Where to find cheap clothing:

Clothing is one thing we like to indulge in sometimes. We want those new jeans with that gorgeous new sweater. Right, ladies? Well, let’s face it – clothing can be expensive. The good news is, it doesn’t have to be. Here are some great places that you can find clothes so cleap, you will never go back to paying full price!

1. Ebay – Ebay has some fantastic deals when it comes to clothing. Yo can search for specific items in single pieces or in large lots.

2. Second Hand/Thrift Stores – If you’re not looking for anything specific you can stop in one of these great stores and browse through the racks. You are bound to find some things that you like and the prices are unbeatable!

3. Kijiji/Craigslist – Kind of like Ebay, these websites allow you to search for the type of clothing you are looking for and if there is a match in your location you can go to pick the clothing up. No shipping or paying with your credit card. Just pay with cash and that’s it!

while i agree in general, i find outlet stores and sale racks have the best prices on clothes for me…i haven’t tried kijiji but most of the time on ebay shipping is outrageous and i find value village has gotten expensive over the past few years…however, the goodwill doesn’t jack up their prices as much 🙂 maybe we should add yard sales to the list too? i also find costco has great clothing prices..especially for pants (way cheaper than the cheaper stores like walmart/zellers etc)

yes, sale racks are great as well as yard sales!

i agree that value village has become expensive. i hardly ever buy clothing there – i get mine at goodwill.

Am I missing something? Arent these posts common knowledge?

I prefer buying from stores over eBay, simply because I can try them on. Fitting is important to me.

Should also consider $/wear. e.g. Old Navy tees cost $15 each, while Banana Republic tee cost $40. I often find B.R. to be better deal because I can wear them at least 10 times longer. Old Navy tees usually wears out within 15-20 washes. There are key pieces that we should not mind investing more money on, like good jeans and basic tees.

(Is it just me, or the clothing quality were better in the 90’s? I am still wearing clothes from before 2000. They are still nice and soft, but the clothes I bought from the same store last year is already worn out!)

Don’t forget sample sale! If you are size 4-6, you can get good quality clothes with less than quarter of retail price at trunk show/sample sales. There aren’t as many high designer trunk show in Canada as in the US, but there are a lot of up-and-coming or student designers with interesting samples in Toronto. It is a great place to find something nice for special occasions.

I prefer stores as well. And I will not go to Craigslist. Everytime I do it sends viruses to my computer

It is not only ‘ladies’ who like to buy lots of clothes — even though this is the common myth.

In my personal experience, men often buy alot of clothes too, but their clothes and accessories are often (misleadingly) referred to as ‘gear’. ( :

  7. Sally says:

Yes I agree there is a lot of men who love to shop for ‘gear’
I know my husband usually ditches me in the store to check out the men ”gear”

And hes just as bad for buying something spendy then never wearing it hehehe

yeah i’m not too sure either where these posts are coming from but they seem to get everyone chatting anyways!

Value Village is ridiculous now … you pay the same as a sale rack at a store with NEW clothes. What is the deal with them anyways?

  9. Bored says:

There’s a blog and forum that you can get your fill of posts for people that like to chat and stuff.

It would be better if something new can be introduccd, rather than common knowledge or babblespeak.

Ebay?? Really?? Is this news to anyone???

  10. ILMK says:

I know!! Value Village isn’t much of a value anymore. 🙁

    Well…

    Other ideas, for different situations:

    – Freecycle: you won’t find everything there, but sometimes, you can be surprised!

    – if you live near the border, american stores are selling clothes (and other things!) for less than our stores. Your trip has to be “worth” it though… don’t drive 3 hours and pay $60 of gas to save $2… (you can look at the websites and “plan” your trip)

    – schools: if you need something special, or alterations, you can check with the schools around if they have some clothes design program; often, students are really happy to have a “real” customer and the prices are great.

    – Value Village is not so good anymore; I mean… if I can find something new in the clearance section at Winners for cheaper, why would I choose the used one?

