Costco Canada is giving priority access for healthcare workers and first responders. Costco is temporarily allowing priority access to the warehouses for Costco members who are healthcare workers and first responders such as police officers, EMTs and firefighters. Healthcare workers and first responders who present a Costco membership card and official identification of their role, will be allowed to move to the front of any line to enter the warehouse.

Also, Costco is no longer allowing more than two people to enter the warehouse with each membership card. This temporary change is for your safety and the safety of our employees and other members, and to further assist with our social distancing efforts.

Special Operating Hours for Members Ages 60 or Older: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., Costco will temporarily implement special operating hours for members who are 60 and older or who have a physical disability. The pharmacy will also be open during this hour; however the food court will maintain its normal operating schedule.  *Locations in Courtenay and Nanaimo, British Columbia will open from 9.a.m. to 10 a.m.

Employed individuals who have not lost any income do NOT qualify for CERB.

To qualify for CERB, an employer or self-employed ceases working for at least 14 consecutive days within a four week period and do not receive any income or benefits (unstated at this time). The individual cannot be eligible for EI (however, the government is exempting this factor for now due to the EI backlog).

The reason for the loss of work can be due to being sick, quarantine, taking care of an individual that is suffering from a quarantine, and taking care of a child that is sick or home because of school closure. Individuals that also are employed, but do not receive income due to work interruptions are also eligible.

The recipient also needs to be a Canadian resident, be at least 15 years old, and have earned $5,000 in employment, self-employment income, or maternity/parental benefits in 2019 or the twelve months before their CERB application.

More news due to COVID-19 Coronavirus! Canada is barring entry to all travellers who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today.

There will be exceptions for air crew, diplomats, immediate family members of citizens and, “at this time,” U.S. citizens, Trudeau said. The prime minister also said no one who is displaying symptoms will be permitted to board a flight to Canada, and that air operators will be required to complete a basic health assessment of every passenger based on guidelines from the Public Health Agency of Canada. “I know this news will spark concern among Canadians travelling abroad. I want to assure you than our government will not leave you unsupported,” he said.

“To help asymptomatic Canadians to return home, our government will set up a support program for Canadians who need to get on a plane. Canadian travellers will be able to get financial assistance to help them with the costs of returning home or temporarily covering basic needs while they wait to come back to Canada.”

As another measure to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, Trudeau said international flights will be funnelled to airports in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver to enhance screening.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is stepping up manpower, educational materials and screening measures at airports and all other entry points to Canada to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Beginning today, all incoming travellers, no matter where their country of origin is, will be asked if they are experiencing symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing or fever. They also will need to acknowledge that they are being asked to self-isolate for 14 days if they’re arriving from any international location.

All travellers seeking entry into Canada will have to answer the health screening questions and CBSA officers will be on the lookout for visible signs of illness. They will refer any traveller who they suspect of being ill, regardless of how the traveller answered the health screening question, to public health authorities for further evaluation.

There are now about 375 presumptive and confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Canada.

Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.
