How to Get Discount at Zellers Canada: 30 30 Rule

Update:

Sorry guys I did not know this was on specific items! I did not read the forum discussion when I posted this (I should have). And I was busy for most of the day yesterday and didn’t notice there was a problem till I read the comments now.

Zellers Canada 30 30 Rule

Thanks freeplease for posting this extremely useful Zellers discount information in the Canadian Deals & Flyers

I was reading someone’s comment about asking for discounts at stores etc.

So I just wanted to let everyone know… because I used to work at Zellers, They have what is called the 30 30 rule.

Which means any store employee is entitled to give a 30% discount to anyone on any item without having to go to a supervisor or manager. They will say ” I’ll give you 10 % off ” because they are supposed to give you the lowest possible. Just say No I’ll take the 30%. Just remind them of their rule!

    Bad, bad post.

I used to work at Zellers too, and my mom was a manager there. This rule was to be used in cases of damaged merchandise or customer service issues. It wasn’t to be used just because someone doesn’t want to pay the sticker price.

Beleive me, if someone asked me to take 30% of the price, “just cause”, I’d say, and acll my manager to back me up if need be.

This isn’t a deal or offer. It’s a rule in place to give cashiers some executive power instead of calling the manager when a customer is upset.

Please people, don’t try to start taking advantage of this. I think it was in poor taste to post this publicly, as the post is clearly missing key details.

  2. Sallycat says:

Benji….The original post didn’t sound right to me. How can one get a 30% discount just for asking? Thanks for posting and clearing up the details.

  3. Meh says:

    I’m with Benji on this.

Rules are in place to better serve customers with GENUINE complaints, errors – whatever the case may be. When such rules are taken advantage of that’s when you start hearing people complain about poor customer service; when rules are hardened due to abuse.

It’s posts like these that ruin the good intentions behind companies and makes the honest customers pay.

Agreed – don’t really think this is put in place for people to just ask for the discount. It gives cashiers some room to ensure the customer leaves happy, even if the item is damaged. I have actually had a Zellers employee discount something because it was in the same section as some sale merchandise, and I thought it was a sale item. The cashier was able to honour my (genuine) understanding, which really made me happy.

I personally couldn’t just ask for a discount when there’s nothing wrong – I work in a restaurant and people are always asking for free food for no reason. It makes you feel like the work you are doing is being undervalued, in a way. Personally, I think it’s a little bit to do with a sense of entitlement we feel as customers, that is going too far.

  5. Jill says:

I do apologize.. I did say as a reply after that it is only for when you should be entiitled to a discount. I apologiize again, I am new and I’m sorry I did not know to add it onto the original posting but I have done so now. SORRY!

  6. layniejoy says:

Jill – thanks for the information! I just won’t use it in the way it was presented in the post. Definitely good to know, though! Thanks again!

  7. Kim MacPherson says:

When I worked at Zellers we weren’t allowed to give more than 10% with approval from a CAP or manager. And yeah… Someone coming up and saying “I’ll take 30% off” will likely get nothing.

  8. Kitty says:

So totally inappropriate a post. :/
    I am not impressed.

  9. lilad says:

I took it to mean that the item was damaged or you were somehow entitled to a discount. Why else would the cashier offer you a ten percent discount? This isn’t a post encouraging people to ask the cashier for a 30% discount on everything out of the blue.

  11. Shammy says:

I think it’s irresponsible for smartcanucks not to change their post after reading feedback from its readers.

  12. Boo Radley says:

I didn’t know this was on specific items because I never read the forum discussion, which I should have. Sorry about that guys!

Monalisa, why do you read my blog if you think I post garbage?

  13. Lady says:

Sadly, I have been stuck in line behind people that think they can haggle prices at stores for no reason.

  14. Charles says:

That’s actually a point that doesn’t get brought up often, but probably affects a lot of us. With the economy how it is, and of course all of us want to get good deals anyway, lots of people (on all forums and even in the media) are suggesting haggling, trying to get discounts, speaking to the manager, etc etc – I wonder how much this affects service, especially lines at check-out. Even the increased number of people using as many coupons as they can causes longer lines, as the cashier has to carefully check each one to ensure it is admissible, all for 50 cents a pop.