    – I agree with the quality thing too… for things you have to wear daily, a little bit more quality and $ is sometimes really worth it. Also, to wear a dress once for something special, with matching shoes!, if you pay too much, you won’t “recover” what you spent… rent, or limit the damages by buying something less expensive, or that you can wear again in a different situation.

    – When you buy clothes, think about the maintenance too… Dry Clean only adds $$$

    – This is less common with everything being made in China, but you can also visit Company Stores for good deals.

    – Ask your friends to bring the clothes they don’t want anymore to your swap party; this can be a lot of fun… and this is free 🙂

The only issue I have found with ebay/craigslist/kijiji is the goods offered are usually grey market items, but other than that it’s great.

I think these posts are a nice idea. There are still a lot of people who may not know about these things, or they may be only slightly familiar with the sites and not realize you can buy clothes from them. And even if it is common knowledge, it’s still nice to read and chat about.

I agree that Value Village is getting expensive. I haven’t bought clothes for myself there in ages. Maybe on 50% off day. I usually only go there now to shop for clothes or toys for my son.

I think I will see where my local Goodwill is…maybe they will have better pricing and selection then Value Village.

I would love to shop on EBay but I find by the time you add in the shipping most stuff is not worth it.

  15. rachel says:

Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth on value villge, becoming WAY too expensive, i have e-mailed head office and made a comment to my local store supervisor but the attitude seems to be if you don’t like it don’t shop, so i don’t…

I absolutely love kijiji for baby/kids clothes. I’ve met a few moms who’s kids are a bit older than mine and they will email me to come over and let me have the pick of the litter before they start posting ads. I get great clothes for my girls and they save alot of time posting ads.

As for value village. Im not a big fan. They are a FOR profit organization. I prefer to donate and buy from the Salvation Army Thrift Store. That being said I do go to V.V %50off sales. They do usually have a bigger and better selection.

By far the best value for nice clothing is Joe Fresh at Loblaws. It is incredible what you get for the money.

  18. ninamaryjoe says:

I buy my cloths new but I always check the clearance racks first. Its amazing what you can find marked down 50-90%. It does take a bit more time and patience to sift through the stuff but its worth it when you find something for a great price that fits. I only buy full price If its something I need right away or for a special occasion.

  19. mr. friendly says:

Value Village is nearly worthless these days. the only things worth buying there are obscure halloween costumes from the 80s. there’s no reason to buy grungy jeans encrusted in a homeless guy’s cum when you can buy a new one at a lower price from wal-mart.

Yesterday I went by my local Fairweather store where they were having a huge sale, up to 80% off. Things like turtle necks for $10 and other good deals. I happened to take a look at their damaged rack because I saw a dress I liked there and found an awesome Beacher’s Brook sweater with a split along the seam (an easy fix) that was marked down to $10 from $68. When I took it to the cashier she reduced it by a further $5 because of the sale.

Following that I went over to Jayset, this is at Jackson Square in Hamilton. Jayset is an outlet store for Tanjay and Smart Set with fabulous prices. I’ve previously gotten black dress pants for work there on a buy one, get one half price sale when they were marked down to $11, so one for $11 and one for $5.50 and really good quality too!

Anyway, in their markdown racks I found a fabulous sweater that I almost bought back in March for $40 but decided not to because it wasn’t very flattering on me. I’ve since lost 15 pounds and the exact same sweater looks awesome now and was marked down to $8! Unfortunately the Tanjay sale items tend to be mostly size 8 which I am not. But there are pants in all sizes and some things in all the size categories, but the tops tend to be more of the Tanjay selection which is what my senior citizen mother wears, so not to my taste. Still, two awesome sweaters for $13, I’m more than pleased!

Old Navy end of season sale racks!! Last year at the end of summer I got a bunch of 99 cent tank tops and $2-$5 shirts, some great deals – just takes some digging and you have to get there before everything gets picked over.

I find the best place to buy ladies casual pants/jeans is Mark’s Work WearHouse. Go when there is a sale. The best thing about the store is they sell the pants by length & width. This way, I don’t have to have them hemmed.
