Remembrance Day Canada November 11th 2011

“In Flanders Fields”

By Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

We will remember them.

Canada’s National Animal: The Polar Bear?

1319087404902_original1

Hey fellow Canadians …

Have you heard that Senator Nicole Eaton in Ottawa is trying to retire the Beaver as our national animal and replace it with the Polar Bear? She says: “The beaver is a has-been. It’s a rat … a big rat, that doesn’t reflect our new values” while “The polar bear, with its strength, courage, resourcefulness and dignity is perfect for the part” according to The Toronto Sun article

I must admit that a) I don’t care in the slightest which animal they use and b) I chuckled at ‘the big rat’ comment

What are your thoughts?

There is a petition running here with over 6,300 signatures at this time.

Durham Clean Air Company Threatening to Sue Me. What’s my position here?

I got an email from the president of Durham Clean Air Company earlier today:

There is a blog on your site reading “SCAM ALERT (MAYBE) DURHAM REGION AIR QUALITY TESTING”. There are now legal documents and voice recordings on your site from my company and employees. I demand that you remove this or I will be proceeding with legal action. This is not legal or acceptable. If you have any questions please contact me at: <email removed>

I wasn’t sure what she was referring to so I ask her for links and she emails me:

http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/124667-scam-alert-maybe-durham-region-air-quality-test-canada-3/

this specific page has my company’s paper work, pictures  and voice recordings.

http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/124667-scam-alert-maybe-durham-region-air-quality-test-canada-6/

This forum needs to be removed. It is all very false and dangerous information. I am seriously considering taking very powerful legal action against your site for the damages you have caused us by having this illegal information on there.

So I go through the thread which starts here and I can see it’s basically people writing about their experience with the company. It seems like many people didn’t have such a good experience though so I can see why she’s concerned.

Now I’m wondering what my position here is? Should I just delete the thread? I don’t want to cause her company any harm if it runs a legitimate non-scammy business. I also don’t want to get sued obviously. Anyone with legal experience know what I can do here?

Disney Pixar Movies released in RealD 3D in Canadian Theatres!

mike-wazowski2

Did you take your kiddos to see The Lion King re-released in 3? I did not. However it seems it will cross the $80 million mark at the domestic box office very soon! The Disney Studios have now decided to re-release these great movies into theaters in RealD 3D

  • Beauty & The Beast – January 13, 2012
  • Finding Nemo – September 14, 2012
  • Monsters Inc. – January 18, 2013
  • The Little Mermaid (my fav!!) – September 13, 2013

“Great stories and great characters are timeless, and at Disney we’re fortunate to have a treasure trove of both,” said Alan Bergman, President, The Walt Disney Studios. “We’re thrilled to give audiences of all ages the chance to experience these beloved tales in an exciting new way with 3D – and in the case of younger generations, for the first time on the big screen.”

What are your thoughts on these new trend? Personally I don’t think it’s necessary… but rather just another excuse to make more $ off of us!

Thankfully, retailers are starting to catch on that there are many of us out there that have special needs … and slowly but surely we’re being offered more options.

Blockbuster Canada: Liquidation Sale Details Of Remaining Stores

classical

Unfortunately earlier this week the Receiver of Blockbuster was granted permission to liquidate and close the remailing 253 Blockbuster stores.  My heart goes out to those that will soon be jobless.  Our location in my tiny town apparently was the biggest earning Blockbuster in Canada. (Read the only video rental store)

Dvdswapper has posted the details of the liquidation on our forum.

1: Rental option ends and stores close at 5pm Thursday, Sept 8th.

2: Stores reopen Friday, Sept 9th at 10am with the 1st wave of discounts. Sale end date: October 1st.

3: Monday, Sept 12, 2011, store hours change to 12-9pm

4: EVERYTHING must go. Yes, this means systems, games, food, skin off their backs and possibly the paint on the walls

5: Discounts start at 15 & 25%, increasing to 40, 50 and 70 by the last week.

6: All sales are final. No exchanges, returns or refunds. Caveat Emptor.

7: ALL stores are shutting down for good. There will be NO locations remaining in Canada.

8: Giftcards and coupons will NOT be honoured beginning Friday Sept 9th.

9: Here is a list of ALL 253 STORES closing

*Stores are now offering 40% off of everything, including games.  A lot of stores are pretty barren now.

Another Earthquake – did you feel it Canada?

I get a text from my mother asking if I felt the earth shake and I wonder if she’s asking me some deep, meaningful question … and then I realize my twitter feed is going crazy with #quake comments.

Did YOU feel the earth shake?

Although thought to be based in Washington, DC it seems the quake rattled it’s way to Montreal, Toronto and other major areas as high as a 5.9!

Goderich Ontario Canada Tornado Disaster. How To Help and Online Auction

blog

As most of you already know Goderich Ontario named “the prettiest town in Canada” was hit by a F3 tornado Sunday afternoon. This hit really close to home for myself.  Thankfully my friends and family are safe, some have extensive damage to their homes and or workplaces, but they are safe.

Here is some information if you’d like to help donate:

Outside of Huron County and if you want to donate or volunteer, you can call the toll-free # Toll-Free: 1-866-743-7818 or TTY: 1-888-435-6086
Within Huron County call 2-1-1.

There are quite a few families with nothing but their clothes on their backs. They can use toiletries, clothing, etc.

I spent the afternoon helping a friend move debris off their yard and cut trees. It is truly heartbreaking.

A wonderful Auction has been made on Facebook with 100% of alll donations going directly to Goderich.  I have personally donated an Amazon gift certificate from the mods of Sc, if you would like to help donate you can also bid on that.

HP Canada: Touchpad Now $100!

I’m not much of a gadget person, but I know that many of you are so this may be of interest to all you tekkies!

Last week, HP announced that they are discontinuing their tablets. So after this news broke, electronics retailers have begun to sell off their remaining HP Touchpads at the major discount price of $99.99 for the 16GB model which retailed for $449.99! With the 32GB model selling for $149.99.

But there’s a catch: The units are hard to come by since prices have been dramatically slashed. Most retail places are already sold out of them. 🙂 Have you managed to get your hands on one?

Whole Foods Canada: Square One Location Opening Tomorrow!!

To celebrate Whole Foods’ near location, just right outside of Square One (Mississauga), the store is hosting some festivities tomorrow from 8:30-10am, ***Wednesday, August 10th***.

The festivities include some demos, vendor samplings, prizes, music, & more! I’m sure that there’ll be some things for children to do as well. 🙂 This will be a great opportunity to check out the new store and see what they have to offer.

Whole Foods is not cheap, but when they have their sales, you can pick up some items at decent prices.

Cineplex Store: $10 Off Rio + 500 Scene Points!

It wasn’t until my last trip to the movie theatre that I found out that Cineplex now has their own online store where you can rent, buy movies and gift cards. And to be competitive with other DVD buying/renting websites, they are offering Scene points with their purchases. If you have enough points, you can also redeem them for merchandise at their store!

One of their current promos is $10 off Rio DVDs + 500 Scene points. This isn’t a bad deal…especially if you were planning to buy it anyway!
