Here’s a little secret about Shoppers Drug Mart that you probably never knew! We’ve been discussing this on the Canadian Shopping Forum. You can very easily and legally double all the Shoppers Optimum Points you get at Shoppers Drug Mart 😉

Here’s the trick in 2 simple steps:

1. Buy a Shoppers Drug Mart Gift Card and get points on buying the gift card
2. Use the Shoppers Drug Mart Gift Card to buy anything at Shoppers and get points on your purchases AGAIN.

So here’s how this would work. You go and buy say a $100 (or $25 or whatever value)  gift card. You hand the cashier your optimum card, she swipes it, you get 10 optimum points per $1 as usual so that’s 1000 optimum points. You then use your gift card as a cash card to pay for your future Shoppers Drug Mart purchases and you get another 1000 points from these purchases! So you’d be getting double the points all the time!

The nice thing about Shoppers Drug Mart’s Gift Card is that it’s like a Cash Card which means that you can use it on multiple purchases over many days and months so it’s not something you have to use at once or on one purchase.

Note that this strategy does not work on x10, x15, x20 or bonus optimum point days.

I was very saddened to find out that S&R Department Store in Kingston, Ontario is closing down 🙁

S&R is a local retailer that has been a part of Kingston’s downtown for over 50 years.  S&R symbolized the ability of smaller businesses and stores to survive the monstrous merciless national chains.

Although S&R was never a favourite store of mine, it had a dazzlingly unique style and character.  From the large creepy elevator that was operated by some strange (but very friendly) guy, to the shelves full of one of a kind items that may have been there for years; S&R was truly different. Almost everyone who’s lived in Kingston has a memory of S&R whether they’re local Kingstonians, Queen’s students and probably some Kingston Pen (light security) inmates. Although I endorse change and progress in life  I think some things should never disappear. I’m sad to see  S&R go and see 80 employees lose their jobs.

S&R will start its final closing clearance sale on Wednesday April 22nd, 2009.

The fine folks over at RobotNine have posted up an nifty collection of photos of strange McDonald’s locations from around the world. The real highlight? This McDonald’s in Piteå, Sweden opened the world’s first (and to the best of my knowledge, only) snowmobile-specific drive thru.

While you might not think there’d be much call for that, Piteå is in the Arctic Circle. You’re likely to find a few more snowcats than Prius’ that far north.

A little further research (courtesy of American Snowmobiler Magazine) shows that the project was short-lived. While the drive thru opened in 2002, the restaurant actually closed in 2007. There’s a pretty good chance that a major Swedish fast food chain may take over the facility, which means that hungry snowmobilers can still get their burger fix without shutting down their engines in the cold.
