Enter to Win an Autographed copy of “The Crickets Orchestra” Cd by a Canadian Musician Meaghan Smith and a limited edition print drawn by Meaghan herself!

meaghan_smith

Last week I wrote about the wonderful concert I attended at Centennial hall where I learned of an awesome Canadian artist Meaghan Smith. Meaghan Smiths Cd was released today “The Crickets Orchestra.” To celebrate I have been contacted  and have the opportunity to offer the great readers of Smart Canucks a chance to win an Autographed Cd of The Crickets Orchestra, along with a limited edition print drawn by Meaghan Smith herself! Also second and third place will be sent a copy of the Cd! How great is that!

Before we get into the contest rules and information heres a bit of info about Meaghan Smith:

Meaghan Smith was born to be a singer. She just didn’t always know it. Meaghan studied animation in pursuit of her drawing (she is also a talented artist), but she just couldn’t get the music out of her system. While in college, she performed secret concerts in front of friends in stairwells and eventually overcame a serious case of stage fright. Soon, she was performing local shows in her adopted home of Halifax where she caught the eye of Warner Music Canada, and ultimately Sire Records in the U.S.

The Cricket’s Orchestra, set for release Today February 9th, cannot be classified into a one genre-specific category. It is neither Pop, Jazz, Folk, or Adult Contemporary. It is all of those. The music is timeless and infectious. At certain moments, it conjures up images of Billie Holiday, and at others, Diana Krall or Norah Jones. When you think you’ve figured it all out, you are thrown a curveball when respected Montréal D.J., Kid Koala scratches a retro groove (on A Little Love). Over the course of the past year, Meaghan has toured with the likes of k.d. lang, Sarah McLaughlin, Ron Sexsmith, Joe Purdy, and most recently Chantal Kreviazuk. Expect more touring plans for early 2010 to be announced shortly.

“I am greatly moved by the music of the ’20s, ’30s, and ’40s – times when things were pure and simple – so I wanted my music to recall those eras, but I wanted to put my own spin on it.”

Canadian music rocks!! We sure have come a long way since Anne Murray!

  8. Julie Leeds says:

Hey, Anne Murray was fine in her day….and there has been quite a bit of Canadian Music around, its just the the U.S. record labels scoop them up quickly. I can’t blame the performers for going big. Canada on its own can’t fully support a music/drama/Entertainment industry to the potential that the U.S. market offers.

Canada definitely has the talent, we just don’t have a large population.

  9. macica says:

I’m all for supporting our home grown talent. Hoping Meaghan will have a successful career and make Canada proud.

  10. Andie says:

Canadian Artists are great! Love supporting them 😀

  69. Alex says:

Canadian music feels so much more “real” to me. Less “manufactured” than US music. I’m not saying this applies to all Canadian music (or US music for that matter). But when I hear artists like Hawksley Workman, Serena Ryder and of course Meaghan Smith – I almost feel connected, because it sounds so real. In contrast, when I listen to some US music, like the princess of Pop, Britney, I don’t feel that connection, because it just doesn’t feel as real (still love Britney though… just not as much as Hawksley’s music!)

  70. rhubarb says:

    I love all 3 of them 😉

  77. Nicole says:

I saw her at the London Chantal concert and she was wonderful! I thought her and her husband duo was such a great story – taking the chance – financially she mentioned – for her to leave her first career and take a chance on a musical career- certainly paid off!

  78. Jennie says:

I love her dress and style 🙂

I love Canadian music. They pick a lot of influences to create something all their own, usually keeping their heritage at heart. There are certain singers I really don’t like, Celiene Dion, Avril Lavigne, Shinaia Twain, but they sell records, so good for them. Also they bring more attention to our Canadian music scene.
