Sears Canada Offers: FREE Shipping on Orders of $49 or More!

sears-canada-free-shipping-on$50-orders

For those of you who spend a lot of time shopping online or thorough the Sears Canada catalogue, you will be very impressed to hear that they have reduced their free-shipping threshold from $99 or more, to now just $49 or more. This $50 threshold drop will make it so that you don’t feel pressured into buying a bunch of filler items, that even if you plan on returning, there’s always that fear that they won’t give you a full refund and will perhaps just provide you with store credit.

This free-shipping offer has conditions that are the same as the $99 or more offer, where oversized or overweight items will be charged extra as well as people having orders shipped to remote areas. The weight restriction is 65 lbs and over, while the size restriction is a bit more complicated. If your item’s length exceeds 78-inches, or the length plus the girth exceeds 118-inches, then you will not qualify for the free-shipping offer.

Google Canada Apps: FREE Unlimited Storage Through Google Photos

google-canada-google-photos

Earlier today, Google Canada made an official announcement on their blog that they would be launching a new free service for storing all of your media related memories, the service is called Google Photos. Google Photos is a standalone app that can take care of decluttering your phone and computer by redirecting all of your photos and videos to be stored on a safe, and unlimited storage system. The service is available for all platforms, including Android, iOS and online, and is entirely free – no matter how many pictures or videos you upload on it or how frequently you use it.

google-canada-google-photos

Google Photos is not only a free service that will keep high-quality backups of your pictures and videos (up to 16MP for pictures and 1080HD resolution for videos), but it is also a very intelligent piece of technology that can help organize your memories. Google Photos can search for people, places, or even specific days that pictures were taken, without using any tags. Simply plug-in what you’d like to see, your best friend Jake, or your trip to NYC, and Google Photos will auto group the pictures into a neat file for your viewing only.

There are a number of other really neat features that Google Photos will provide for you, other than storage, all of which you can read about here on the official Google blog.

Government Removing Tax on Feminine Hygiene Products on July 1st

tampon pad aisle

Starting on July 1st, you will pay less for feminine hygiene products as the government announced that they will be exempting goods and services tax (GST) and harmonized sales tax (HST) on “a supply of a product that is marketed exclusively for feminine hygiene purposes and is a sanitary napkin, tampon, sanitary belt, menstrual cup or other similar product.

There has been a lot of pressure on the government to remove the tax on feminine hygiene products but considering they made $36,398,387 in taxes on feminine hygiene products last year, they have been slow to make any changes.  Several provinces still charge the provincial portion of the tax on these products and have not yet announced any changes to the tax.

Amazon.ca is Now Offering FREE Same-Day Delivery in Select Cities

amazon.ca-same-day-delivery

Back in November, Amazon.ca decided they were going to begin offering same-day delivery in select cities and on select products. This service, while convenient, was going to run a rather high price tag, with it costing $5.99 flat-fee for Amazon Prime members and a whopping $9.98 for non-members, with each additional item in your order costing an extra $0.99. Amazon.ca has changed their terms for same-day shipping, and are now offering Amazon Prime members, who spend $35 or more on their order, free same-day delivery.

The same shipping fee will be in place for Amazon Prime members who spend below $35, but with there now being 20 million different items qualifying for same-day delivery service I’m sure you won’t have a hard time finding some extra filler items to bump you over that $35 minimum.

Your order will have to be placed before 12pm on the day that you wish to have it delivered, and so far the only Canadian cities that offer this service are Toronto and Vancouver.

President’s Choice Canada Recall: Moroccan-Style Hummus (280g) May Contain Toxin

The toxin cannot be removed from your food, even with extreme cooking temperatures. Should you become poisoned with this bacteria, common symptoms include: vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramping and fever. There are yet to be any reports of people becoming ill from these containers though.

If you find out that you have a spoiled container, be sure to throw it out or return it to the store where you bought it from.

Loblaws Canada Food Recall: Metal Objects Found in Farmer’s Market and Strang’s Produce Brand Russet Potatoes

loblaws-canada-farmers-market-recall

A couple of days ago, a man in Antigonish, N.S. was added to a growing list of customers who have found metal and harmful objects in potatoes they purchased from Loblaws Farmer’s Market brand and Strang’s Produce brand Russet Potatoes. The man found a nail in his potatoes, but this isn’t the strangest thing to be found in the potatoes thus far. Other customer’s have reported finding needles and metal objects over the past couple months from these two Atlantic Canadian potato brands.

The RCMP has an ongoing investigation on this matter, as they perceive that it may be the result of criminal tampering with the two brands’ produce. Loblaws has issued a recall on all of the following potato products to be either returned to the store or thrown away:

Farmer’s Market Potatoes:

  • Potatoes Russet 15 lb/6.8kg, UPC: 061483014779
  • Potatoes Russet 10lb/4.54kg, UPC: 061483014786
  • Potatoes Russet 5lb/2.27kg, UPC: 061483005920

Strang’s Produce:

  • Potatoes 15lb/6.8kg, UPC: 3338345486
  • Potatoes 10lb/4.54kg, UPC: 3338345485

Strang’s Chef:

  • Potatoes Jumbo for Chips 50lb/22.7kg, UPC: 033383454900

These potatoes have been distributed across Atlantic Canada, including New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and P.E.I. If you do find a piece of metal or any other tampering related object in your potatoes, do not throw it away. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency asks that you hold onto it and return it to your local police authority so that they may add it to their investigation.

Starbucks App Canada News: Hackers Draining Bank Accounts Via Starbucks App

starbucks-canada-hackers-stealing-money

It was reported this past Monday that hackers have been breaking into Starbucks accounts of unknowing customers and stealing money from their bank accounts, credit cards and PayPal accounts. This break-in issue is largely due to the lack of security on the Starbucks app, which can gain automatic access to your bank account and credit card through auto-reload and reloading gift cards.

The company has had problems with the app’s security measures in the past, as just last year it was discovered that they had been leaving their passwords open to viewing in plain-text.

Starbucks says that they have not been hacked, and that most of the hacking that has been happening recently can be attributed to password’s not being strong enough. The people who have recently been hacked have actually come forward and said that they’re passwords were not all that ‘unique’. Starbucks recommends that you use both upper and lower case letters, as well as a combination of numbers and symbols so as to keep your password better protected.

Starbucks hasn’t said whether they would be updating the security system on the Starbucks app, so as to prevent any future instances of hackers gaining access to your account, but it is still rather early to tell if they will change that statement.
