Thanksgiving is here! If you’re serving poultry (turkey, chicken and duck) at Thanksgiving, be sure to check the following food safety tips provided by Health Canada.
Remember, if poultry isn’t properly prepared, cooked or stored, you and your family could be at risk of getting food poisoning. Cooking poultry to the proper internal temperature kills harmful bacteria in the food, but it doesn’t help control bacteria that may have been spread around your kitchen while the food was being prepared. Follow these safety tips to help protect you and your family!
Clean:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw poultry.
- Clean and sanitize the sink, as well as all surfaces and utensils that have come into contact with raw poultry or its juices to avoid cross-contamination.
- You can either use commercially available cleaners or make your own cleaning spray by mixing 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of household bleach with 750 ml (3 cups) of water.
Separate:
- Store poultry in a leak-proof bag or container in the refrigerator or freezer immediately after you buy it.
- Thaw poultry in the refrigerator or in cold water. If you thaw poultry in cold water, keep it in its original packaging and change the water regularly. Thawing poultry at room temperature is not recommended.
- Do not rinse poultry before cooking it. This can spread bacteria throughout your kitchen, wherever the water splashes.
Cook:
- Cook whole poultry until the temperature of the thickest part of the breast or thigh is at least 82ºC (180ºF). Cook poultry pieces to a minimum internal temperature of 74ºC (165ºF). Use a digital food thermometer.
- Cook stuffing separately in its own dish or on the stove top. If you do stuff your turkey, stuff it loosely just before roasting and remove all stuffing immediately after you remove the turkey from the oven. Cook stuffing to a minimum internal temperature of 74ºC (165ºF).
Chill:
- Refrigerate leftovers within two hours of cooking. Foods such as fully cooked poultry and potatoes can be eaten cold, but if you are reheating leftovers, heat them to 74ºC (165ºF) or warmer. Gravy should be reheated to a full boil.
- You can safely re-freeze poultry that has not been fully defrosted. If you can see ice crystals on the surface of the meat, it is safe to re-freeze.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

The controversial fashion line American Apparel Inc. filed for bankruptcy with the US courts today, struggling to keep its cool persona while juggling lawsuits and mounting debt.
The company was founded in 1989 by Mr. Dov Charney, while he was a student at Tufts University. The sexually provocative advertising campaigns, skin-tight clothing, and retro designs helped make the company popular among teens and young people. American Apparel has built up its reputation as a brand by defying many social norms.
American Apparel, one of the few clothing retailers still manufacturing in the United States, said its stores and manufacturing operations would continue to operate normally under a restructuring deal reached with most secured lenders.

Apple Canada has recently announced that the official release of the latest iPhones, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are due to hit stores on September 25, 2015. First released in 2007, the iPhone quickly rose to become one of the most recognizable and popular smartphones worldwide!
The latest version of the iPhone will come either in the iPhone 6s, an improved version of last year’s iPhone 6, or in the iPhone 6s Plus, a larger version of the phone.

The iPhone 6s has hardware much like the iPhone 6, but the chassis is now made of a stronger aluminum that was first used in the Apple Watch. The phone is available in 4 colours including gold, silver, space grey, and new rose-gold. Apple states that the chip inside the phone is 70% faster than the iPhone 6 and has 90% better graphics performance. The iPhone 6s also has a 12 megapixel rear facing camera which is an improvement on the previous model’s 8 megapixel camera, however the front facing camera remains 5 megapixels. The new phone also has 2GB of RAM, more than any previous phone model! The iPhone 6s Plus boasts the same specifications, but has a much larger 5.5 inch screen.
The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus can be pre-ordered beginning on September 12, 2015. They don’t seem to be selling out as quickly online this year as in the past, as I noticed quite a few left on Apple’s website. The phone will be released in stores in Canada and world wide on September 25, 2015. You can head into an Apple Store beginning at 8am on the 25th to pick up an unlocked version of the phone. There tends to be a lineup for new phones at larger malls, so I would suggest arriving a few hours early to guarantee you get your phone. You can also pre-order and purchase a phone through many wireless providers such as Bell and Rogers, however these phones will be locked to your provider.
Apple iPhone 6s pricing in Canada is as follows:
- iPhone 6s 16GB – $899+tax
- iPhone 6s 64GB – $1029+tax
- iPhone 6s 128GB – $1159+tax
Apple iPhone 6s Plus pricing in Canada:
- iPhone 6s Plus 16GB – $1029+tax
- iPhone 6s Plus 64GB – $1159+tax
- iPhone 6s Plus 128GB – $1289+tax
Unfortunately, it seems as though the iPhone prices this year have jumped up at least $100 from previous years. However, if you’re looking to get a new phone, the release of the newest iPhone model means that previous models should have price drops soon!
Will you be purchasing the new iPhone 6s or 6s Plus models?
