Toronto to Ottawa to Montreal Earthquake – Did you feel it?

Earthquake Toronto Ottawaquake_drop

This is the strongest earthquake I’ve ever personally experienced… pretty scary feeling. I can’t imagine how people feel  in major earthquakes.

Did you feel the earthquake?

See the crop of a traffic graph on the right? We had a noticeable blip (as in the drop in this blog’s traffic) just at the same time as the earthquake, around 13:41 ET, followed by a spike about half an hour later. Neat.

I felt it, I was at work and all of a sudden the rack of clothes and toys started swaying and it sounded like the ceiling was coming in! I immediately called my husband who is about 10 minutes from where I work (wasaga Beach) and he said he didn’t notice anything! I thought I must have been going crazy until I heard a radio report! Good to know that I am not going crazy 🙂

  23. Christina says:

Yes! Right in downtown. I’ve been in ones similar, although I think the 5.5 rating is probably the highest I’ve experienced (can’t remember though).

  27. Kathie says:

Yes, we felt it in Orleans, east end of Ottawa. Saw the walls of my house shake from inside. Phones are down. My cell phone says “emergency only” as if it knows the lines are jammed.

  28. Katia says:

I am in Midland, Ontario, which is on Georgian Bay (2 hours north of Toronto) and I felt it. My computer monitor was violently shaking and it made me a little nauseous.

  42. Mi says:

It was totally unexpected and scary. I really thought my house was gonna collapse and I’d die… 😛 I never thought I’d actually experience an earthquake – no warning whatsoever. But then I could only imagine what people in real high-scaled earthquakes feel.

  43. Marion says:

I definitely felt in down here in the Niagara Pensinsula. We are mid way between the two lakes and mid way between Hamilton and Niagara Falls.
It was fairly mild, in fact, at first I thought it was a big gust of wind, but it seemed to keep going forever, although I’m sure it lasted less than a minute. I’m glad others have confirmed it though because I’m sure no one would have believed me otherwise!

i’m in St. Catharines…15 minutes from Niagara Falls and I felt it! I was lying on my couch and it started shaking and the lamp on the table was swaying back and forth. I thought at first a truck was going by or a boat in the canal hit the wall then I realized it must be an earthquake! I’ve felt three now here in my life..this by far the strongest.

  50. val says:

I’m in Waterloo, and my computer screen was wobbling and work chair was rolling… The whole dept. was in the hallway in 10 seconds!

  51. matrix82 says:

I’m in alliston, ontario, about two hours outside of Toronto and felt it.

I thought the gas station down the road exploded.

It shook the cupboards in the office. I went home, and it had opened a couple cupboard doors and slightly moved some empty cardboard boxes in the storage cupboard.

  52. matrix82 says:

I also have friends in St. Catherine’s that have felt it

  53. abbasgirl says:

I’m near downtown Ottawa. Nothing like being on the first floor of a 6 floor apartment building knowing the whole thing could come crashing down. It sounded like an explosion at first. I thought there was a bomb or something but then it just kept shaking quite hard for about 20 seconds. It took my cat an hour to come out from under my bed!

  54. Tracey says:

I’m in Kitchener today and I really felt it here! I was sitting on a couch with my laptop on my lap and the whole house started to roll and shake. My laptop kept going one way while I went the other (back and forth) so it was really noticeable. It lasted a long time (died down a little and then picked back up)…probably 30 seconds or so. Really quite a ride!

  55. LaylaS says:

We felt it in Chateauguay Quebec, my screen was shaking,it was scary!!!

  56. Jerry Hung says:

Waterloo & Mississauga, Ontario both felt it (west of Toronto)

    Except me…

Anyway, earthquake here is nothing compared to Asia, wait till you are on high floors and see the chandelier shaking, twice in 10 minutes…

  57. Jinny says:

    Definitely felt the building shake!

I work down the street from the Metro Convention center where G20 will be held, for a second, I thought a bomb has went off near by or something! But then second thought, the world leaders are not even here yet, bombing now would defeat their purpose..

  58. Brody says:

Felt in Markham, north of Toronto. We just assumed it was from renovations on the floor beneath us…until we saw the crowds of people standing outside in the parking lot!

  59. Cheap says:

    I slept through it.

  60. agatha says:

YES, my desk was shaking and lots of boxes just fell down… I had no idea Canada had earthquakes, this was the 1st one for me!

  61. MissDayle says:

    Pickering Ontario was rockin too!

  62. Felt it at my workplace in Ancaster, ON. My immediate thought when I felt it was “must be an earthquake” because it lasted a lot longer than the usual rumbles of heavy-trucks going through or workers who frequently do patch-work on our building. It lasted pretty damn long and although not a lot in my office was disturbed from the shake, it was probably the longest (and first) earthquake I’ve ever felt before!

  63. sweet says:

Felt it in North York, Ontario. Table’s were shaking for several minutes.

  64. Sally says:

We were watching a movie and I passed out, so nope nothing here haha!

  65. minimusiclover says:

Yeah, I felt it too, i was at CVH…and then everyone was like…what?

