Value Village is having a 50% off sale November 15th.  Included in this sale: Clothing, shoes, accessories, bed, bath. *Sale excludes new red tagged items. Offer valid from 7am until close at 9pm November 15th.

Click here for more details and to find a store in your area.  Has anyone gone to the 50% off sale before?  I haven’t even been in a Value Village before so I can’t help out with my opinion of the sale.  The nearest one to me is over an hours drive.

I have never been but I know my sister used to go to the sales years and years ago… Everything is 50% off, doesn’t matter what it is… get there early as stock will get picked over. And if it is anything like my VV it will get really messy.

I don’t like VV anymore, strictly because they are WAY over priced, I like to stick to the MCC thrift store, as the items are actually affordable, and always in prime condition. They too do 50% days, $5 basket days you name it… I went to VV for Mason Jars back in the spring, they were asking $1 a piece, which is more then you would pay brand new…. MCC had them on for $0.10… goes to show you need to shop around for you thrift goods also.

I love value village!! there’s one literally a block from where i live, so that helps. I’ve gone to the 50% as often as they come and always leave with a few pieces of clothing. I agree with keri that their prices have gone up, though it varies depending on the location you go to. I also would not recommend them as the best thrift shop for housewares, although my experience is that they carry more variety and overall, more items than mcc or other thrift shops. but yes, do your research.

i recommend sticking to the clothing. even with the higher prices, i’ve found lots of great brands at bargain prices. almost all my pants are from value village (mavi, dish, gap, mexx, even guess), usually between $7-20 regular price. tops are usually cheaper, depending on the brand, $5-12. you do need patience, ESPECIALLY on 50% off days.

tips on 50% off shopping days:
    1. go as early as you can! – you want to avoid the mad crowd and long line-ups at the change rooms as much as possible, trust me! (i know this sounds a bit crazy and perhaps unfair, but i try to go the night before to “pre-select” what i want and put the clothes somewhere on the rack where i can remember to get it in the morning – the salespeople almost never rearrange the clothes during the night.)
    2. wear comfortable clothes and even clothes that you can try things over top of. (the change room line-ups are so long sometimes, you’ll be grateful for the option)
    3. and just a tip for those of you who don’t frequent thrift shops: be prepared to find nothing or to find tons. thrift store shopping is a hit or miss type of experience that does require patience, as i’ve mentioned above, and perseverance. oh, and also an open mind as to what you’ll find.

one last note to keep in mind: value village’s return policy has changed from previous years. you can now only exchange items, and it must be within 7 days (although i’ve been able to request them to extend this deadline – i just talked to the cashier before the 7 days were up. i’ve also just exchanged the items for other items equaling the same amount, and then returned the following week to exchange those new items, and on and on until i’ve found something i really like and want to keep. it is tedious and annoying, but you do what you gotta do, y’know?)

The 50% off used to be for everything but now that housewares aren’t included I don’t bother going anymore. Sure you might find one or two clothing items but is it worth the line ups and hassle? I think this is the only time it brings the price down to what’s reasonable. You’ll pay almost as much for a old used item (that was donated to them for free) as you would for that same item brand new if you wait for a sale at stores like Giant Tiger and Old Navy. They have lots of stuff that’s priced the same as or even more than new. I think they exploit poor people who don’t know any better.

wow thanks for posting the great tips!

Value Village is a rip off since they continue to raise their prices. You are buying used items everyone so why pay new prices. They are a FOR PROFIT organization and making a killing. I’m so sick of these corporations who are taking advantage of us. I agree with a previous comment that they are exploiting poor people. I would rather contribute to and also shop at Goodwill or Salvation Army since they are continually giving back within your community. Another option is Freecyle (free stuff) and Kijiji for items that are used but in great shape.

I like the Value Village 50% off sales for buying my kids’ clothing. Last time I went early and shopped in the kids jeans to buy my son and daughter each about 4 pairs of pants. That was easy and fun and worth it. The teller lines can be long though. Best to go as early as you can.

I agree that Value Village is not as good as it used to be. I too have found items there that were as expensive or even more expensive then what you would buy brand new in the store. However, I do still go their 50% off sales as usually most of their stuff is a great deal then. Almost all of my children’s clothing has come from there and it is very inexpensive on 50% off day. Plus it is more accessible for me then Goodwill or Salvation Army.

I hate that its not on toys/books/house ware anymore. We dont have a lot of money and the kids are still young enough that we try to get a lot of toys for christmas from there on 50% off day.

  9. jess says:

they wouldnt stamp the ”green card” on the sale day just because people r buying alot today. it was only for the 30% off next purchase..prices are off… so high!!! worn used jackets for 40 bucks? . also jewelry is not included in the sale which is weird since it consider ”accessories’ and not houseware nor furniture that they excluded..seems like they are very greedy…

  10. I have worked at Value Village and know how the system works. The Canadian Diabetes Society in our area get a percentage of EVERYTHING that comes into that store. Sure, their prices have gone up, but where can yhou get a pair of jeans by Gloria Vanderbilt, hardly worn, for under $20.00?
I loved working there and I love to shop there. As one poster said, you have to have patience, be open to what you would like and be prepared to spend time. I also like the fact that every day is a different day as around one thousand pieces of merchandise is put out daily.

  11. Brampton Shopper says:

You are better off going to Giant Tiger. They have a reduced section where you can get items for $2, $3 & $5 all brand new items. Also Talize is a better option-lower prices, better return policy, clean stores, friendly staff and they also offer a student & senior discount.

  12. VV employee says:

I work at VV and its silly people like this that grinds my gears. We do not get these things for “free”, we pay a non profit organizations for them..wether it be bags of garbage ( which yes, people do that), good stuff or filthy worn out bedding that we have to throw out ( and look, another cost we have to PAY for, garbage disposal?!) EVERYTHING is weighed and paid for before it is looked through…sure mistakes happen and things get overpriced but a brand new lulu lemon hoodie for 19.99!? A set of corelle dishes for 14? No….that’s a pretty good deal. If you don’t like it, don’t shop there….just don’t come in and complain about it to an employee who’s trying to do what their told and earn money…take it up with head office
