Gelato, what’s the big deal?

Other / Canada

With Summer approaching, what better way to cool off than to get a $1 McDonald’s soft drink/iced coffee (thumbs up!!!), $1 Tim Horton’s Frozen Lemonade (not for me personally), Mister Softee, ice cream cone/cup, or Gelato?

Well, I’ve come to the realisation that I just don’t ‘get’ Gelato. Granted, I’ve never been to Italy, but according to family & restaurant reviews, I have been to the better Gelaterias in the city and still haven’t been impressed by any explosions of joy to my mouth!

I do like the visual presentation: Rows of swirled, different coloured, flavoured ice with real fruit on top. However, in terms of the taste, it’s fleeting. I much prefer good ice cream, frozen yogurt a la Menchie’s/Yogurty’s/Ikea, or just soft serve!

How about you, do you ‘get’ Gelato??

I love Gelato! I find it so much more refreshing than ice cream. I always find that ice cream leaves a type of film, where as gelato doesn’t. My absolute favourite is lemon! So tart and thirst quenching!

I have never tried it. I don’t find the picture appetizing. Must be a big city thing…..I am a country girl who enjoys the occassional DQ dipped cone.

LOVE LOVE LOVE GELATO!!!! I loved it before going to Italy, and I love it more now! I still like ice cream, but Gelato is the BOMB!

  4. Eric says:

I’ve tried it in a little hidden shop in Halifax and loved it. It also depends on the flavour you get, I think. A scoop of peanut butter and a scoop of banana is decent together. Tiramisu – didn’t like. They had a spot here in Fredericton as well but that restaurant closed. It’s basically lower fat ice cream with natural ingredients and what seems to be a larger variety of flavours.

I love gelato. Good gelato is 100% better than any ice cream or frozen yogurt!

I LOVE GELATO! So much better than any ice cream.

i like gelato (especially pistachio and amaretto flavours) and one time took my mom for some. she didn’t like it! she said it wasn’t creamy enough for her and she liked ice cream better (especially ‘superkid’ flavour from Laura Secord) ha ha!

  8. DoodlesMom says:

I have to admit I love ‘good’ gelato … The real stuff that actually has flavor. It’s hard to get a good chocolate ice cream that tastes of chocolate instead of just sugar. My favorite used to be a dark chocolate with almonds that Laura Secord had years ago, but I can’t find it anymore.

Montreal’s Trudeau Airport has an excellent gelato shop by the domestic departures if anyone is in the area and has time before their flight. They had a chocolate one that tastes like chocolate and it was fantastic.

Apologies for the American spelling above, the iPad drives me nuts! Didn’t realize it was spelling improperly before I posted!

I love mediterranean sea salt carmel gelato the best. had it in texas a few times at Pacciugo. it is milk based. i dont love the ice based ones as much.

  11. haine says:

I love gelato. Less fat, feels less “heavy”, and much more refreshing than icecream.

  12. Love gelato! but try those ‘other’ flavours: black sesame, coca cola, green tea, and the real italian ones. Most people try to compare straight to ice cream, but that’s not what this is. You want extra flavour, go for a sorbetto instead but beware of the tart! If rich and creamy is what you are expecting tho, ice cream is still your lady

Love gelato esp too many choices in Vancouver the best is Mario’s closer than the east van one on vendables… Love the decantent flavours like lychee, mango, green tea, black sesame but as for classics I stick with chocolate, vanilla, even strawberry with ice cream

  14. Carla says:

Yeah personal preference thing, I’ve had it and I don’t get it.

  15. amy says:

never tried it….. i dont even know where i would buy it…. but i would love to try it. 🙂

  16. Wayne says:

Love Geloto….many exotic flavours and not as rich as Ice Cream which today has so many chemicals that it’s not ice cream anymore…it’s calld a “frozen desert”

  17. botto says:

not really a fan of gelato much rather have a frozen yogurt or ice cream. plus for all you crazy people the only difference between gelato and ice cream is gelato is stirred slower while it is being made. So it will have the same amount of “chemicals” or fat or anything else. It all depends where you buy it but I would much rather have a good marble slab ice cream than gelato from any place I have tried.

A store in streetsville Mississauga Carries gelato..

Gelato on a hot day in Venice = most delicious thing you’ve ever had. The rest of the time, it’s mostly just okay.

  20. Gloria says:

The real beauty is the fruit flavours … they capture a texture and intensity of flavour that isn’t found in ice cream. Raspberry is my very favourite, after which comes chocolate and black sesame.

The stirring is not the only difference. Ice cream contains more fat and more air, and it’s also served colder. It’s not just slower stirring — though that also makes a big difference since the result is that gelato is denser.

For really good chocolate gelato — Ed’s Real Scoop (Tanzanian Dark Chocolate) or Il Gelatiere Artigianale.

