldn’t consider “cheap”.

Topshop has already been in Toronto for awhile with a small curated selection at the Jonathan and Olivia boutique on Ossington. http://jonathanandolivia.com/TOPSHOP/ I’ve checked it out before, it’s definitely not cheap price-wise!

  2. yes says:

“JONATHAN+OLIVIA IS THE EXCLUSIVE RETAILER FOR TOPSHOP AND TOPMAN IN CANADA”

Could be the reason for the high prices at J+O.

From my experience in online shopping, everything just costs more in Europe. Bike parts for example were priced almost equally in CAD and GBP on separate sites, but once GBP was converted it was obviously much higher. So I wouldn’t expect the Bay to convert it directly.

I grew up in the UK and with Top Shop…they used to be a bargain basement fashion store back in the early 80’s….very cheap and cheerful…. 20 pounds would buy me quite a few bits and pieces!

  4. honeydoo says:

yessssss… pain in the but to go to toronto though. parking and traffic, no thanks. hope it comes closer eventually.

topshop is considered kinda ‘cheap'(decently priced) in the UK… here it’d be more like urban outfitters range, i’d imagine.

  5. Moom says:

Yay! The armpit of UK fashion retailing makes it to Canada. 😉

  6. Batfinkw says:

Why is Stephania so anti-Bay?! I for one like the Material Girl displays and advetisements. And you should realise that those clothes are probably too young for you anyways. Don’t blame the Bay for that!

The Bay is great, they always have top brands and exclusive designers that otherwise would not be in Canada! Stop ragging on the Bay!

  7. KittyKat says:

Stephania is the worst contributing “blogger” on this site. I wish Boo would get some more positive contributers. I havent forgotten her ill-written “fashion update” about kitten heels and fat girls.

The Bay is great — whats wrong with Department Store clothes?!

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Stephania. Take your hate elsewhere.

I have to say “Kudos” to Batfinkw for being such an avid supporter of The Bay. One of the things that most people don’t realize is that it is the only major department store we have left in Canada and supporting it will keep it here for a very long time. If you closely look at where The Bay is going it is obvious that it is giving everyone options to be fashionable despite your income bracket and size. It is introducing lower price points such as Material Girl and high end such as Hugo Boss. Looking good does not have to cost a fortune anymore. Also, I have to mention the new fashion options for the plus size woman such as the Jennie Beker line Edit and Jessica Simpson. The Topshop brand will be a stand alone store within The Bay so that you will get a close experience to the stores in the UK. The most exciting thing is The Bay isn’t even close to being finished yet with the introduction of even more new brands (cosmetic, footwear, home fashions, apparel etc) so sit tight as the shopping experience is going to be even more exciting.

Bat, if you read the post, I was comparing The Bay Vs. Macy’s set-up of Material Girl. The Bay has absolutely nothing on how Macy’s was set-up. Waaay more merchandise, better displayed.

Also, The Bay’s price points of MG aren’t simply the CAD equivalent to Macy’s. The Bay took the rights to Material Girl and jacked up the prices!

  10. Sally says:

KittyKat, how can you tell someone to take their hate elsewhere when you are being even potentially more hateful?

  11. Katey says:

The UK isn’t cheap for clothing – that’s pretty average for a high street chain over there and I suspect their prices here will be the same or more plus tax due to importation and all that, but I still consider it a lot for clothing that’s no better made than H&M, especially in a climate like the US or Canada where clothing is generally cheaper. It will however, be more trendy I imagine. Top Shop only really makes current trend wear. Plus most of their clothing is on the small side, so if you need slightly larger sizes (say a US 14/16 or over), it won’t be any use. I grew up in the UK as well and TS are a common high street store, no more no less. But it’ll be another option for people, so what’s not to like there?

  12. ealewis says:

Stephania, you are correct, Material Girl is indeed cheaper in Macy’s even with the dollar conversion. The reason is that Macy’s could buy it at a cheaper price due to the higher volume (they have 800 stores and The Bay only has 82 stores)

  13. KittyKat says:

Sorry Sally, I just can’t forgive this bloggers’ ignorance with the “fat girls and kitten heels” comments. I have noticed that post has been deleted with no apology for the insensitivity of the comments. Many were offended. I love smartcanucks and IMO think that SC can do much better then Stephania.

  14. KittyKat says:

FOLLOW UP: Even if you click on Stephania’s name and go to her blog, one of her posts is of a heavy woman in yoga pants, and what do ya know, she has a clever little comment on it! Further down she comments that Karl L hates “fatties”….. Sally and Boo — is this the “quality” of contributors you strive for on your site? I think not.

  15. fedup says:

So funny how people doesn’t think “too skinny” or “skinnies” is offensive..but when someone said “fatties”, people flip…
Talking about insensitivity and professonalism, i believe you should contact Boo or Sally via private message / email for any complaints or concerns…attacking the blogger in this public forum is unethical…I agree with Sally…if you yourself is not a sensetive person, don’t tell other people about sensitivity… Look at yourself in the mirror prior to lecturing others. I’m not backing up the blogger…I agree she should be more sensitive about her blog and avoid any hate / negativitiy in her blog. But Attacking her in public is uncalled for.

  16. Shirley says:

I think they mean cheap because it’s comparable in style to high end designers. Try finding a $60 Alexander Wang blouse…

  17. Stephania says:

I would leave Alexander Wang’s name outta a Topshop discussion! Unless of course, they carried a blatant knock-off.

In any event, the quality would be comparable to Forever 21/H&M, just slightly better styles. We’ll see…

  18. Eljayese says:

HIP HIP HORRAY FOR TOPSHOP AND THE BAY!

The union of two wonderful retailers, sigh, retail bliss. I will say, as much as topshop isn’t cheap they are good quality. Everything i’ve bought in their stores over the years has faired wonderfully, unlike H&M products which always fit terribly and deteriorate rapidly.

The plus side to the Bay carrying Topshop products is that they have more buying power than a satelite retailer like Jonathan and Olivia, which means when things do go on sale the sales are better!
