DIY Frugal Fashion: Shirt As Skirt!

Other / Canada

Did your skirt or pants just split? Like the pattern of a long sleeved shirt, but tired of wearing it? Can’t be bothered to alter a shirt that’s a tad too big? On the hunt for a new skirt style? Did you inherit a bunch of shirts from an ex? Well, here’s a cheap, diy answer…turn that shirt into a skirt!

I read about the idea here on Chictopia, but apparently, the Japanese have been pulling off this look for years! Why am I not surprised, there always ahead of us here!

Anyway, I decided to try out the trend for myself, and here are the results…

After trying quite a few button-ups in my closet, I settled on this snap button denim shirt which was a more relaxed fit. Shirt Skirt would probably work best with an oversized shirt, so that you can have more material to play with, and even make a bow out of the sleeves.

Minus the shoes, if you don’t have these items in your closet already, it’ll cost you $15 tops! I purchased both the shirt (GAP, $9.99) + vintage Christian Dior silk tank (~$5) at Value Village.

If you’re brave enough to attempt the look, here are a few tips:
– Do not use a slim fit shirt. There are just not enough buttons/material to work with!

– The look is meant to look asymmetrical. So a tail-cut buttom hem is probably a bit more flattering than a shirt cut straight across.

– Belt not required. Unless you use a short-sleeved shirt, the sleeves act as a belt, so skip this extra bulk!

– Try doing up the buttons asymmetrically, on the diagonal.

– Aside from button-ups, you can use other shirts as well, including cardigans and sweaters. If it’s a pullover, just make sure your waist fits through the neck.

– Play with different patterns and textures! This look is not meant to be Banana Republic-Safe. Try polka dots, florals, or even stripes!

– Balance out your proportions. Since the bottom is a bit bulky, with the sleeve-belt, pair it with a more fitted top.

– Have fun! Fashion is only about taking risks, but it’s meant to be fun as well. So don’t forget that!

Be brave! My version felt pretty secure. 😉

i didnt care about what you have posted in the past, but this DIY fashion is kind of ridiculous.

  2. Orchidgril says:

I think it a great idea, especially if you can’t get a extra pair of pants, just swipe your partners shirt and voila. I don’t think i could brave this look otherwise.lol

  3. kaykay says:

  4. smurfy says:

‘Little Edie’ Beale did that look too. 🙂

  5. B... says:

    change your way?…LOL n can’t stop LOL

  6. yvn says:

i saw this online somewhere, and you can also wear it as a tube top! i tried it and it’s really cute, i like it wear it as a bikini cover up.

  7. Cheryl888 says:

I am fairly fashion forward, but I have to say, this is ugly. Can you not find another amazing fine (ahem….Christian Dior tank at VV?!!?!!!) there to just use as a jean skirt?
Also, with a silk top, personally, I think this would just make you look fat. A more defined skirt goes much better with silk/chiffon,etc.
Why try and add more padding to your ass/hips if you dont have to? lol

  8. really? says:

Yeah Cheryl888 we all strive to have boy hips and flat asses lol

This look is not for me, but it is creative. A big part of any outfit is if you feel confident in it. So rock the shirt skirt if you can.

    Thanks for sharing the idea.

  9. Jenn says:

Omg that is hideous!! You should delete this before someone with no fashion sence thinks it’s ok to do. Plus the orange shirt, denim and red shoes – epic fail!!

  10. SY says:

It kinda looks like something I would do if i spilled coffee all over my pants and only happened to have an extra shirt lying around..

  11. Lori says:

I agree, rock it if you’ve got it.

  12. Nic says:

I’ve seen this as far back as about 5 years ago and I think it’s great.
I haven’t tried it myself, as I don’t think I have the body for it, but I think it’s cute and creative and a great way to extend ones wardrobe.

“- Have fun! Fashion is only about taking risks, but it’s meant to be fun as well. So don’t forget that!”

    Deff true! 🙂

  14. jopava says:

I’m sorry but LOL this is kind of interesting good experiment you are so brave!!!

  15. lors says:

i tryed it with my bf shirt it didnt work hes a lil bigger then me !

  16. roseofblack25 says:

I love the ones that people have made bows out of the sleeves. I think if you tried to tuck the sleeve ends into the knot it would look more bow like and less shirt like. I don’t own any button up long sleeve shirts so I can’t try the look otherwise I would!

  17. Natalka says:

Nope, it’s fugly, but not as bad as too much ‘shoe cleavage’…

  18. Stephania says:

I wouldn’t go as far as “fugly”, fat, stupid, or homeless, but I should’ve tied the sleeves up. I don’t think they were long enough and the material is also thick.

