Vancouver 2010 Olympics Coming to an End, what was your favourite moment?

Men’s hockey just won Gold in 3-2 overtime! That brings our medal total to 26. With 14 Gold’s, 7 Silver and 5 Bronze. We came third behind the US and Germany in medal ranking, but we did have the most Gold medals. This was the most Gold medals by any host country ever.

What was your favourite moment of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games? Perhaps it was when Alex Bilodeau won the first gold medal, Joannie Rochette winning that bronze medal for her mother, Jasey Jay Anderson winning the men’s snowboard parallel giant slalom gold medal, Jon Montgomery wining gold for men’s skeleton, Christine Nesbitt winning gold in women’s speed skating, Charles Hamelin winning gold in men’s short track speed skating etc etc etc. Maybe it was the opening game ceremonies, or just the overall “I believe” spirit that was evident in many of the competitions.

I am kind of sad to see the Olympic games end, I have watched more of these ones then any other olympic games, perhaps that they were in Canada, I just felt more connected to it. I can’t imagine being in BC at the time and seeing all the crowds of red mitts in the streets, it must have been an awesome experience for some of us. I thought Jon Montgomery’s win was one of the highlights, he was just soo ecstatic when he won, it was fun to watch.

Well, my personal favourite was my hubby carrying the torch. But of the *actual* Olympics, I think the game that just ended. A hard fought battle right to the end!

favorite moment was the Americans’ faces about half an hour ago

  4. BookMom says:

My favourite moment was being able to open the door into the curling arena for my DS on his birthday and say to him, “Welcome to the Olympics!” and watch his face light up. (I was able to get affordable tickets for us for the first women’s curling event about a year and a half ago.)

Yes, yes and yes!! What an amazing couple of weeks. I have never been so “into” the Olympics until these games. I am sooo proud to be Canadian. Not just about all the medals but to see the flag going up, the people singing the anthem and over all, the amazing job Vancouver did with the hosting. I am writing from Ontario so maybe I didn’t hear all the nitty-gritty of things going wrong but, from an observer, it all looked flawless and that is what the rest of the world saw too.

Now – let’s “Own the Podium” for the summer games too!

Alex Bilodeau won the first gold medal…. and his relationship with his special needs brother… can you tell I have a special needs child.

  11. Sally says:

Only thing I really did not like was the “own the podium program”

I am so proud to be Canadian, what an amazing 2 weeks for us!

Each and every medal was amazing to watch, but seeing Canada take Gold in Men’s and Women’s Hockey was just the most thing! We showed the world we’re number one in our sport!

Way to go Canada and to all the athletes an the people that made us so proud to be Canadians!!!

  13. pateyface says:

My favourite moment was watching the men’s team win Gold! Woo hoo!!

  14. Sally says:

Tonight I actually had my little guy in emerg because hes really sickies and all the dr’s and nurses were sitting in the waiting room watching a little 13” tv cheering. It was def a lot of spirit.

  15. denise says:

    Men’s Hockye Gold & Women’s Hockey Gold!
    Woo hoo! Go Canada!!!

  16. greenbear says:

It has been a magical 2 weeks for sure. I am sorry to see it come to an end. So many touching moments, it is hard to pick a favourite… but, being from Halifax, I’ll have to give it to Sidney for the perfect ending to a great olympic games.

PS I do’;t like “Own the Podium” either…sounds too American

  17. dawn_sweety says:

Definitely that we won gold in both men’s and women’s hockey and that I had a friend who was part of the opening ceremonies. The 2010 olympics were amazing, I was never really too into them before but there was just so much more excitement this time around then any other’s (out of the very few) that I remember in my life

  18. The_Scarecrow says:

Watching Maelle Ricker, Lindsey Vonn, Kallie Humphries, Eve Muirhead, Susan O’Connor, Shannon Remple and more Maelle Ricker….. Be still, my beating heart.

  19. couponmom says:

The Olympics gave us feelings of inspiration, hope, laughter and tears. But it was not a moment for me but a pride for our country as we all sang, “Oh CANADA we stand on guard for thee,” so many times! Continue to love your country next week, next month, next year, and so on SC’ers.

  20. greenbear says:

    very well said couponmom

    hockey gold!!