  66. ollen says:

i felt it and it’s normal… very mild… i live in mississauga… it was not the first time, because backhome i’ve experienced 7.5 in scale and there was an aftershock in the evening and on the following day…. that’s the scariest and the strongest earthquake i’ve experienced… good that our house is a bungalow style and nothing to be afraid…

  67. moongalz says:

That was intense.. I was in my bf’s apt. my laptop and a few things fell over! I thought the building was falling, because our building is a step from being condemed. I was unfortunately naked.. i ran down the apt in the dark because our apt also has problems with hydro!!

  68. Tara says:

    I didn’t feel it.

  69. NurseJenn says:

I live in Kitchener ON and I was coming back from the dentist on the bus and my bf called me all in a panic. He said that his boss was saying that his desk was shaking, but he did not feel it.( He works in Milton ON) I thought he was joking and said if it happened again to stand in a door frame and the response I got was I am so running outside if it happens again. So as I was still on the bus going near downtown I start to see tons of people from the courthouse, OW and buildings like that so I called him back and said that I believed him… I talked to my best friend who was in a government building that got evacuated and she thought it was a bomb threat. I can’t believe that some people felt it and others did not. I hope that everyone that was affected is OKAY!!!

  70. NurseJenn says:

Oh and something that I just thought of… I was watching the OC yesterday
( I never watch it) and they had an earthquake ?!?! freaky

  71. adora says:

I’m in Brampton, Ontario – west of Toronto. I felt it, but my brother didn’t. I’m at 17th floor, very mild, nothing fell down. It was like I’m in a parked car while heavy trucks drove right next to me. It only lasted for a minute.
I was worried because I thought it was my new medication. So glad that it’s real!

  72. SilentAngel says:

hmm i live in mississauga and i didnt feel a thing

    Earthquake rocks Quebec, Ontario

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake has hit Quebec, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, with tremors reportedly felt as far away as Windsor, Boston and Cleveland.

The first tremor hit at 1:41 p.m. ET Wednesday south of Lake Echo, in an area 61 kilometres north of Ottawa near the Ontario-Quebec border, according to the U.S.G.S.

Buildings in Toronto and Ottawa were evacuated in the minutes following the tremors. Parliament Hill was also evacuated, while windows at Ottawa’s city hall shattered.

The Ontario Provincial Police reported no injuries. The Ottawa fire department said it was overwhelmed with false alarms.

“Earthquakes across [this part of] Canada are definitely rare, but we do have them,” said Johanna Wagstaffe, a CBC seismologist and meteorologist.

“There are small fault lines along Lake Erie and Lake Ontario” and a “relatively active fault line that runs parallel to the St. Lawrence Valley,” she said just minutes after the quake.

The last major earthquake on that fault line measured 5.4-magnitude in 1998, she said.

    Office workers shaken

Kathleen Sullivan was working on the eighth floor of an office in downtown Toronto when the quake hit.

“It was very peculiar because we could actually see the plants on our window shelf shaking.

“By the time we gathered in the hall and figured out it wasn’t our imagination, it stopped. But it was easily a minute of things shaking.”

The quake was felt as far south as Windsor, Ont., along the Canada-U.S. border.

“I was just laying in bed …. and the bed just started to move side to side … just gently,” said Darren Bonnici, who lives on the 10th floor of an apartment building along the city’s riverfront.

“Sort of, almost like a mother would rock a baby in a crib,” said Bonnici, adding the feeling lasted for about five seconds. “I thought right away it must have been an earthquake.”

The earthquake was felt across Montreal and in the city’s outer regions, including the Laurentians and the Chateauguay Valley.

Marcel Maheux said he felt the ground move under his house in the Laurentians just after 1:45 p.m.

“It was big enough that my house and windows shook hard,” said Maheux, who lives in Riviere-Rouge. “It lasted at least 15 seconds, and it passed, but it was very, very strong.”

Hugh Maynard, who lives in Ormstown, southwest of Montreal, said his house was “rocking back and forth.”

Montreal police said no damage has been reported.

  74. LOVEly says:

I’m in Barrie, we felt it here. Lamps were swaying, whole house shook, i thought it was the construction at first! Is there a bigger one expected? Usually tremors are followed by quakes i thought, ive never experienced one in canada before!

  95. Chad says:

Yes, I felt the earthquake at exacly 1:44 pm today and it only lasted a few seconds. I felt it in the south shore of montreal. it was very small and my house was shaking a little. I guess in the south shore it did not feel like a magmnitude of 5.5 but it was sure scary becasue i never felt a earth quake before. I can not imagine larger earthquakes. 102. Ashling says:

    Felt it here in London.

  103. Love Junkie says:

Wonder if they will send out a tsunami warning for the G20’s fake lake?

  107. amy says:

Here in Richmond Hill, I felt the apartment building swaying a little bit, but really nothing serious. Nothing fell off the shelf. Nothing in the cupboard was making noise. My crystal chandelier wasn’t swinging. My cat wasn’t even afraid.

