Vancouver’s Kissing Couple: Hoax?

kissing_couple_vancouver

All over the internet an interesting picture is circulating that was taken at the riot last night ( that obviously wasn’t because of hockey 😉 ) Apparently the couple were heavily kissing during the riot.  There is lots of  speculation that the photo was photoshopped  or staged. Some say that the tear gas made them randy.  What do you think?

The first thing that popped into my head was “who wears short shorts?”

CBC is on the hunt for the couple, click here for the full article.

    Make love, not war. 🙂

  2. albug says:

I have seen this picture with two dogs as well…..stupid!

  3. Cee says:

Did you read that article? Because it says it isn’t photoshopped, or staged…it was shot by a Getty photographer and there is more than 1 angle, and more than 1 shot. This site needs an editor, jeez.

  4. Sally says:

Since when does one article speak for the whole internet? I was speaking of tons of other articles I went through. I chose one to post. There is a a lot of speculation around the photo.

    Please calm down. “jeez”

  5. Kelly says:

I love this picture! I think it’s really sweet <3

Now, EVERYBODY! Who wears short shorts? She wears short shorts. If she dares wear short shorts…(thats all I can remember)

  6. C says:

I think this is very sweet. Odd that they’d do it in the middle of a road, but still very sweet.

I was told the girl in the photo was stabbed in the back, is that true?

  7. airguy says:

who cares if its fake or not.. its something positive to look at after such a disgrace in YVR.. its cute and romantic 🙂

PS, dont p/o sally.. you will just get it 3x as bad back..

  8. jjenny says:

Who cares? It was just a couple kissing. Will the gov make that illegal too? Stupid news just making up a story.

  9. Abby1 says:

Lol, now I can’t stop thinking about those shorts! So short!

    But yes, not staged.

Just got back from a trip to BC and saw some interesting things after games…including an oral gesture right on a street corner in broad daylight.

  10. melhulme says:

Pretend… I know id sure as heck be running if there were cops surronding me with batons!!! But i guess some people need thier fix :p

  11. Karen says:

They’re not kissing. The girl is injured, he’s trying to help her. This has been stated through a few different news sources.

Your sarcasm is kind of offensive – with the ‘obviously not about hockey’ bit. I was there, I couldn’t get to my car to get out of the city because the floor below of the parkade it was in was set on fire – multiple cars up in flames. I was about 100 feet from the first car that was flipped/burned, and I can tell you with 100% certainty that those who started this were NOT canucks fans. They came dt halfway through the game, and were walking the streets before the game was over with bandanas covering their mouths and bags of crowbars and kerosene in their hands. I’m not saying some fans didn’t join in (1 drunken idiot for every 1,000, give or take, and mostly idiotic kids) – but the police have gone on record as saying that these are anarchists who are KNOWN to police who protest and cause dangerous disturbances all the time. What kind of hockey fan carries a molotov cocktail around? None.

It was terrifying to be a part of, and heartbreaking when it died down. My home, the city I love, was literally rubble and ash. Please stop making light of a situation that is much too serious to laugh at. I know others are doing it – but why join the fray? If you’re going to repost something, do so from a reliable news source. Tear gas does not make you randy, it burns you. Just like fire, and the person I watched quite literally burn alive last night. It’s not something to laugh about or make uneducated comments about. None of this is.

  12. C says:

I just found confirmation that the poor girl was stabbed, his hand is on her stomach applying pressure to the wound. So very very sad.

  13. Rick says:

Instead asking if it is a hoax, why didn’t you do more search on the picture?
If you investigated it further, you would have known was taken by a professional photographer, Richard Lam. Richard Lam is a freelance Photojournalist. Why would a professional photographer fake a photo since his reputation is at stake.

  14. Natalka says:

Apparently it’s a skirt hiked up. Conflicting reports on whether she was hurt or not.
    ——
confirmed by Sarah Lache, who works for Comcast Sports Chicago
Scott Jones and Alex Thomas are the kissing couple.

According to Nine News, he is from Austrialia and she’s from Vancouver. The stand-up comic who was performing in the city, had recently started dating Thomas.

  15. Casey says:

I don’t know guys, that’s kinda REALLY romantic! Seriously!!! *blush*

  16. vibrantflame says:

Clearly, they ARE kissing. However, supposedly she was injured and he was trying to comfort her (supposedly they are dating).

Interesting how one picture can cause so much speculation!

