Not that Katy Perry is the fashion plate for the masses, but a major trend for this Spring, as seen on the March cover of Elle is colour…finally! I’m sick of seeing a sea of black, puffy coats walkin’ ’round.
(Personally, I really try to steer clear of wearing all black…unless of course, I’m at a funeral or work! 🙁 )
In addition to the colour trend is the way it’s worn which is known as colour blocking. Basically, it’s wearing blocks of colour in order to make a fashion statement. There doesn’t seem to be any quick and hard rules to this trend so you can pair rich jewel tones, as pictured above, or even do a monochromatic palette, i.e. different shades of the same colour.
Colour blocking can also be incorporated within a clothing item, for example a dress that is purple on the top and orange on the bottom. The key to colour blocking is boldness, so a top with microscopic stripes doesn’t count!
Warning: This trend is definitely not for the shy, wallflower types! In fact, colour blocking is a much bolder look from the Springs of yesteryear, re: black and white, pastels, wash-out-beige, and other muted tones.
If you want to try out colour blocking this Spring, but aren’t as bold as Katy, take baby steps. Try mixing a bold coloured skirt – corals are also a HUGE trend this season! – with a taupe top or vice-versa. (I find taupe fresher than khaki!) Take some chances this season by wearing some colour!

Until March 6th, McDonald’s is offering their free small coffee deal…again. So being a deal lover, I grabbed my resuable, ceramic coffee cup before I left to run errands.
With my ceramic cup in-hand, I kindly asked the McEmployee if she could put the free caffeine straight into my cup. (I really didn’t think it would be a problem since Starbucks does it and even offers you a $0.10 discount!) She flat-out refused and when I asked her why, she apathetically responded, “I dunno they just said to put it in these (paper) cups and you can throw it out after.”
(I did try to tell the McEmployee that I don’t think the cups are recyclable*, she never responded, and frankly didn’t seem to care.)
Umm…okay, but doesn’t that send out the wrong message that McDonald’s doesn’t give a two-beef-patties-special-sauce-lettuce-cheese about the environment? Due to this promotion, I’m sure that McD’s will be a bit busier giving away free coffees which in turn means there’ll be more waste, so why was my reusable cup refused? Don’t customers use the same cups when they refill their own pop??
Furthermore, it’s definitely not a matter of hygiene as the coffee is dispensed out of a carafe which does not even close to touching the cup at all, so what gives?
I’m not going to come any conclusions right away. Maybe that McEmployee, a middle-aged lady, just hates her job + life + doesn’t give a McMuffin about Mother Earth ’cause her “Canadian experience” sucks soo hard.
I will, however, attempt to bring my reusable cup to another location to see what they’ll say. And if I’m refused again, I’ll follow-up with McDonald’s themselves, come to a final conclusion at that time, and I’ll keep you posted!
Speaking of McDonald’s, for anyone who cares, their radioactive-green Shamrock Shake is BAAACK! I dunno about you, but the colour alone scares the bejesus outta me! Aside from a whole vat of food colouring, what other yummy chemicals are in it??!!
Aside from the colour, I couldn’t drink it even if I wanted to ’cause the Shamrock wouldn’t be the only thing shakin’! I’m lactose-intolerant, especially with these fakey-chemical dairy products…
* D, a ‘green’ friend who works at Starbucks, told me that the paper cups that they use aren’t recyclable because they’re waxed! So I’m guessing the recycling symbol is a sham??
