American Apparel Inc. Files for Bankruptcy Protection

apparel007.jpg

The controversial fashion line American Apparel Inc. filed for bankruptcy with the US courts today, struggling to keep its cool persona while juggling lawsuits and mounting debt.

The company was founded in 1989 by Mr. Dov Charney, while he was a student at Tufts University. The sexually provocative advertising campaigns, skin-tight clothing, and retro designs helped make the company popular among teens and young people. American Apparel has built up its reputation as a brand by defying many social norms.

American Apparel, one of the few clothing retailers still manufacturing in the United States, said its stores and manufacturing operations would continue to operate normally under a restructuring deal reached with most secured lenders.

WOW Airlines To Launch Flights/Tickets to Iceland for $99 and Flights to Europe from Just $149

wow_air

Discount airline WOW Air is really living up to its name with its latest announcement. The airline just announced a plan that offers travellers flights from Montreal or Toronto to Iceland for $99 one way as well as travel to numerous destinations in Europe for only $149! This Iceland based airline says service via Reykjavik will start in Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau airport on May 12, 2016, and out of Toronto’s Pearson airport on May 20, 2016.

The costs given are of course just the one way base fares, so all applicable airport charges and taxes are still in effect, but even with taxes, this could end up being one of the most affordable way for Canadians to see Europe. For extra fees, you can also purchase add-ons and upgrades for your flight such as up to $106 to change a ticket, up to $82 for extra leg room, and up to $246 to check three heavy bags.

This newer airline launched in 2011 and has quickly grown with it’s basic amenities flights for European travellers. WOW is now expanding into North America, with flights east already launched in Boston and Baltimore earlier this year. The expansion seems to be working as WOW claims that passenger loads rose by 45% in June and August compared to the same period last year.

In addition to Reykjavik, other European destinations WOW offers service to include London, Paris, Berlin, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Dublin.

WOW’s expansion into Canada will create about 100 new jobs between Montreal and Toronto’s airports. Both services will operate year round, and departures will leave on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Keurig Canada to Release the Keurig Kold Pop Machine

Announcements 5 comments

09302015

Keurig Canada has recently announced a new addition coming soon to it’s home brewer line-up. Soon it will be possible to brew a cup of your favoutire Coca Cola beverage using the Keurig Kold machine! This machine uses individual pods similar to the Keurig pods used to make coffee, but you’ll be able to whip up a glass of drinks including Coke, Sprite, Dr Pepper and flavoured seltzer waters. The machine was said to launch online beginning today, however Keurig’s Canadian website is still listing a “coming soon” banner on their page, so it may be available only in the US as of now.

Keurig is hoping that the Kold will be one of its hottest sellers, saying they hope it to be bigger than the hot brewers which they claim are currently in 17% of all US households. Coca-Cola is also betting on the Kold as well. The beverage company has a 16.8% stake in Keurig Green Mountain.

When compared to an already popular home soda maker, the SodaStream, the Kold has a few differences. With SodaStream, users can add as much flavour and carbonation as they want by pressing down on the CO2 canister. The canister also needs to be replaced every few weeks depending on how often it’s used. The Kold on the other hand, is much more controlled. Users just fill up the water tank and insert a pod which has both the flavour syrup and carbonation inside in 2 separate chambers. The machine will then make your drink in 90 seconds or less, chilling your water in the process.

This machine sounds neat, however the suggested retail price of the Keurig Kold is $369.99USD, which is about $495.41 Canadian, which may turn some people off. As with the coffee brewers, the soda pods are an additional cost with 8oz serving pods costing between $1.12 and $1.25 each. As of right now, it doesn’t look like a way to save on costs, as many avid pop drinkers can stock up on cans for less per serving than just the price of the pods alone. However, Keurig CEO Brian Kelley says that the  Kold is a way for people to have a variety of drinks at their disposal, without the clutter of cans and bottles. Along with the popular Coke drinks available, the Kold can make “craft” sodas made by Keurig, and later this year, people can also purchase pods for cocktail mixers.

The Keurig Kold isn’t available online in Canada yet, but will be available soon.

Google Canada: Unlocked Nexus 6P Phones to Start Shipping this October

Announcements 0 comments

09302015

Google Canada recently announced the addition of the Nexus 6P to their smartphone family, and while it won’t begin to ship unlocked until this October, it’s already generating a lot of buzz.

In terms of display, the Nexus 6P is not much different from its predecessor, the Nexus 6. The new phone has a slightly smaller screen at 5.7″ compared to the previous 6 inches, and like the previous model, it also includes a 2K AMOLED display. What makes the 6P different from all other phones in the Nexus range is that it is the first aluminum handset. Its body is made from well crafted aluminum with expertly crafted edging and ports. This phone also includes a Nexus fingerprint reader on the back, which boasts the ability to read your prints in a few milliseconds.

Other features of the Nexus 6P include:

  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow Operating System
  • 12.3 Mega pixel rear camera
  • 8 mega pixel front camera
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, 2.0 GHz Octa-core 64-bit and Adreno 430 GPU processors
  • 3GB RAM
  • 178g weight
  • Dual front-facing stereo speakers
  • 3 microphones (2 front, 1 rear)

Along with these great features, this latest Nexus model was made by Chinese company Huawei which is known by many to make svelte and sturdy metal cased phones. The included charger is also said to charge your phone twice as fast as the iPhone 6 and 6S and just 10 minutes of charging will get you up to 7 hours of power. The phone is available in multiple colours including aluminum and graphite. There is a white option of the phone, but its availability seems to be limited on many websites.

Pricing for the Nexus 6P is as follows:

  • $699 for the 32GB Nexus 6P
  • $749 for the 64GB Nexus 6P
  • $849 for the 128GB Nexus 6P

Pricing for the Nexus 6P has seemed to jump up significantly this time around, with prices in the US starting at $499 compared to our $699. This is most likely in response to the lower Canadian Dollar. Buying the phone directly from the Google Store will get you the unlocked version, which is favourable for anyone who doesn’t want to be locked to one service provider. However, you can get the phone for less if you’re willing to sign a contract with your wireless provider.

Google will begin shipping phones purchased online in October 2015. However, there may be a lot of orders placed already as the site says the phone will ship in 4-5 weeks.