  17. Supafly says:

A witness told the Vancouver Sun the couple were run over by two riot police officers: “The girl who was knocked over landed head first on the pavement with her boyfriend landed partially on top of her,” he said. “She was in visible pain, crying, but the two officers gave them a parting shove and moved on. Bystanders went to make sure she was OK.” [Source: gardian.co.uk]
What i don’t get is why the actual fans just stood there and watched the whole thing unravel. From the footage that is circulating, these rioting idiot were certainly outnumbered so I’m wondering why the ‘spectators’ didn’t just jump them. It’s such a bad scene, so sad to see things like this happen.

  18. Winue says:

    clearly its a hoax.

IF the girl was injured, and there were police around, do you think they would walk away from an injured person?

look at the ground to the left of the couple… the ground looks different, blurry almost, compared to the rest of the pic.

  19. Samantha C says:

I love this Blog and how worked up people get over something like this =)

  20. DCH says:

It’s not fake, this picture was aired on CBC while it was happening. Although there a lot of photoshops out there this one is not.

  21. Mlongboat says:

I think the police may leave an injured person. They were getting injured themselves. Some police were hospitilized, several suffered HUMAN bites! GROSS! There first priority is to control the crowd to prevent further destruction. I’m assuminging (im not in law enforcement or a paramedic)that they have to clear the area before paramedics would even be allowed access.

  22. Sarah says:

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2011/06/17/vancouver-kissing-couple.html

The photo is a Ghetty Images photo, taken professionally. The guy is from Australia. The girl is his Canadian girlfriend. They were in the arena watching the game, when they left, they got caught in what was going on outside. The girl was in between the riot police and protesters, and was knocked down by the police, the boyfriend comforted her. Photographer snapped a shot. That’s it.

  23. bhlombardy says:

The photo is real… the situation is not…

They arent making out. She had fallen to the ground and he is helping her.

  24. smartypants_007 says:

Updates on the photo posted by the Vancouver sun – the guy’s father outted him on FB:
    http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Love+among+ruins+Details+about+couple+Vancouver+Riot+Kiss+photo+revealed/4959172/story.html

  25. Tabetham says:

Wow people just love to take things and run with them lol
I just watched an interview with the guy’s father on CBC. Aparently the girl had been knocked down during the riot and was upset and he was comforting her and gave her a kiss and a photographer happened to get a shot of it.
They aparently didn’t even know they had been photographed.

  26. Karen says:

Winue – are you really that naive? I saw someone ask a cop how to get to the hospital, he said get out of my way, go bleed somewhere else. The only thing they cared about (whether rightfully or wrongfully) was dispersing the crowd.

To those asking why people didn’t step in… They did. Then, they were circle beaten for the pleasure. Those taking photos of the instigators got it the worst – one is in the hospital and not expected to make it at the moment. Don’t judge people for not stepping in when you have no idea what it was like to actually be there.

  27. pink_panda says:

here’s another picture of the couple with by standers around. it seems the poor girl was hurt and her bf was trying to comfort her.

  28. kingy says:

I read somewhere that they were claiming that the police knocked her down, probably deserved. Shouldn’t of been there in the first place. Being part of the crowd is participating in the riots.

  29. MyCupcake says:

Media reports say the pair are 29-year-old Australian Scott Jones and his girlfriend Canadian Alex Thomas.

  30. shennig says:

We’ll all find out the truth sooner or later. Sounds like absolute chaos and mayhem, and based on reports I’ve read online the number of injuries and damage is far greater than what has been officially released.

  31. Nic says:

There were lots of people who stood up to looters and rioters, that just doesn’t make the news like the angry violent pictures.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1HP-MctR0U . Possibly NSFW (I don’t have sound). It’s one of four different people who stood in front of cars or businesses to prevent trashing/looting.

And what a lot if people did the next day:

Sally (and to all the other SmartCanuck writers):

You guys should really weed out the arrogant whiny people who nitpick and question your blog entries. Some people here take everything so seriously.

  33. Catlady says:

Those are panties. If I’m ever in that position I would not want my photos all over the web, no matter how artistic. I don’t have body image issues and hubby says I have a very nice bum, but still…I like my privacy

  34. AppleCor says:

The photographer, Rich Lam, is one of my hubby’s best friends. The photo was definitely not staged, although he says the pair were definitely making out and he wondered why at the time. If you read articles with the couple, they say she was knocked over and he was helping her. She was not stabbed.

  35. jaxx says:

with everything going on there that night she is lucky she wasnt assaulted.

  36. jason says:

well lets not kid ourselves about some cops esp riot cops. Did we forget about Toronto last summer and all the beatings and whatnot that the cops did to innocent people ?? How many cops have been charged cause they were caught on video?? without video or photos they wouldve gotten away with it. I would say 50% of cops are good. Either way of the photo i am sure there were many people wrongfully assualted by cops. But they are there to be you know what and dont care what happens.

