Shoppers Drug Mart: 20x Optimum Points this Saturday

shoppersjan3

While Shoppers Drug Mart and SmartCanucks might not be best buddies nowadays, that doesn’t mean we can’t still pass on the savings once they’re publicized by the big SDM!

This Saturday, January 3rd, Shoppers Drug Mart will be giving 20x the points to Optimum card holders who spend $50 or more. Having just cashed in my Optimum points for Christmas shopping (it may be pink, but it’s a nice camera!) I’m looking forward to taking advantage of this to rack up some more points.

How Was Your 2008?

Happy New Year 2009

Looking back on the months gone by,
As a new year starts and an old one ends,
We contemplate what brought us joy,
And we think of our loved ones and our friends.

Recalling all the happy times,
Remembering how they enriched our lives
We reflect upon who really counts,
As the fresh and bright new year arrives.

And when we ponder those who do,
We immediately think of you.

Thanks for being one of the reasons I’ll/We’ll have a Happy New Year!

By Joanna Fuchs

Another year has gone by and what a year it’s been. I’m very thankful for all the wonderful people in my life. I’d  also like to thank my Smart Canucks friends! It’s been wonderful meeting you and getting to know you more and more over the years. Together we celebrated our brightest moments and found a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on whenever we needed it. Thank you!

I should’ve probably blogged about this earlier but I was extremely busy this holiday season. On SmartCanucks we’re having a Cute Pet Contest where you can submit a picture of your pet for a chance to win one of 30 prizes that include a Zune, a $75 Zellers Gift Card and an iPod.

The deadline for submitting a picture was supposed to be today but I’m extending it for 3 more days to give my blog readers a chance to submit a picture too. So the new deadline to submitting a picture is 11:00pm on  January 3rd, 2009.

Empire Cinemas: Holiday BOGO deal

holidaybogo_prp_1

Thinking about catching a movie this holiday season? Maybe you’ve already been? For every ticket you purchase this holiday you should be given a coupon at the box office for a “Buy One, Get One” movie ticket deal. The coupon will be valid from Jan 12-Feb 26. If you’ve purchased your ticket online or at an automated ticket booth, bring your stub to the box office to get your coupon.

The BOGO offer might have pushed me over the edge. I think tomorrow might be movie-marathon day. Gran Torino and Benjamin Button, here I come! :)

More details on the offer here.

Zellers: Rubbermaid food containers BOGO, Jan 2-16

zellersrubbermaidbogo

Just got the flyer in the mail today (as you can likely tell by the crumples in the scan). Starting this Friday and continuing for two weeks, Zellers is offering Buy One Get One Free on all Rubbermaid food containers. Definitely a good idea if you still have Christmas leftovers covered in saran wrap on a dinnner plate. Although if you do, it might be time to throw those out anyways. :P

Lots of other Rubbermaid deals in the flyer and in store, mostly on large storage totes. Keep your eyes peeled!

Arrive Alive tonight: take free public transit

city-bus-stuck-in-snow

New Year’s is a time for fun and celebration, and a lot of people are going to take that fun and celebration a little too seriously and over-imbibe on spirits and liquors. Whether you intend to get your drink on or just want to travel safely to avoid those who do, many cities across the country are offering free public transit tonight.

Break out the phone book and call your local transit terminal to see what arrangements have been made. Here in St. Catharines buses will be free after 8pm and running past their normal hours, offering service until 2am. I know that Go Transit and the TTC will be offering similar arrangements, but unfortunately I don’t have the specific details for the rest of the country.

If you do call and find out, let us know here in the comments. Let’s make sure that the SmartCanucks community has a safe and happy New Year!

New Year’s Events Across Canada

new-years-toast

Still looking to make New Year’s plans for tonight? Why not take a peek at About.com’s summary of New Year’s Events in Canada. Many of the events will be free, so it’s worth taking a peek. In my neck of the woods, the annual Niagara Falls New Year’s event will be kicking off at 8pm with Rodger Hodgson of SuperTramp and Kim Mitchell.

Ok - so you get what you pay for with free events, but still..

Any cool events going down where you live tonight?

SmartCanucks Caption Challenge: Week 5

captionweek5

We couldn’t be any deeper in hockey season right now, and what better way to denote this than with a caption contest? I know it looks like he’s in command of the situation, but that dude’s balance is about to DISAPPEAR.

And while I haven’t done so before, I think I’m going to kick things off with my own caption;

“Hey! That’s not a skate sharpener!!”

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: Read it FREE

bbutton

Not so much a deal per se, but I’ve stumbled across a free online version of the original F Scott Fitzgerald short story, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Considering the film is such a hot topic amongst movie goers right now, I thought some of you might enjoy giving this one a quick read. I haven’t seen the film yet, but the story is wonderful. It definitely has me booking a date to get out to the movie theater.