Good gelato is very good. and other trendy foods.Problem is, there is a lot of crap branding itself as gelato. This is also prevalent with sushi

That said, nothing makes good gelato inherently superior to good ice cream. It’s just different. And visual presentation is just a gimmick, it has nothing to do with the quality. The best gelati I had in Italy were very plainly displayed.

  22. Paul says:

Oops, drag-and-drop strikes again. My first paragraph above should read:

Good gelato is very good. Problem is, there is a lot of crap branding itself as gelato. This is also prevalent with sushi and other trendy foods.

I LOVE gelato!!! Soma @ the Distillery makes fantastic flavors.

how can someone with a name like ‘Stephania’ be such a mangiacake? lol 😉
gelato is amazing and largely made with healthy and pure ingredients (no corn syrup, modified this and that, etc)

  25. adora says:

I’ve lived in Italy, I get gelato. I ate one everyday, sometimes two…
The deal about Italian gelato is the milk. The grass-fed no-hormone cows in Europe produce very creamy milk. It foams up a lot better than our milk, so the icecream can be a lot more airy due to higher surface tension. The flavouring ingredients can thus be increased in percentage. Making it a lot more tasty. Also, Italian gelato are often made fresh daily. i.e. a real gelato would contain less milk, more flavor, less calories versus our icrecream by volume.
I understand why you don’t get it. Gelato is just fancy name for icecream. A lot of snob will have you think that it is better than Icecream, but it is not.

  26. Zxc says:

I love ice cream. It is the one dessert I can make room for. But I too enjoy gelato’s less creaminess. More importantly, when I go out with lactose intolerant friends, it’s preferred over ice cream. Frozen yogurt is amazing too.

  27. Taz says:

Gelato is made from milk whereas ice cream is made from heavy cream, hence the much lighter feel of gelato in the mouth. I love both but if it comes down to a choice, I’d always go for a good gelato.

  28. roseofblack25 says:

I’ve honestly never tried it…I find it’s too expensive for such a tiny amount where I live…

  29. Nichelle says:

I much prefer gelato over ice-cream. MMMMMM. I love the flavours better.

  30. test says:

lol italian gelato is a must… when i went last year to italy the gelato there blew away any gelato i hade here (i.e la paloma)

    my 2 cents anyway

  31. Jenn says:

Got to love gelato because it’s supposed to be lighter than ice cream and have more variety of flavours – eventhough I prefer ice cream. But like ice cream, it have to be the REAL THING. There are so many products out there that are just a “chemistry experiment”. Even when they use real cream/milk, the rest are just mostly “unreadable ingredients”. For me, they have to be all natural. Worth paying the price for them.

  32. Mary says:

I don’t get places that charge $5 for the tiniest cup, haha. There are some decent places I’ve had in Toronto though, which I wouldn’t mind getting gelato from again. Pistachio gelato done right is so good. 😀 But most of the time it’s really weird tasting. =( There’s a place near my home that serves a very generous portion for about the same as ice cream though which I think is the way it should be. 😛

  33. orly says:

your posts always annoy me lol

  34. J says:

If you don’t “get” gelato or can’t taste/see the difference between it and ice cream then believe me when I say you haven’t had real (good) gelato.

I worked for an amazing gelato company in Italy.
A good “tip” on judging the quality of gelato in a shop is to look at the banana or lemon flavours— THEY SHOULD BE WHITE! if they are yellow then it’s all artificial (and not good by gelato standards)

  35. Mel says:

Why the negativity? A good gelato is a lovely treat. 🙂

  36. Kim says:

Being lactose intolerant I don’t eat gelato (or ice cream for that matter), but when the craving for a nice cold dessert strikes, it’s off to Marina’s in Fort Langley…for sorbetto. Basically fruit ice. But creamy! Due to the sugar content i’m sure, but wow. The mango or blood orange are my favorites, but pink grapefruit & strawberry are two more that make my tastebuds do the happy dance.

  37. Sandra says:

Hi: I like gelato too. Where do you get a Mr. Softee? Is it $1.00 too?

  38. Tanya3t3 says:

Gelato is AMAZING!!!!!!!! Esspecially since you can get the true Gelato, Sorbeto, Ice Cream or Frozen Yogut at most Gelato places and its usually made right there so its Always Fresh

  39. wes says:

Best gelato i ever had was in Paris…i tried both apricot and rhubarb gelato. The flavours were extraordinary and so true to their taste! I bet italian gelato is just wonderful too, can’t wait to get to Italy someday. I have yet to find a great gelato place in Toronto. I don’t think I prefer one over the other (ice cream over gelato & vice versa) in general, but I haven’t seen apricot or rhubarb ice cream yet!

Do you you eat Margarine and think it’s butter too.