  37. Fran says:

what the hell is wrong with short shorts??? If you have the figure show it off! I don’t know where ur from, but in Ontario everyone’s wearing them

  38. sam says:

Who is DUMB enough to think this s real is needing a head check. TOTALLY PHOTOSHOPPED. And so what if she wears short shorts??? She is like 20. Rock it while u got it I say!

  39. sam says:

FREAK!! IF I WAS A WOMAN AND 20 I WOULD WEAR A BIKINI EVER CHANCE I HAD OR GOT LOL!!!!!!!

  40. sam says:

WEIRDO! IF I WAS THAT GURL I WOULD TOTALLY ENjoy my minutes of fame!!! Who doesn’t want to be HELD by a strong Prince CHARMING LOL!!!!!!!! I wish I had a Prince Charming to cup my testicles.

  41. Lily says:

Well , It makes me feel like the drama , they are drasticly kissing in such a situation is like they are making a movie .

  42. Karen says:

L6941… It IS serious. This isnt something to make light of. Many people were seriously injured, and some of us watched that.

  43. Karen says:

Just know that what you saw on tv was pretty heavily censored.

  44. Sally says:

They now have interviews with them, its sad what happened for sure.

  45. Lori says:

I know that they finally identified the couple. But there is only one thing I personally disagree with. He has said that he was comforting her when they were knocked down. To me after an incident like that all that is required is a peck on the cheek. To me this isn’t that, this is making out.

  46. SuperM says:

I think it is awful and unfortunate. Karen – sorry to hear that you were arond at the time. it must have been scary. From the video footage I have seen I am just surprised at how many people just stand by and watch. Yes, I am sure that there were many great people trying to help out but I would just get the hell out of the way so the police can arrive and target the real offenders. I dont want to be in the way to get hurt by these idiots or the cops trying to do their job. Sure maybe some cops are jerks – but if you are just standing around… you are in the way.

If they were messing with my car – have at it – that is why I leave nothing in my car and why I pay insurance. Sux but I’m not messing with crazy people.

  47. Teenah says:

This is the most romantic…. I don’t care what everyone else says, for him to kiss her and make sure she is okay before running off to safety speaks volumes of his character…. Now if only He was here & I was single.. HAHA Jk, I love my hubby 🙂

  48. Wilson says:

I think the myriad of hilarious comments on this blog in regards to the picture are more entertaining than the real story behind it.

    hehehe short shorts.

  49. Karen says:

People DID try and help. They account for most of the critically injured. Check out videos of that – there are plenty. As for those standing around – some really were just standing there, but when you see building-to-building walls of angry people coming at you, what do you do? there’s nowhere to run, all you really CAN do is stand to the side and try and avoid fireworks, balls of fire, shards of glass, molotov cocktails, bricks, etc.

  50. L6941 says:

Karen, I was referring to those who were picking on Sally’s choice of words in her article. Lots of readers here are so self-entitled that they need to display their arrogance when they are just readers of this site. Humility is a good thing.

Of course what happened in Vancouver was serious. People were injured.

  51. jason says:

comeon people you didnt see this coming ? if they lost or won they would still do it and people should know enough to stay clear like the g-20 dont go down there you know what could happen . Do not feel sorry

  52. Read says:

My brother came out of a restaurant after eating dinner after the game. His girlfriend pulled out her camera to take a photo. (Not smart to do, as they soon realized) A group of rioting girls saw her and and attacked her for her camera and purse. When my brother turned his girlfriend away, a man came at him from the side and whacked him in the face with a pipe. My brother will have plastic surgery tomorrow to repair a nose broken in 2 places and a crushed cheek bone. He has never had a physical fight in his entire life. He’s 6’7” and known by friends and family as a gentle giant. Who cares about random kissing and property damage???!!! Thank-you to the two men who found him after the attack and half-carried him to St. Paul’s Hospital and to the couple who pulled his girlfriend out of the hands of rioting teen-aged girls.

  53. Kyla says:

I do not look down upon Anarchists and their views, but I really do wish they would be more organized so that innocent civilians wouldn’t be harmed. Then again that might be an ironic statement. But they are contributing to the idea that all anarchists go around destroying everything. Anarchism is a political view.

  54. kaila says:

i heard that she was beign pushed and had fallen to the ground and after people cleared the way her boyfriend seen her crying and to make her feel better kissed her, it was on cnn lastnight .. thats what the couple said. ” all it was , was a simple kiss”

  55. Natalka says:

Video released showing couple starting to run away with the rest of the crowd, but get trampled by officers. Two officers stay with them, and someone else stops by to help them.
