Katy Perry’s California Gurls. Has Snoop Dog lost all street cred?

cupcakesuit

So once in a while us bloggers here at Smart Canucks about life in general or quirky things we come across on our daily adventures. Today I’d like to touch upon something really really serious. What happened to Snoop Dog did he hit his head has he smoked too much herb?

Snoop has been around for literally decades, rolling with his homies, sipping on gin and juice. He’s got some serious “street cred” thats for sure. Years ago when he filmed movies such as “Bones” and “Soul Plane” I did question such street cred he’s built up, but the movies seemed to be well accepted so I let it go.  They were just horrible movies.

Most recently he did a colab with Katy Perry, a really upbeat song “California Gurls”  that has been rocking the charts for about a month or so. I don’t mind it, his rhymes are pretty mindless but I didn’t expect much. I decided to watch the video, this is when I was so shocked I literally couldn’t stop laughing.  (Haven’t seen it? Click here.) Snoop Dog in  a cupcake suit. Yes a cupcake suit. I think hes lost street cred. What do you think? Do you think Snoop can rock a “gangsta” cupcake suit?  I think he can rock it, but I can’t see him hanging with his homies in it, thats for sure.

I wondered this exact same thing yesterday when I saw the video on Much… I did a double take, actually… thinking ‘that’s NOT Snoop, is it?!’ Great blog!!! THANKS!

  2. trucks12trucks says:

oh my..have you seen the “Oh Sookie” True Blood Music Video? he has totally wandered far away from his original style.

  3. AmberLab says:

Hey, Soul Plane was hella funny. :p

  4. CarlyinCanada says:

Cute, fun video! Love the song! 🙂

  5. 23edge says:

Snoop once killed a man in self denfense… I don’t he’ll ever lose any “cred”

  6. Chase says:

Extra street cred lost due to the song spelling “girls” with a u. It doesn’t make it cooler.

  7. Craig says:

I thought Soul Plane was hilarious. The one thing you need to understand about Snoop is that he’s not a thug rapper like most would think. He’s got his money and fame already. He runs a youth football team, if not the league they play in. He’s enjoying himself and his craft now. Having fun being Snoop. I’m not going to fault the man for that. He still has cred in my books.

  8. he only did it because he knew it would get crazy airplay, which = lots of $$$.

same with ludacris working with justin beiber.

  9. Abby1 says:

    @trucks12trucks: 🙂

  10. Mike W says:

Craig and 23edge have it right.

The man was rocking pony tails and still had the respect of the scene.
It may be an airhead song but he’s still representing the west coast. I doubt his fans will drop him over this.

  11. Sally says:

Dont get me wrong, I own both Bones and Soul Plane, and I do think hes pimp enough to pull of the suit. But a lot of others may not think so. I just find it hilarious.

  12. Zay says:

I agree, not just anyone can wear that suit and still be cool like the Dawg.

  13. Mau says:

Nay nay, you can’t mock Snoop until you’ve seen his “Singh is King” video on YouTube. It was an actual song used in a Bollywood movie! Finished watching it yet? Yes, now you may mock.

  14. Missy says:

what does street cred mean ? does it still exist ? how can you have street cred and over a million in the bank ? isn’t that an oxy moron ?

  15. Sally says:

No, 50 cent had street cred still and he has a lot of $$$, you can have billions in the bank and have street cred lol. Look at mafias, they have street cred and a lot of (dirty) money

  16. Sally says:

Mau, watched the video you suggested. Meh, a custom cupcake suit still beats it hhehe! Thanks for the recomendation!

  17. Stephanie says:

Snoop is the man. At this point nothing he could do would lower his street cred. Hes pretty much untouchable.

  18. gr1 says:

a bunch of kids on the internet judging street cred.. super cool.

  19. Sally says:

Lmao, I’m not a kid and this is just a funny post lol! I really dont care about “street cred”

  20. itsjustmebub says:

    bahahaha …. good times.

  21. Sara says:

We don’t know what was in all those cupcakes!
And ofcourse theres still the signture T&A in the video! lol

  22. Ian says:

We would never have seen Chuck D in a cupcake suit.

  23. Sporeo says:

Music is just getting crappier and crappier in my opinion. I feel old saying it somehow, but what in the hell are the girls wearing? Cupcake bras? And shooting whip cream out of your chest? Classy Sh!t. I couldn’t even watch the video all the way through.

  24. Justine says:

All cred is lost when you spell snoop dogg, snoop dog. 😉

  25. anisa says:

    who?

  26. Sally says:

Actually Justine throug the years its been spelt in different variations. 😉

Look it up. I just stuck with the one I liked the best.

Snoop Doggy Dog, Snoop Dawg, Snoop Dogg, Doggy, Cordozar Calvin Broadus, the dogfather

    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004879/

    😉

    • Justine says:

lol I don’t think any albums had Snoop ‘Dog’ as the name. It’s common sense that it’s Dogg, and not Dog, to add to the “cred” perhaps. On wikipedia it lists over names as “Snoop Doggy Dogg, Uncle Snoop, Tha Boss Dogg”.. no “Dog”.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snoop_Dogg

But I will leave it to you “Snoop Dog” expert. 😉

  27. Sally says:

my goodness woman stop lmao! You will argue about anything I swear.

    • Justine says:

you will defend everything till the end.. aren’t you supposed to be ignoring me?? hmm…

you make a thread and spell the subject topic wrong, someone will say something, chill out.

  28. Patty says:

    Just wow.

  29. trucks12trucks says:

they should remake this with jello instead of cupcakes!

  30. Debbie says:

Um …..where’s the freebie …..I’m a fan of Snoop’s old stuff ….this is crap!

  31. Debbie says:

    Katy Perry, YOU SUCK !

  32. Natalka says:

The Dogg is laughing…. all the way to the bank. That’s cred enuf.

  33. tanghi says:

i think anyone doesnt like him is just jelouos of him
    he is cooooooooooooooool

  34. Mike W says:

@gr1: And another kid judging a bunch of people talking about Snoop on the internet. Super cool-er?

  35. Sally says:

Omg Mike W that make me laugh so hard 😉

  36. selyz_gurl says:

    He’s a dog alright

  37. Missy says:

street cred or not. he’s got some good beats. can’t wait to see him at osheaga in Montreal next weekend !

ps – I always preferred snoop a loop.

  38. Ciel says:

I saw most of the video two days ago and I don’t understand either singer or why that song is popular. North American music has mostly jumped the shark; Asian singers who also sing in English are the music makers now.

MuchMusic used to have some compelling videos. Pity that most management groups seem keen on lifestyle videos or showing rudeness for their marquee bands. Does anyone remember Cliptrip and the show’s 30 min of glory for the featured international artist?

  39. Becca says:

Personally I prefer the original version of the song, without Snoop Dogg. I wish they would just leave some music alone without the need to add someone saying “yo”, “what”, and other variations in the background.

  40. Sally says:

    Martinis, Zucchinis, bikinis, no weenies…

    ya ummn…

  41. Zack says:

My girlfriend is trying to pick between picking up One of the Boys or The Fame. I’m not sure which…

  42. Lisa says:

Snoop Dog has nothing to prove to anyone. I love his sense of humor and what guy loses cred for doing a music video with a whole bunch of half naked girls?? Seriously, I guarantee you any of his homies would trade in their traditional clothes for a cupcake suit and a bunch of hot chicks any day :-)))
