Apple iPhone 4 in Canada: Will you be buying one? And why doesn’t Canada get it in June?!

iPhone 4 Canada

As some of you guys probably already know, iPhone 4 has been announced today and will be launched on June 24 in 5 countries: US, France, Germany, UK and Japan. Canada gets it a month later in July with 18 other countries. I really don’t understand how three European countries and Japan get the iPhone on launch day and Canada which is closer to the US  doesn’t! I’m guessing it’s probably because of our unreliable wireless provider Rogers that might need more time to prepare or something.

In the US iPhone 4 will retail at $199 for the 16GB model and $299 FOR THE 32GB one. That’s of course with a 3 year 2 year contract.

Once the iPhone 4 makes it to Canada will you be buying one?

  1. Mush says:

It’s 2 year contracts in the US.

  2. Boo Radley says:

    Thanks Mush! Corrected 😀

  3. Jackie says:

No way Jose. I don’t fall for the hype 😉

  4. PPK says:

Probably not, but on a technical POV, the spec on the iPhone 4 is simply awesome, especially the screen and the Petaband (5 bands).

I am someone who embraces flexibility and freedom, while Apple keep saying their stuff are open-ended, I find that it’s the company themselves that are close-ended because we all know that you can’t do much on an iPhone without paying Apple for different SW/HW.

I am shifting to Android OS on my next phone.

  5. radio says:

Each country has their own standards and regulations, be happy that Canada is more strict than America.

  6. honeydoo says:

i’m about to get a 3GS one. good enough.. what extras does this have?

  7. Boo Radley says:

honeydoo, 3GS prices will drop… I’d wait till July if you can.

  8. Boo Radley says:

Here are some of iPhone 4’s features:

  9. trendless says:

Bell/Telus also carry the iPhone, don’t forget; My guess on the delay is either more regulation hoops that have to be jumped through like radio says, or perhaps too small a market to be important enough to launch early. Maybe b/c we’ve been so patient in the past Apple figures we’re easy to ignore 😉

  10. amycanada77 says:

oh gosh … not another new one … the hubby will be running off to the nearest telus dealership … yet again

  11. Kerri Rae says:

“Each country has their own standards and regulations, be happy that Canada is more strict than America.”

It is released in the US first because of APPLE, no because it needs to be approved for use. Apple ALWAYS releases things in the US before internationally.

  12. Kerri Rae says:

And no, I’m not interested, I have the iPhone 3GS and can’t wait to switch over to an android.

  13. Erica says:

hell no. Blackberry all the way!
    iphone is way to expensive

  14. Iain says:

“I really don’t understand how three European countries and Japan get the iPhone on launch day and Canada which is closer to the US”

    Wrong.

“Each country has their own standards and regulations, be happy that Canada is more strict than America.”

    Wrong.

Canada’s trivial because it’s a small market share. Those “three European countries” and Japan, in particular, are not.

  15. Iain says:

“Each country has their own standards and regulations, be happy that Canada is more strict than America.”

And pardon me, Radio, as I’ve no idea what you’re happy about. Strictness? Will you be *happy* if you happen to live in a city with curfew?

  16. Iain says:

And speaking of the Federal government’s impotent *regulations*…

  17. Eric says:

I’d liek to get it for the HD video camera portion alone. Aside from the contract, it’s cheaper than most video cameras out now.. and i could really use one.

The downside: I have absolutely NO NEED for a cell phone. Telemarketers can’t believe it when I say that. Hey, the only people I speak to are my wife and our families – who don’t live in the city. We don’t travel since I don’t own a car, and if I REALLY need to call home while I’m out, I’m always near a payphone.

  18. kof says:

    nope.
It has almost the same specs as the 3GS.

I’ll wait for the 5G, next year, lol.

  19. Adrenalyne says:

I for sure will upgrade my 3gs to the 4 – new specs look great!!

  20. Wicked Soul says:

    ah can’t wait… i wish i could get it in JUNE 🙁

  21. Litesandsirens911 says:

I have an iPhone 3G that I just got in December and my provider is Telus…I had a blackberry, DH still has a Blackberry, and my iPhone plan is actually 10.00 cheaper and it has EVERYTHING..I don’t know how I ever lived without it…it even has an interactive app for the new company I work for, which is awesome!
The iphones 3G are only $99.00 if you sign a 3 year plan with Telus..I got mine free because my Blackberry was defective…

  22. Paula says:

I can’t wait to get one. I’ve been wanting an Iphone for so long now and this is the pefect time.

  23. Stephania says:

No, I don’t have the need for one. Plus I find dataplans waaay too expensive here in Canada! When will it be more affordable here?

  24. chipmunk says:

I’m waiting for the 10G suppose to come out in few years 🙂 It will have MMS finally 🙂

  25. PPK says:

We don’t get them as the same time as the US possibility because Canadian carriers are not ready to handle additional more Apple iPad/iPhones.

Unlike the US, we have a small population to sustain a high efficiency/capacity network (93% of us lives in major cities….). This is the same reason why our data plans are still expensive.

I think Bell/Telus/Rogers should all just work together to make one good network rather than making small and bad ones. We just can’t have different standards running on a small populations.

  26. Khristopher says:

The only way I will get it is if WIND Mobile gets it.

  27. Hockeymom73 says:

I just got a 3G in April and honestly love my phone. I would like to get a 4 but will have to wait a while. I love this phone and have been extremely happy. Yay APPLE!!!

  28. Sabina says:

This might sound bad but I think I will wait I found out from my cousin that I can get it from chain or japan for less a lot less it just won’t have the apple name on it and its unlocked so I can use it anywhere

  29. Peter says:

    Probably

  30. sean m. says:

is anyone else saddened that this website is just turning into one giant commercial?

  31. Len Currie says:

I actually have been saving up for an iPhone for awhile, and I was waiting patiently for this announcement.

Sadly it’s not available in Canada until next month – but that’s fine, I’m not done saving up anyhow!

Looks great, and this will be my first iPhone experience 🙂 Can’t wait.

  32. Cheers says:

Definitely! I’ve been waiting for this one as I’m still (believe it or not) running around with my 2G iPhone (yes, the original one, not available in Canada)!!! I think Apple builds brand loyalty very well – I haven’t tried a BB nor an android platform but I’m really not inclined to do so b/c I’m happy with my iPhone & what it does for ME.

I really believe that tech gadgets are really personal & can be personalized & adapted to each consumer’s needs. I have friends & colleagues who cannot live with their BBs & will not try an iPhone even if it was free, & I have techy friends who drool over the Droids. So really, the best device for you is the one that suits your neeeds & likes!

As for the reasons for the launching delay in Canada, we are considered a smaller market (and let’s face it, even our indignation at not even having the 1st gen iPhone was sort of short-lived & well… Insignificant for the giant). Not saying it’s a good thing, just stating a fact & shrugging my shoulders.

For the reasons above – as well as a bizarre oligopoly of a market – our service providers can laugh all the way to the bank by keeping voice/data plans high. Could market deregulation help? Maybe, but legislation is long & hard to change, so until then… (shrugging again).

Last thing, I visit this site for various reasons, and maybe I’m not interested in ALL the sections or posts about ALL the subjects. But I choose to read the things that interest me and am not bothered by the fact that there are discussions about other companies’ products. I don’t think an open discussion or a “survey” about buying one product or not is an ad for tat company. In fact, I find it useful as a consumer to read others’ opinions, as it might help me make my purchasing decision. And this is how I see this site, as a BIG help to me as a consumer, to get the best deal out there, with contributors from the entire community.

Please excuse any typos, the keyboard on my iPhone’s quite small 😀

    Cheers!

  33. Natasha says:

Does anybody know if it is possible to trade in your current iphone to upgrade to the newest model?

Hello , Just noticed you’ve forgotten an important part of every starcraft player’s success story – game replays! And here’s my 2 cents about great games played in beta

  35. Paula David says:

    nope!

  36. JOHN says:

    BECAUSE
Canadian are under the USA People what Apple’s think.
That’s why I’m not buying apple. I’m going to Google.

  37. MollyMurr says:

I’m upgrading and hopefully moving from Rogers to SaskTel so I can get a signal outside the major cities.

I’d upgrade just to get the flash on the camera!

  38. I’ve already got the money to buy one put aside, and will be selling my 3GS upon purchase. I hate to wait until July, but.. I think I’ll make it. The all-white iPhone 4 looks schweet! I have a white-backed 3GS, but always wished the front matched. Now it does! 😀

  39. bubbly says:

    @chipmunk
uh the iPhone does have MMS…

  40. Joyce says:

I bought an iPhone from the US when they weren’t even available in Canada yet. After about 6 months, I bought a Blackberry instead. I hated texting on the iPhone.

  41. Unknown says:

I am selling my iphone3gs from now so I can get the iphone 4 when it comes out in canada. cannot wait!!!

  42. Club Penguin says:

I’ve heard of this before, but is it worth the price?

  43. Gman says:

I lived in the states when the first iphone came out. Got that one. Loved it. The appstore and the iphone 3g revolutionized things again so I got that one. I skipped the 3gs because it was just faster with low res video. That wasn’t enough for me to upgrade.

But the 4…stand back. I’m all over that like a fat kid on a smartie.

I’m a pro songwriter, and I love the iphone. I have one of the best guitar tuners on the market as an app on my iphone. My guitar actually plugs in to the phone and tunes it.

I also have a complete digital audio workstation. Which means that I can do multiple recording tracks on the fly with instrument patches that are native to the particular app that I use.

If you’re a creative person and want your technology to help you create than this is the Mecca.

    If you don’t believe me…

  45. Jeremy Incogneto says:

actually, if you guys are still considering getting an iPhone4 you might wanna head over to gizmodo.com just google it if this forum does not allow links, but over there you will find all the press good/bad (although there is a lot of bad press going on for *cough* poor ol’ apple right now)

  46. Kelly says:

I bought an the new iphone 4 with Virgin Mobile Canada. I am starting to wish I hadn’t as Virgin’s cusomer service IS THE WORST IN THE WORLD! They hire very young kids for customer service and clearly do not train them.

    AVOID VIRGIN MOBILE