Last time we had a tornado in Markham, my cat heard the roaring sound outside and hid inside my closet. This time, nothing.

  108. Shopoholic says:

I felt it here in London… I was actually at the gym signing up and was being asked how committed to going I was….lol

  116. private pleasures says:

Felt it in Chatham, Ontario. Desk was swaying and computer wobbling sligthly on desk. It did startle me and I went out in the hallway ASAP! I had experienced something similar about 12-15yrs ago. As we don’t expect earthquakes it always tends to be unsettling especially if not everyone was aware of it and you don’t get immediate comfirmation of what happened.

  117. keri says:

Last thing I ever imagined happening in Ottawa. At first I thought that my fourth cup of coffee was finally kicking in, but then realized (as the building was shaking) what was happening. Just read this online (should be interesting for those living in Ottawa:

A geological fault line runs throught the Carleton Campus as can be seen by the rapids in the Rideau River. This fault line accounts for the original steepness of the stairs in the UniCentre prior to the 2005/2006 renovations.

  118. Ang says:

“Wonder if they will send out a tsunami warning for the G20’s fake lake?”

    That’s too funny!! LOL 🙂

  119. Sunny says:

Yes, we feel it. I was in the washroom, when it starts, I thought my head is spinning and when my wife shouted then we understand it is earthquake. I came to living room, Sofa was spinned and we ran to balcony, all the stuff’s are spinning. We are living at 8th floor in High rise building in Montreal. We ran outside with our kids. I think, it is about 20 to 30 seconds and our worst experience.

  120. bambinoitaliano says:

One of our co-worker felt it and ask me and another co-worker. We just dismissed her and said: Nah, It’s just the street car…. LOL

  121. ScotchandBoots says:

Felt it here in Burlington, too. I was in the kitchen washing dishes when I actually felt the room begin to sway. It was a bizarre sensation–at first I almost thought the cupboards and counter were about to pull away from the wall. Hubby was at the computer–he started hugging the monitor it pretty tight when it started bouncing.

Pretty scary because we live on the top floor of a high rise. Would that mean we would be the first to die or the last? Thank goodness it only lasted for 20 seconds.

  122. jay the devil nevill says:

i live in cambridge ontario and there was slight movement but not much at all

  130. stella ella olla says:

Felt it in Petawawa (Ottawa Valley), too. At first I thought it was a heavy construction vehicle working a street over from us, but then the shaking intensified. Wild.

  146. Tina says:

We felt it in Oshawa. We live behind the airport and I thought an army helicopter or plane just flew over us dealing with the “G” summit. The kitchen cupboards banged open/shut and when we went outside, everything was all calm…errie!

  147. Nucleii says:

@ Sporeo: New England’s in USA. Its near the border. This earth quack was also felt in the state that is close to this area.

I was openig my fridge and saw it shaking and thought it was my sister in the next room kicking it or something then I saw she was sleeping and had my friend called and told me what happened. This was not the first one for myself but i did not feel it from the previous one in 1998

I personally didn’t feel a thing in Burlington, but my coworker in the next room said she felt it, didn’t know what it was at first till I commented about it. (i knew because twitter exploded with comments about it)

  149. maddie2008 says:

Yup, I felt it. Where our business is located here in Chatham, it has the train tracks behind it, so I originally thought the damn train was going too fast through town and was making everything rumble, but I realized something was up right after that, cause it wasn’t time for the train to come through.

  150. Jenn says:

  156. Shawty says:

BFD! I don’t understand why people are making such a big deal about this earthquake and for that matter, blaming it on the G20 – really and truly? How on earth are those two related (R-E-T-A-R-D)? It was only for 5-10 seconds! Some people got sent home from work because the quake “stressed” them out. Such drama queens. Try living in a developing country and you’ll see how people go on with their lives over something so miniscule.

  157. Irish_Girl says:

Totally felt it here in Ottawa. Thought my office building was collapsing… Got to leave early for an earthquake holidy. Gotta love it when no one gets hurt and you get to go home early!

  158. Nicole says:

  161. vibrantflame says:

“Try living in a developing country and you’ll see how people go on with their lives over something so miniscule.”

Yes, most people from a developing country would get over something like that quite quickly. Mostly because they have much bigger fears, like starving to death, or they have actual natural disasters to fear. In reality, the hardships some people go through on a daily basis make anything that we think is “hard” pale in comparison. However, that does not mean that what we go through in developed countries is insignificant. And calling people drama queens because they were scared over something that IS a big deal to us in this country is just silly.

  162. Heather says:

They evacuated buildings here in Windsor.

  163. Marie says:

I was watching a movie and felt my couch move…thinking someone was in my house I got up looked around then saw the door was locked so I REALLY was alone…lol Later on that afternoon other parents at my kids school told me about it…okay good. Thought I was going crazy!

  166. Audrey says:

We didn’t feel the quake, we were heading from Petawawa to Niagara Falls. Ironically, I lived in S. California for 11 years and have experienced a few quakes as a kid. I thought someone was rocking our bunk bed at the time during one quake (over 6).