Another tip: Stick to light, flowy materials so that you can make your bow!

  19. Joyce says:

I love risky fashion, especially if the Japanese fashionistas are doing it. Though this kinda reminds me of growing up in the 90’s when we get tired of wearing our jean jacket we just tie it around our waist. lol.

  20. KS says:

I am really quite appalled at how rude some people have become lately on this site. Guess what? If you don’t like off-topic posts, simply scroll down and go on your merry way. Guess what? Even if this skirt/idea isn’t your taste, there’s no need to be blatantly rude to the author of the post. A simple “I don’t care for it” would do just fine. Whatever happened to “Netiquette?”

Personally, this isn’t a look for me as I tend to dress more conventionally, but if someone has the confidence to wear it (especially if they have the legs to show it off), why not?

  21. runningmom23 says:

I agree with KS people are being REALLY rude! I personally wouldn’t wear it but whatever ….there have definitely been worse fashion faux pas. Remember “it’s not what we wear but how we wear it!!!” Stand tall and Proud 🙂

  22. Netiquette says:

    I don’t care for it

  23. ModCloth Coupon says:

I ever saw some women also make a skirt by themselves, I think it’s too complicated. Your vintage skirt is so beautiful. I love the vintage trend.

  24. Tara says:

Such an awesome idea! I don’t think I could personally pull off this look, but I can appreciate the money saving/re purposing aspect of it. Good post Stephania, just ignore the haters 🙂

  25. r says:

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm i don’t care for it

  26. wow says:

I agree with KS. It’s amazing how people say such rude things and think it’s okay since they are hidden behind a computer screen. I think the shirt/skirt idea is really unique but I don’t think I can pull it of as well as Stephania.

  27. Jade says:

I have seen a trendy friend pull this off in the past but she bought 2 patterned halter tops that were exactly the same and she wore 1 as a top and the other as the skirt and it looked amazing because it just looked like one dress and you couldn’t even tell it was 2 tops put together. I would only do this idea with turning halter/tube tops into skirts because you can easily hide what they are. Anything with sleeves would just look tacky and like ur too cheap to buy an actual skirt. Pull this off ONLY if you can’t tell that it’s a shirt otherwise ppl will be looking at u funny…trust me!

  28. Chao says:

I like off-topic on this website. Shirt-skirt is kinda nice idea but I am not into fashion much so it’s not for me. But if you have good sense of fashion or artistic sense, it works great I guess.

  29. laura says:

I wonder is would the shirt fit after some us say squeezed into our tops to look like skirts…

  30. Bobb says:

Is it April this has got to be a joke if you want to be frugal go to the salvation army and buy a 50 cent denim skirt if I ever sa someone wearing this in public first thought would be they escaped the puzzle factory there is using coupons then there is being ridiculus

  31. Amanda says:

Terrible, absolutely terrible. It looks like it only cost $5. I’d never be caught dead in this.

  32. Sick and Tired says:

Some of the replies are ridiculously rude, I’m getting so tired of this. I also enjoy the off-topic posts. Even if I don’t like the idea, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it’s “fugly” or “homeless”. Come on people! If you don’t like it, shut up and move along! I think if you’re under 25 and you can rock it, then go for it! I’ve seen much, much worse out there than this idea. 🙂

  33. Shannon says:

It’s kinda cute but I can’t shake the idea that everyone would assume that the “look” is the result of a period-related accident.

  34. robin says:

I think it’s a terrible idea, and makes you look like an idiot. Buy a skirt and wear it as a skirt. Buy a shirt and wear it as a shirt.

  35. sporatic says:

Well, it is just a brilliant idea in my opinion though I think the outcome needs some adjustments. I think the idea can be polished to get better results and of course it is not for every one.

  36. LOL@Shannon says:

@Shannon: your comment literally brought me to tears. LOL!

  37. E says:

Oi – that is pretty ugly. Not something I would ever attempt at wearing – it kinda looks like something out of my mom’s closet from like the 1990’s. Sorry if it’s harsh, but it’s how I feel about it. If you like it – then good on ya, wear it proud. But I just would never wear that.

  38. E says:

P.s. To all those people telling us that “if we don’t like it, move on”… there is a comment box correct? If we have an opinion on this article, we are more than welcome to post our comments. It’s what a blog is for. So get off your ‘holier than thou’ high horse and come back to reality where we can all have a say in how we feel about this ugly dress.

For those who are insulting the blogger – that is inappropriate. There are other ways of expressing how you feel about the skirt and not the blogger.