I was at Loblaws the other day, and about 4 of us were stuck in line (was a small Loblaws in the mid-afternoon so only a couple checkouts open) behind this lady who was trying to persuade the cashier and then the manager to accept some coupon or discount for a “similar” product. The man in front of me was some kind of contractor who was trying to buy one item – one of those big bottles of water, I imagine for himself and other workers. Everyone was very patient about it, but really some people must have the thickest skin when they try to get some tiny discounts. And I bet they’d get steaming mad when waiting in line behind someone else trying to do it too!

  18. Marmaduke says:

This is a GREAT SITE! I really love all the info, savings, and
bantering…..BUT….I think the postings should be more throughly researched BEFORE-HAND.

Don’t post just to see your name in print!! Lack of reseach has caused a lot of damage to coupon collecters, retailers, and manufacturers…causing that a lot of stores to not accept printed coupons, will remove coupons that are placed in the store from reps..to much hassle and risk of lost to store and just a Book-Keepers nightmare…PRICE CHOPPERS has posted on their door “WILL NOT EXCEPT PC (printed) GENERATED COUPONS”

FUTHER..people who start name calling are childish, and should be banned….As for line ups in the store, we’ve all experiented that. both in front and in back….People talk to the cashier,
take to long to bag, get rude and antsy standing waiting, the guy in front you has to many items in the express line and you have only one item, shit happens…things are missed priced,
and the register entered the wrong amount. This has happened forever, and will encrease as some of us boomers get older and slower…….To save MYSELF a hassle I will ask before I get in line weather they except a certain coupon or if there is a discount, then I don’t waste time picking up an item only to find out that they don’t except a coupon or have a discount.. Even asked at the dollar store weather they excepted coupons or not..the cashier looked at me strangely and almost rudely told me why they didn’t, all I said in reply was “no harm in asking” totally up to the store weather they wish to par-tis-apait!!!
NOT REQUIRED BY LAW!!!!!! So don’t blow it for everyone else by posting inaccurate Notices..and take your lumps when you screw up. it’s nice to save, but cheap is cheap!!!!!

  19. Anisa says:

Seriously? If you want to complain do it about something important; more so than saving a few bucks at your local Zellers! Write your MP, change something in your community!

Boo I love what you do, keep up the good work.

Name-calling is immature. Scape-goating is worse.

Mistakes will happen and always remember, ALWAYS caveat emptor. This applies to things you read.

SMARTCANUCKS has saved me $100’s so far,won several contests AND a Home Reno ONLY because of SMARTCANUCKS, Boo and “family”.

Hey Boo- no worries here, I understand it was just a simple mistake. Thanks for a great website and all of your hard work.

  28. Sally says:

Well a lot of these comments are the same person lol. Btw if ‘Sally’ or ‘Boo’ or other Sc bloggers aren’t in blue its an imposter.

  29. Lillian says:

I understand that this post had some mistakes, but Smart Canucks is wonderful. Anyone who flames someone else for an honest mistake obviously has personal issues; this is not the time or place to air them out.

Keep up the great work Smart Canucks!

  30. Weeeooojr says:

Wow…Boo is insulted quite a bit here 🙁

  31. Sally says:

Its pretty much all by the same person, just using different names. I don’t think Boo’s too hurt by it lol.

  32. Boo Radley says:

People who are plain rude and offensive do not hurt me. People who are genuinely offended and express it politely I care about more!

  33. SALLY says:

    i care about this site
    but you were wrong boo

  34. Sally says:

Thats what I was trying to say Boo lol!

    Hi fake Sally.

  35. BOO says:

i knew i could care less about anyone

  36. BOO says:

    too bad sally

  37. Charles says:

Even if you disagree or are offended or whatever, calling someone names on their own (free) website is seriously disrespectful. If what he did upsets you so much, then leave! He is totally within his rights to post whatever he wants and behaves however he wants (within the confines of the law) – it’s a privilege to be allowed to read and participate in the deals, offers and advice that is only available here because there is an admin and other staff who makes it all happen. Unless you happen to have a web browser that is only capable of viewing this website, lay off the man!

  38. BOO says:
