  2. Lil says:

    hmm

..are those police officers punching the person?

  3. Kim says:

    Western…isn’t that an omelette?

  4. Natalka says:

No, Erica, you’re not the only one…

  5. Connie says:

Boo, are you Queen’s alumni? ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Boo Radley says:

I still go to Queen’s, but for grad studies now ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. Vivi says:

It’s on the site because it’s an important social issue worth discussing. We don’t need to just discuss buying stuff.

  8. YouGottaBeKiddingMe says:

    Common Boo

Just cause its the news doesn’t mean a certain university is better than another. Queen has just as many flaws or even more than Western.
Queens was so bad that they had to cancel HOMECOMING for this year.
Please don’t post this BS or take it off

    Thnx

  9. Julia says:

I love Western! And this should not be on this site. I don’t want social issues on my shopping website….I get enough of that everywhere else ๐Ÿ™

  10. Boo Radley says:

Sorry guys, I didn’t mean to annoy you. I just thought something off-topic would be nice for a change.

  11. Sallycat says:

I agree with Julia. I was confused as to why it was posted.

  12. avoncallingu says:

Oil Thi….. geesh! I can’t even spell it anymore but I can still sing it – the feet don’t go us as well though!

  13. Michelle says:

Why the heck is this even on here???? this has nothing to do with the website. Who has the power to remove it????

  14. Julia says:

    No worries Boo ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. Nat says:

Having been a UWO student and living in this city, this is a huge concern and disturbing to me. There was also a similar incident outside the front of this building a few hours apart from this. If it’s a problem having it posted here, maybe it can be digussed (for those who wish to do so) in another area..?

  16. Kerahna says:

    goooooooooo QUEENS!!!!!!!
Unfortunately from resnet, youtube is throttled so hard I had to wait 10 minutes for that to just load.

  17. Christina8717 says:

Why doesn’t everyone just relax? lol…….

  18. erica says:

    wahoooo queen’s!!!

i do wish it was something more appropriate (someone being arrested to that degree sucks) but what I think the people commenting do not understand the the rivalry between Queen’s and Western and the pure joy of talking smack…

    and oil thigh.. hell yes!

ps: i like the off topic mainly b/c queen’s is where I am at right now (typing this from my home in the ghetto!)

  19. avi says:

western. we’re number 1. we will take you down. queen’s lol. what jokers

  20. Connie says:

    Oil thigh ne banrighinn… ๐Ÿ™‚

Queen’s did win the Girl Talk concert the other day!

  21. Natasha says:

Is no one else curious about what the true story is here? What did this person do? And does anyone else think the violence may have been a little more than necessary given that the person was clearly outnumbered? Do they think they are on COPS?

  22. Boo Radley says:

Natasha, I am very curious actually. i tried getting more information but was unsuccessful. If you manage to find out what happened please let us know!

  23. Sally says:

Maybe drugs? For all we know it wasn’t even a Western student that they had on the ground.

  24. moochi says:

I don’t get it…this is Boo’s blog, no one ever told the readers YOU HAVE TO READ THIS, and plus were you forced to read the video? The post is put into the category of “others”, so as to not confuse viewers that it is not “coupons” or “sales”.

Anyways, I just find it annoying because whenever Boo posts something off topic, everyone gets very uptight that it is not “relevant”.

Sorry, might have sounded very mad…probably because I have a midterm tmr haha. And I want to know the real story behind the youtube video.

  25. Boo Radley says:

hehe thanks moochi for the support ๐Ÿ˜€

And good luck on your midterm!!

  26. Vivi says:

Good job Boo. The occasional off-ed piece is appreciated.

  27. Theresa says:

I’m thinking I might have “stopped resisting”.

  28. JSAM'S Mom says:

I agree that off-topic posts from time to time is nice to see/read; however, there is enough crap in this world that we are subjected to every single day that we don’t need to see it here.

  29. lamont says:

Some background info…the person attempted to force himself into a proffs office, trying to throw the person in it out. When unsuccessfull, he then barricaded himself in another office. When campus police arrived, he rushed at them violently and attempted to escape….making it down several floors. London City Police arrived and attempted to assist the arrest at that point. The man continued to resist and to attempt to flee. The video only shows a small portion of the actual incident. I think it is important to think about the incident in its entirety. A man was attempting to barricade himself inside a school. Police had no idea why, who he was, or if he was armed. Of course they were required to use physical force. Prior to the physical altercation that had tried unsuccessfull to pepper spray him. Police have a duty to protect the other students, general public, the man himself, from himself…as well as a right to go home alive at the end of their shift. When a person continues to act in an erratic manner in a public place, he is a danger to others. I personally, applaud the actions of all officers in attendence. If I, or my child was a student there, I would want all necessary measures taken to ensure safety. In an age where incidents like Columbine, and the Pennsylvania school shootings are well known, we can never be too cautious.

  30. tcbstamp says:

Of course this is a concern- but why is this on a coupon site?

  31. frugiedh says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, Boo, but smartcanucks started out as a website to help “poor” struggling university students save money while they were in school. In the good ‘ol days there were lots of posts that didn’t involve any coupons and money saving sales. There were interesting posts, funny posts, great links to other stuff for students and a huge variety of cool info.
    I miss the old smartcanucks.
I will never understand why people who aren’t interested in something, just don’t watch it or read it? Am I missing something? Or do people just love to complain?

  32. Jimi says:

You’re telling me that there are no crimes or incidents at Q’s? Just looking at the ‘unofficial’ stats at Queen’s there are rapes and assaults every year. Maybe there should be a few arrest of those snot-nosed Q’s students.

With the quagmire surround H1N1 which will be multi-million dollar ‘hoax’ played right in front of our eyes and the millions of citizens terrorized by the propoganda…this doesn’t warrant one of your off-topic stories.

But I sense this Western-Queen thing is a personal vendetta.

    Boo Hiss Boo.

  33. Stephen says:

I love how people think they own the internet and every site is their site. Seriously people, do some research. This isn’t a site run by a business. It is a business of sorts in its own right … but in actuality it is really just one guy’s site. He is allowed to post what he wants to. Sure, leave your feedback, but be nice about it and respect that this is NOT yours it is HIS. You’re lucky that somebody has put so much effort into something that benefits you and the rest of the Canadian population.

  34. AmberLab says:

I find the blog gets boring when only sales are posted. I like human interest pieces like this that make you think and discuss the situation.

And it goes without saying, Boo Radley can post what he likes on his website.

  35. lamont says:

Seriously….read it if you want to…..don’t if you don’t want to. There are many sales and coupon posts that I skip over due to a lack of intrest in the product. I personally have no preference over Queens or Western and I don’t think that the video is seriously meant to sway anyone’s preference either way. It is entertaining, and makes for good conversation. All universities have crimes, and problems, as do all colleges and neighbourhoods. I don’t think anyone is suggesting otherwise. I say Boo should go ahead and post whatever he likes. If you don’t like it, don’t read it.

  36. maksik says:

    unapropriate.. hmm..

  37. Vivi says:

I completely agree with you frugiedh. It’s sad when all some people want to do is discuss where the cheapest products are. Yes, I like deals but I am also concerned about the outside world. This is an community and we shouldn’t isolate ourselves to strict consumerism if we don’t want to. No one has to read an article. Skip it if you like – you have choices.

  38. Nelly says:

Hehe, I used to go to Western… What a joke that place was (at least the Computer Science department where I studied). It’s funny to see it in the news, especially in relation to such a bizarre incident. Still, there are much worse problems at other schools, like the 1989 shooting at Ecole Polytechnique (where my dad happened to work for several years), then the Dawson College shooting in 2006 (where I used to go to school).. So much violence! In comparison, this incident is fairly minor, though. But hey, they’ve got to show SOMETHING in the news! ๐Ÿ˜€

  39. Cheap says:

I thinks its seriously wonderful that this video has been posted on this site where so many people can see it.

To me, the video shows excessive police brutality in response to the arrest. How can a person resist when there are at least five police officers on top of them and the person is being punched and kneed.

Events like this should be brought to everyone’s attention. Change can occur when the public is aware of what is going on.

  40. Cheap says:

P.S. Don’t say that it can’t happen at Queen’s. It can happen anywhere to anyone. A while ago in B.C. a man died because he was held down by police and tasered. There was a police investigation done with regards to the possibility of the use of excessive police brutality. Again, this could happen anywhere to anyone.

  41. Alex89 says:

I think SmartCanuck is a great website for “sharing”. Thanks for sharing something different with us from time to time. In addition to trying to save a few bucks, I also enjoy widen my vision by seeing things I would not normally find or pay attention to.

Besides, I’m well aware that I did not pay a membership to become a member!

  42. Joker2871 says:

Hi Guys, As someone who has worked with a Security Company that does major events like concerts and Homecomings ( LOL ) I have worked at events at Most of the universities in southwestern Ontario. I have had to effect several arrests/detentions of some rather violent and bizzare individuals, what you see here is only a minor fraction of what went on. When dealing with individuals that are irrational, they become very very strong, sdrenaline or drugs or whatever kicks in and it is very tough to get them to comply or even listen and comprehend what is going on, so you may say ‘well they used excessive force’ but i disagree because to bend an arm behind someones back to handcuff them is down right difficult, i know i have done it several times. And you dont know if that person is spitting on the officers, biting at them ( I have both done to me) etc.

Now also, some people do use excessive force on people, but in this video, i dont see it, maybe cuz i have been in that situation before.

And you know that if they had used a taser on them, everyone would be all over them for that too.

So i am just saying, get the whole story of what happened, leading up to that. I have worked with the UWO police on several occasions and they are a great bunch of people. I have worked with London Police and most of them are decent too, I have had some issues with them, with the way some stuff has worked out but it was dealt with.

    Thanks for the post Boo

  43. Vivi says:

I agree. Many videos we see online don’t provide the context of the story. We don’t know what happened immediately before.

  44. Kim says:

It’s a thought provoking link and I’m glad I clicked it… but it was obviously NOT a sale OR a coupon, so why are people complaining about that fact? You don’t have to click everything you see online folks. Not interested? Move onto another article.

Thank you for the link Boo.

  45. Marketing Guy says:

I know this is a site for deals, etc… but sometimes scrolling an endless page of coupons (99% of which I’ll never use) gets a bit tedious. I hardly think the entire site is drifting off-topic by posting the odd special interest piece. Thanks for mixing it up a little. ๐Ÿ™‚

On that note, this sort of thing happens at every university. And as for this sucker, well, obviously aggression enters the picture and a little undue violence may have been used. But if the cops want you in cuffs that bad, just chill out and sort it out later. If it’s completely unwarranted, sue ’em. But this kid needs to learn to just lie down when FIVE uniforms are on him. Would’ve saved him an ass-kicking.