The online text is part of a full online reprint of Tales of the Jazz Age, the collection in which Benjamin Button first appeared. If you liked the story, why not check out the others? You can find the Table of Contents for Tales of the Jazz Age here.

Chapters In-Store Sale: 30% off hardcovers, more

chaptersinstore

Chapters isn’t the only store still celebrating their post-Christmas clearance, but they are the only one who felt the need to tell me about it in my inbox this morning. This week, Chapters is offering 30% off all regular-priced hardcovers, 50% off calendars, and 50% of seasonal items. If you have iRewards, you can’t get a further discount on these items.

Really not that great a deal. Aren’t their hardcovers are usually on sale to begin with? The deal is in store only. Honestly — you’re going to do better shopping their online Boxing Week sale.

McDonald’s Mondays: McBINGO!

When was the last time you ordered a cup of coffee, an Egg McMuffin, and a bingo card?  It’s may not be your typical Extra Value Meal, but at one McDonald’s in Maine it’s become a weekly breakfast tradition.

It may seem like a strange story, but it’s something that I’ve seen pop up at more than a few McDonald’s in the past few years.  Many Mickey D’s seem to be offering special events on certain days of the week to cater to different kinds of crowds.  In my neck of the woods, certain locations have a “Family Night” on Thursdays from 5pm-7pm.  I’ve yet to bring my kids to it, but I believe there’s a good deal of coloring and crafts involved.  It’s a neat idea, and while at it’s base it’s really just another ploy to bring people into the restaurant, it’s still nice to see a restaurant try to actively be a part of the community.

Canada Needs More Computers

Canada Needs moe Computers

In the Economist’s “Pocket World in Figures” Canada ranked 2nd amongst countries with largest computer ownership with 87.6 computers per 100 people. Not too bad compared to say Finland which only has 50 computers per 100 people. But Israel ranks in first place with 122.1 computers per 100 people so we’re going to have to buy computers like crazy to catch up  .

More detailed rankings can be found here

Canadian Blogs: Yarn Harlot

yh-mainhead

Featured Blog: Yarn Harlot

Recent winner of the 2008 Canadian Blog Awards (second place went to SmartCanucks!), Yarn Harlot is the ongoing story of one woman’s adventures in knitting. Like any good story though, the knitting merely sets the stage for an adventure full of personality and good writing. Stephanie’s life outside of knitting is just as fun a read as her life inside of it.

Whether you’re a knitter or knot (see what I did there?), Yarn Harlot is a delightful yarn (did it again) for blog readers from all walks of life.

Worst Boxing Day discount EVER

worstboxingdayever

I was cruising around all of the solid deals on Amazon.ca this week and couldn’t help but laugh at the very first item on their Boxing Week page.It showcased a whopping 4% savings on Animal Crossing: City Folk! That’s two whole dollars!

Not that I don’t appreciate the savings, but when you’re trying to push your Boxing Week bonanza, do you really think 4% is a number you want to toss around?

SC Tech Deals is still the same SC you know and love, but tech-centric. Everything from computers and electronics to video games, GPS and music players — you name it, we’re trying to help you save on it.

This is probably the biggest week of the year for tech savings, so if you haven’t visited SmartCanucks Tech Deals yet, there’s no better time!

SmartCanuck Caption Challenge: Week 4 Redux

teddy_bears_pic

It’s been a few weeks since we tried to toss a caption challenge up there, but I thought it might be a good idea to take some time to clear the palette. This week I thought I’d go with a theme that would be universally loved - teddy bear picnics.

So let’s have it it, people! What caption say you?

(No bears were harmed in the making of this picture.)

Great deals do nothing for my social anxiety (The Great Boxing Day Round-Up)

boxingday07-ec

Ladies and gentlemen, let your Boxing Day shopping commence!!

Ah - who am I kidding?  If you’re a deal-hound (and if you’re reading this site, you no doubt are) you’ve been lined up in front of your favorite store for hours and are only reading this upon your return trip.  The picture above is a quick snapshot of Toronto’s Eaton Centre on Boxing Day 2007, and it’s a perfect reminder of why I like to stay indoors on the 26th.  Luckily I usually overspend on Christmas and have nothing left come boxing day anyways, so I never feel too put out.

This year though — I get to be on the other side of the counter.  As I type this I’m quickly wolfing down a breakfast bagel and getting my shoes togther to head in and fight the good fight at my retail job for the next 9 hours.  Wish me luck everybody!  And if you got any great deals today, let us know here!