  22. Carlyfalls says:

As a BIG hockey fan, the gold medal game that had me on the edge of the seat the entire time, was by far my favorite part. Then the win was amazing, but I was a little sad for Kesler (I am a Canucks fan most of the time afterall) as he had a great game, and looked so defeated. I know how I would have felt if Canada lost, so I might have been the only one, but I had some sympathy for him.

Another favorite moment, was watching john montgomery guzzle a pitcher of beer on his way to accept his medal, and then doing auction speak 😉

  23. drew says:

So many! Wow! #1 Joannie Rochette – Ambassador to the culture of ‘In the face of huge adversity, we are going to do it anyway’ which is truly Canadian. Joannie could of got the last place and still won the Vancouver 2010 Terry Fox award for her strength of character. #2 Winning the all time most Golds ever and as host nation! Wow again! If weighted, Perfect 10 points for Golds, 5 points for middle place Silvers, and One point for being on the podium Bronzes, Canada placed 1st at 180 points, USA 2nd at 178 points and Germany 3rd at 172 points. Wow! Talk about ‘own the podium’, with only one tenth of the population of the next best contender. Way to go Canadian Athletes. You represent what Canada is, a world leader. #3 The two hockey Golds. Human beings, men and women, team works finest hours. The world needs lots of that. #4 The honour of witnessing this demonstration of Canadian/World hospitality. Cheers to those who made this possible. #5 Watching young athletes handle the ups and downs with tremendous grace under pressure. My father always said “it’s not only about who is first or second, it’s about learning. If you are learning, you are winning.” It looks like there is a lot of winning going on. I like that!

  24. Joyce says:

I had two most memorable moments. 1)When Joannie Rochette won the bronze medal and 2)when men’s hockey won GOLD!!!

  25. haneylaw says:

Absolutely Alex Bilodeau, for him to be the first with an amazing story was very touchingly Canadian. Other than that, like OperaBob said, BEING HERE! this was the most amazing way to see our city come together and throw the most amazing party ever.

Runners up for entertainment, womens bobsleigh (x2!) and Jon Montgomery for showing the world that we like to have a little fun 🙂

  26. natalka says:

Fave moment I suppose was the first gold by Bilodeau – then the curling finals! Loved watching the ice dancing!
What I am HAPPIEST about is that the current generation of kids to 20somethings+ realizing how wonderful Canada Is and what being patriotic and having spirit is really all about! Canada Is a country full of love!

  27. JeLLo2775 says:

I cannot segregate one particular moment of the olympics that I found to be the most memorable for me..

    I agree with Couponmom – I am proud to be a Canadian….

Anyone else shed tears during and after the closing ceremonies?

I did, I friggin’ bawled until I fell asleep 🙁

  28. jaqkev says:

I actually loved watching the speed skating. Especially the mens team pursuit. I also loved watching Jon Montgomery celebrating after his medal 🙂

  29. Louise W says:

I’m originally from great britain so seeing them win the first winter games gold in 30 years was pretty cool. I also thought watching marianne st gelais cheering on charles hamelin and virtue and moir singing on the podium were priceless. Loved the whole thing

  30. sonia says:

i live in vancouver, and so my favourite thing was being on the streets of robson in the evenings…especially after a canada hockey win! it was just an amazing experience! so many people all celebrating together in the streets. some breaking into the ‘o canada’ song, some playing hockey, everyone high-fiving each other. the ambience was incredible; the mood exhilerating. i’ve never seen anything like it before, and i’ll probably never see anything like that again. i miss you already olympics!

    GO CANADA!!!!!!!!

  31. ukonjacki says:

I am both American and Canadian and it was awesome to watch The USA and Canada men’s hockey games. Incredible games!!

  32. Audrey T says:

Wow, it’d have to be the party with the crowds after Crosby’s win. I was in Robson Square and it was PACKED. God, it was such a well-played hockey game, the energy and the high was amazing.

  33. Lily says:

I mean I always enjoy the olympics, but to be honest I’ve only ever watched two. (Beijing + Vancouver)

I watched a lot of the Vancouver ones, probably because I’m Canadian,
But a lot of them were memorable.

Especially when they did a re-cap of all the “golden” moments, I felt like tearing up.

Men’s Hockey for sure. Last day, close game, intense, hockey’s pretty much a Canadian sport, SIDNEY CROSBY!!

Charles Hamelin’s gold, that was awesome.

    Alex Bilodeau

    and Joannie !
