Letters to Santa Via Canada Post Is Open For Receiving

santa1

Kids been bugging you for all the new shiny toys in-store and on tv? Nows the time to get them to finalize their essays on what they’d like and send them off to Santa!

The Santa Letter-writing Program brings joy to children from across Canada and around the world. In addition to giving many children their first introduction to letter writing, this program is also a very important part of the holiday season for thousands of Canada Post employees and retirees.

Currently, more than one million children write to Santa at his ‘NORTH POLE H0H 0H0’ address. Each letter that includes a return address receives a reply from Santa.

More than 11,000 current and retired Canada Post employees, affectionately called Postal Elves, help Santa to ensure that every child’s letter gets an answer in the language in which the letter was written, including Braille (emails are answered in English or French).

Encourage your children and students to write to Santa. It is a fun learning experience that helps teach kids how to write and send a letter. To ensure that children will receive a reply from Santa before Christmas, they should write as early as possible. Remember to include your return address. Teachers are urged to send their classroom letters by December 3.

Although Santa loves to receive letters and drawings, putting cookies and treats in your envelope is not a good idea as they will get crushed and damaged by the time they reach Santa. Santa much prefers to eat his treats on Christmas Eve, so please have your children save them at home for the big day!

I donno if this sounds silly, but do these letters need a stamp like regular post?

  2. Ricki911 says:

Please make sure that it has a return address as well as last name. Its sad to see a child writing a letter and not putting a return address or a last name. In the end the letter gets ripped up and thrown out. Sadly those of us who deliver the mail cant guess where Bob or Katie live having over 800 customers to deliver too.

  5. jeremy says:

I’ve never used a stamp and got responses from the big guy

  6. chloe says:

  7. lil mario says:

  8. KRis says:

you don’t need a stamp? All these years i have been using one like a sucker, lol. I will try without one now.

  9. Onshopper says:

Really?? why worry about the price of a stamp if it makes your child or grandchild happy??

My mother in law works for Canada Post and spends a lot and I mean A LOT of her own time and money organizing schools to come and visit the Canada Post and Santa (which she decorates) and also buys and puts together ALL of the treat bags that children get when they visit. If anyone is wondering, at her office anyways, she gets family (including me 🙂 ) as well as high school students to write responses to children as “Santa” – it is really fun!!

She also organizes the Canada Post part of the parade – it is a lot of work but she has been doing it for years! I tell her every year how appreciative people and of course the children must be for all her efforts!

Thanks to everyone else who gets involved as well! It’s really special 🙂

We live in a small town, and I love the enthusiasm that goes into the return letters. While I know the person who writes back to my kiddos, I also appreciate the love and attention she puts into the “individual” messages at the bottom of the “form letter”. Kudos to all of Santa’s Helpers. You bring such joy to those big and small.

P.S. No stamps needed, some post offices even have a special “Letters to Santa” drop box at kid height 🙂

  12. L. Wilson says:

Last year I did this with my son and he received a form letter that had nothing to do with what he wrote about. There was no individualized note. Also, they spelled his name wrong, even though it was on the original letter.

He was a little disappointed because Santa didn’t say anything about his letter…

But, we kept it anyway. I don’t think I’ll pressure him to do it this year, if he wants to, he will… if not, oh well.

Last year I had my three kids write in, my girls are young enough to believe my son doesn’t but he did so his sisters wouldn’t catch on. All three of them got back just the form letter nothing was written at the bottom. The girls were dissapointed since they had asked santa if he knew frosty and how rudolph was doing. I know when my son was younger there was always stuff written under the form response. They are excited to write this year too, hopefully they will get a better response.

  14. 2jk19 says:

oh my! no personalized letters for some children? I know that the Hamilton post office where my mother in law works instructs everyone to write a response based on what the child has said – that is the whole point if you ask me! And the letters are always hand written and signed in cursive – “Santa” – hopefully there will be more of a rule about that this year!!

My daughter did not get any response from Santa last year 🙁 She handed out her letter during the annual Markham Christmas Parade.

  16. Cecilia says:

I’ve always wanted to volunteer to write letters back as Santa. However, my Google skills have failed me and I’ve yet to learn how.

So, Canuckers, how do I go about volunteering to write letters back to these kiddies?

  17. wendyjane says:

I love this! Winnipegs Santa Claus parade has “elves” collecting letters all along the route tomorrow – makes it even more exciting for the kids.

  18. Ally says:

I love this. My dd has been sending a letter to Santa sibce she was 1. I’d write onher behalf and she’d doodle at the bottom. The 2 letters we received back have seemed personal. They always answer the specific questions we ask, and a comment about her doodle.

I know it’s postal employees that volunteertheir time to write back,

  19. Ally says:

Lol I got cut off… Anyways, wondering if they accept any other volunteers to write back other than employees.

  20. cjunk says:

I too would also like to know how to volunteer to write back to the kids who write letters to Santa. Anyone know if that is something people who work outside of Canada post can do and if so, how?

Walmart and other retailers plan on opening Thanksgiving Day in the States. How long till the will want to be open Christmas too?

“The move is the latest in a creeping commercialism of Thanksgiving, once strictly a holiday for family gatherings, gorging on turkey and pumpkin pie, followed by a nap or walk.”

  22. Melody Halls says:

The year before last I wrote them asking them to change up their letters from santa when kids from the same house write because my kids were getting old enough to notice the letters were the same and last year my kids got two differant letters! Very impressive!

  23. Sally says:

L Wilson, it just sounds like there was an error in your sons letter, dont give up!

  24. suzanne says:

When my kids were little they received personalized letters from Santa but my grandkids get the form letters and they are starting to doubt the big guy. It is too bad that in Brampton that they can make the letters more personal.

  25. Mishelle says:

My daughter has gotten a form almost every year , but one year they wrote a cute note on the bottom and the other year ( which was last year) she got nothing and yes we had a stamp and her address and name on the envelope and the letter (she handed it in at the Santa Clause parade to a postal worker .We live in NORTH BAY ONTARIO by the way .She was sooo disappointed it was heart breaking so I wrote her back and sent it through the mail to her .I just think if nothing else make sure each kid gets a response.I remember years ago when they got a more personalized note.I save all her letters for her but when she is older and look back the only way she will know the difference is the date on them , the letters are that vague and do not refer to anything she ever writes.I am crossing my fingers that “Santa” remembers the children put lots of time and emotion in to those letters and maybe he can make time to put some thought into the ones he sends back .I think it is a wonderful idea regardless and if all they can get is a form letter then that is fine just don’t forget anyone .Merry Christmas all , and to the post office and it’s wonderful workers thank you for doing this anual tradition !

  26. Kerri says:

I love convincing my 3 year old to cut and paste a list even if he sees the mall Santa, I tell him that the mall Santa are his helpers and can’t always remember what you asked Santa for so always double up and mail him a list 🙂

  27. rose says:

my daughter gets a letter from santa almost year or 9 presents from santa

  28. rose says:

    happy holiday and merry christmas

  29. Rylan Nakatsu says:

Thank you Santa for all your hard work

  30. Tracy says:

My daughter never got a hand written letter with a personalized response when she was younger, and now I have a son who has never received that either. I guess they just don’t do that in Winnipeg.
My kids still enjoy the letters although it does make me sad to know that some children have gotten personalized ones….what can you do I guess.
