What to Expect From Apple in 2018: HomePod, New Large iPhone Xs, iPad Pro, Apple Watch 4 & More

Apple Canada made 2017 quite a landmark year. With the release of three new iPhones, an all new Apple Watch plus a number of other smaller releases – that probably didn’t garner as much attention in light of the products just mentioned – it would be difficult for 2018 to top the previous year. However, we’re already hearing rumours of some product releases that could very well dethrone 2017 for being one of Apple’s biggest years.

Here, we break down what some experts suspect might be some of Apple’s biggest releases for 2018:

HomePod – Early 2018 ($349 USD)

The HomePod is the first wi-fi connected smart speaker from Apple – think along the lines of competitor brands like the Amazon Echo or the Google Home. You can expect to have this fine piece of smart technology in your homes by early 2018, or so that’s what Apple says. Originally it was supposed to come out on the market for Christmas, but has since been delayed to an unspecified date in 2017.

The device is apparently going to retail for $349 USD, which in Canada should translate to be about $433 by today’s exchange rate.

Three New iPhones – September 2018 ($805-$929)

There are apparently going to be three new updates to the Apple iPhones that were introduced in 2017; including the iPhone X, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus.

The followup to the iPhone X will have the same OLED display, but some rumours suggest that there will be both a 5.8-inch option and a 6.5-inch option.

In addition to these to OLED phones, there are suggestions that Apple is going to release a 6.1-inch iPhone with LCD display. This smartphone is said to be more affordable than the already mentioned models.

iPad Pro – September 2018 (unknown price)

The iPad Pro, set to be released in September 2018 (allegedly), is said to feature some of the add-ons that made the iPhone X so popular, more specifically the face ID technology.

It apparently will also not include a home button and will include slimmer details like the iPhone X.

There has been no confirmation about the size of this higher-end iPad, but the company is likely to stick with their standard iPad dimensions of 10.5-inch options.

Apple Watch Series 4 – September 2018 (unknown price)

There is a very high probability that we will see the fourth-generation of the Apple Watch in 2018, considering the company has been updating the model annually since its original release.

Some of the changes anticipated to come with the fourth-generation is a redesign of the watch, particularly considering that it hasn’t changed since its initial release.

Other rumours indicate that Apple might be harnessing the use of micro-LED displays for the new Watch. And on the robes of tech companies wanting to expand into using their apps to gather technology for medical research, it would not be surprising either to see the new Apple Watch featured new sensors for testing a person’s EKG.

The new sensors might also include testing blood glucose levels – through non-invasive measures – but it has yet to be confirmed if this will be part of the 2018 release.

iMac and iMac Pro – Mid-to-Late 2018

Without fail, we’re likely to see updates to both the iMac and the iMac Pro, as there is typically an annual update for the former of these models. The 21.5 and the 27-inch machines are likely to receive the update to 8th-generation Coffee Lake chips, which – as Intel has said – should make the machines up to 32% faster than before.

Whether or not these machines will receive design makeovers is still to be determined, but stay tuned to this site and we’ll be sure to have updates once they are released to the general public.

New Software – June Preview, September Release

At this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, which takes place each June, we should anticipate a preview of the new software for iOS devices, Macs, Apple TV and the Apple Watch, as this is typically when the software is sampled.

After the conference, the general public can expect to receive beta versions and public beta testers before the big release in September.

Bloomberg is saying that Apple is working on creating a universal app solution that would sync apps across iPhone, iPad, and Macs. This would be really big news for developers, as currently they have to create an app for iPads, iPhones, Mac, the Apple Watch and the Apple TV if they want it to be used on all devices.

More information about the update is likely to begin surfacing in the week’s leading up to the conference.

Other releases and rumours:

Some of the other products that are rumoured to receive an update/get released in 2018 include:

  • Apple TV shows
  • Mac mini
  • Mac Pro and display
  • new iPhone SE
  • possible new Macbook update
  • Macbook Pro update (June)
  • next-generation AirPods
  • AirPower Charging Mat

DEAR TEAM MEMBERS:

It is with great regret that Ron Joyce Jr. Enterprises (Tim Hortons) finds it necessary to make the following changes to our incentive programs, paid breaks, and policies.

These changes are due to the increase of wages to $14.00 minimum wage on January 1, 2018, then $15.00 per hour on January 1, 2019, as well as the lack of assistance and financial help from our Head Office and from the Government. The decisions of the following are the results of intense discussions with management and numerous small business owners in our area and other franchise owners.

Breaks will no longer be paid. A 9 hour shift will be paid for 8 hours and 20 minutes: 8 hour shift will be paid for 7 hours and 30 minutes: 7 hour shift will be paid for 6 hours and 30 minutes: 6 hour shift will be paid for 5 hours and 30 minutes: 5 hour shift will be paid fir 4 hours and 45 minutes: 4 hour shift will nee paid for 3 hours and 45 minutes: 3 hour shift will be paid for 2 hours and 45 minutes.

The incentives of working on your birthday and the day off with pay after six months of not calling in are cancelled.

The incentives of receiving bonus’ for covering shifts when called on days off and a day of pay for death in immediate family will continue.

Dental and Health Benefits will continue, but members will be required to cover the cost of the benefits by the following.

Over 5 years of employment will pay 50% of the cost of their benefits.

Employees with 6 months up to 5 years will pay 75% of their benefits cost.

Any employee may cancel their benefits if they wish. Please let us know as soon as possible.

We apologize for these changes. Once the costs of the future are better known we may bring back some or all of the benefits we have had to remove. All the above will become effective January 1, 2018.

Apple Apologizes Over Slowing Down Products & Offers Reduced Battery Prices

Apple Canada has issued an official apology to their customers after officially admitting to have intentionally slowed down some of their older models of iPhones and in exchange for their apology they are also offering customers a reduced fee of out-of-warranty battery replacements for all affected models.

The statement that Apple issued offered more details about an ongoing issue which has seen the company admit to having implemented measures that made the update from iOS 10.2.1 hinder the performance of iPhone models like SE, 6, 6Plus, 6s and 6s Plus.

Apple continued in their statement that they would never “intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades.”

Currently, the company is contesting a power management feature that was originally introduced in the iOS 10.2.1, which came out with the iPhone 6 and 6s. The power management feature was part of an initiative to reduce the number of unexpected shutdowns that were the result of high power draws.

However, despite these claims, Apple has been on the receiving end of a number of lawsuits that claim that the company intentionally messed around with customers products to purposefully slow down older iPhone models.

In their supporting document, Apple claims that:

A chemically aged battery also becomes less capable of delivering peak energy loads, especially in a low state of charge, which may result in a device unexpectedly shutting itself down in some situations.

The power management features that Apple is discussing are ones that will be added to newer models of iPhones, regardless of their model.

Issues of slower speeds began to surface this past fall when Apple claims they began receiving reports from customers that they were witnessing slower speeds in their Apple products. The company says that initially they believed this was in part to blame for the software updates involved with the products, plus there were some minor unaddressed bugs in iOS 11, however they now believe it may be the result of chemical aging of the batteries.

To relieve the possible woes of customers, Apple has said they will make several changes, including a price for out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacements, which is being dropped from $79 to $29. This change will last from late January through to December 2018.

Apple also plans to provide additional feedback on the price drop in the future, but they say it will apply to anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery requires replacing.

In addition to the reduced battery price, Apple has made the additional move to become more transparent by providing an iOS update that will include new features that give users more visibility into the health of their iPhone’s battery. This way, they say, customers will be able to clearly see whether the state of the battery is affecting performance.

We will continue to provide coverage of this topic as thing develop in the future.
