How Do You Get Movies Canada?

3058vhs1
If you have read my long posts before you know how I love comparisons.  I thought it was about time I did some value checking on movies.  I’ve picked a few popular services available to all Canadians.  Let’s talk price, value and expectations for each.

The Movie Network (Cable and Satellite)

My Rating:  3 out of 5

Cost is the most prohibitive factor here and I will get to that in a second.  The Movie Network has awesome selection including some great series and near-new releases for movies.  Also, they deserve a plus for the amount of Canadian content they carry.  I would have scored The Movie Network a lot lower except for the OnDemand service you get included with it.  No longer restricted to watching the programming schedule you can select which features you want on your own timeline.  Find out more here.  TMN might not be available where you are but with some national competitors like the Super Channel there is always something similar available.

Now let’s talk cost.  At $20 for the service you also need to have a basic digital package with most service providers.  For what you get it’s good but looking at other options makes you want more value.

Netflix

My Rating:  5 out of 5

For $8 a month (plus the cost of at least a 5mbps Internet connection) and you can stream all the movies the carry for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.  The value is great but the selection has it’s naysayers and it’s champions.  Personally, I love the choices.  Of course it isn’t the newest of the new but for the vast library of television shows this service has is worth the cost of entry alone.  Just this last week I enjoyed Paranormal Activity 1 and 2, hours of sketch comedy shows (while folding laundry), and watched my wife squeal in excitement at the availability of every episode of the classic 90210.

Throw in popular shows like Mad Men and Stargate, Stand-Up Comedy, and tons of kids features and I’d be willing to pay over double what I do now for this good stuff.

You can get Netflix on your computer, video games console (even works on the Wii), Tablet and even some smartphones.

Blockbuster The Video Store

My Rating:  1 out of 5

The local video store was a staple when I was a kid.  You could rent a movie for a buck and return it the next day.  Free popcorn to eat while you browse and staff that knew how to recommend a good flick.  While I am sure there are still small corners of the country where these still exist the model of the video store has shifted.  A single movie rental is half the cost of ownership and you take the chance of the movie you want not being in stock.

I can no longer recommend the video store as a viable option but if you have a small location you like to support please give me your thoughts in the comments.

Online Video Stores (iTunes, PSN, xBox)

My Rating:  4 out of 5

While the prices vary between online movie retailers I find that it’s kind of like eBook comparison shopping ; while a few popular titles might be cheaper now, overall you will end up at the same total down the road.  These online locations offer renatls starting at about $2 for tv shows, $4 for classic movies and about $6 to $10 for high-definition new releases.

To be honest, I find renting digital content weird. You pay for something you don’t actually hold in your hand and you have to stop watching in 24 hours.  I guess you could make a similar argument about buying digital movies.

The high rating?  Convenience.

Pirating Movies

My Rating:  How can you rate free stuff?

Of course this has to be mentioned.  The prevelance of this activity in Canada tells me a lot of the saavy smartcanucks readers are downloading their content.  Torrents, Newsgroups and sharing use to be a regular thing for me but the invention of movie streaming via PS3 and Netflix has eliminated my desire.  Recent experience has shown me that I really wanted convenience in entertainment not a 100% discount.

I love discussion please add to my reviews below.  How do you get your movies?

Budget Friendly Projects Canada: Melted Crayon Art!

crayon-art-015

In a recent blog post I featured some Crayon Art that caught a few people’s attention … My boyfriend and I were inspired by this creative idea and decided to try making our own version.

Since this was such a budget friendly piece of art, I’ve decided to share and see if we can inspire some more creativity!

Cost breakdown:

  • Canvas: $11
  • Crayons $5
  • Crazy Glue $3
  • Hairdryer (free already owned)
  • TOTAL: Less than $20!

Step 1: Peel (optional) crayons and glue to canvas in desired order:

Step 2: Tilt canvas on an angle and begin to blow dry crayons:

(make sure to cover whichever surface you are working on as crayons may splatter)

Step 3: Melt away to your heart’s content until YOU are fully satisfied with the results.

Be creative, there’s no right or wrong! My BF and I decided to glue the crayons on 1/4 of the way down the canvas & melt in both directions, as well as hang the painting on it’s side as shown above 🙂

Jack-O-Lanterns Canada

peanutspumpkin

This is the weekend we, like many Canadians, are going to carve our pumpkin.  It’s always a fun adventure with the kids as they really enjoy scooping out the insides and picking out the seeds.  We do roast some seeds every year but I’m the only who usually eats them.
The last couple years we have been trying to branch out on our jack-o-lantern design.

I grew up with your traditional looking jack-o-lantern so we find it quite fun to try to think of different ways to make our pumpkin look.  We are by no means “artists”  but we make a modest effort and I must admit last year it turned out quite well.  My oldest wanted hers to look like a cat and I tried my best  to oblige.   In the end it turned out too look like a pretty good cat complete with ears and cat like eyes.

Our youngest opted for almost a more traditional jack-o-lantern but with a “angry monster mouth” which again I did my best to provide.
Carving our pumpkins is always an afternoon of family fun.  We get quality time together and memories to last for forever.

Here are my steps for picking a good pumpkin:

  1. Pick an appropriate shaped pumpkin.  The shape of your pumpkin should match the shape of the design you have in mind
  2. our pumpkin should sit flat without rolling away or to its side.
  3. Make sure the pumpkin’s skin is free from scratches, cuts and abrasions.
  4. Check your pumpkin for soft spots and make sure the stem does not pull free.  These are signs that the pumpkin has started to rot.

Here are some links to sites that have templates for jack-o-laterns:

  • The Pumpkin Lady – This site sells templates but they also offer a freebies section.  Visit the free templates here.
  • DLTK – My wife use this site a lot for her daycare and for her Sparks unit.  It has lots of neat craft and activity ideas.  Check out DLTK’s pumpkin carving patterns here on their Halloween page.
  • Carve an online Jack-o-lantern by clicking here – This site is just a fun little thing to do either for yourself or the kids.
  • Want to see more crazy carvings?  Try here

How do you carve your pumpkins?  What’s the most extreme pumpkin you’ve ever carved or seen?

Metro Ontario: Printable Coupon For 50% Off Olymel Chicken (Oct. 28 – Nov. 3, 2011)

olymel

This is a great coupon from Metro Ontario’s Facebook page. It’s for 50% off the regular retail price of Olymel Chicken Breast Chunkies 600g and Chicken Wings 650g, to a maximum discount of $4.50. I’ve actually tried this product using my $2.50 coupon from gocoupons.ca and it was really good. The chicken is an actual piece of chicken breast, as opposed to ground, minced, or processed chicken that so many other brands have. It would be awesome if they’d accept the 50% off coupon along with the $2.50 coupon. I’m gonna try my luck on the weekend!
