Bank of Canada Raises Interest Rate Again

Announcements 1 comment

The Bank of Canada raised its benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a point to one per cent on Wednesday. The Bank Rate is correspondingly 1 1/4 per cent and the deposit rate is 3/4 per cent.

“Recent economic data have been stronger than expected, supporting the Bank’s view that growth in Canada is becoming more broadly-based and self-sustaining. Consumer spending remains robust, underpinned by continued solid employment and income growth.  There has also been more widespread strength in business investment and in exports. Meanwhile, the housing sector appears to be cooling in some markets in response to recent changes in tax and housing finance policies. The Bank continues to expect a moderation in the pace of economic growth in the second half of 2017.

The global economic expansion is becoming more synchronous, as anticipated in July, with stronger-than-expected indicators of growth, including higher industrial commodity prices. However, significant geopolitical risks and uncertainties around international trade and fiscal policies remain, leading to a weaker US dollar against many major currencies. In this context, the Canadian dollar has appreciated, also reflecting the relative strength of Canada’s economy.

While inflation remains below the 2 per cent target, it has evolved largely as expected in July. There has been a slight increase in both total CPI and the Bank’s core measures of inflation, consistent with the dissipating negative impact of temporary price shocks and the absorption of economic slack. Nonetheless, there remains some excess capacity in Canada’s labour market, and wage and price pressures are still more subdued than historical relationships would suggest, as observed in some other advanced economies.

Given the stronger-than-expected economic performance, Governing Council judges that today’s removal of some of the considerable monetary policy stimulus in place is warranted. Future monetary policy decisions are not predetermined and will be guided by incoming economic data and financial market developments as they inform the outlook for inflation. Particular focus will be given to the evolution of the economy’s potential, and to labour market conditions. Furthermore, given elevated household indebtedness, close attention will be paid to the sensitivity of the economy to higher interest rates.”

Announcements 0 comments

A few month ago, Amazon purchased Whole Foods for 13.4 billion dollars. Last month, Amazon spent its first day as the owner of a brick-and-mortar grocery chain cutting prices at Whole Foods Market as much as 43 percent.

Now Amazon Canada is working on plans to roll out its one- and two-hour membership delivery service, Prime Now, into Canada later this year. Amazon could begin offering this service in Vancouver and Toronto in November and January, respectively, under a pilot program that will deliver groceries and other items. This is good news for Whole Foods fans since Amazon Canada will be getting its food from the recently acquired chain.

Air Canada Centre to be Renamed Scotiabank Arena

Toronto’s Air Canada Centre (ACC) will be renamed Scotiabank Arena in July of next year! This comes under a 20 year agreement worth a reported $800 million. Neither party would confirm the dollar figure, but Scotiabank did describe it as one of the three richest deals in pro sports, even after adjusting for the exchange rate. When Air Canada signed on as the building’s title sponsor in 1999, it pledged $4 million a year. Prior to the ACC, the Leafs had called Maple Leaf Gardens home since 1931.

The Scotiabank logo will replace that of Air Canada atop the Bay Street building as well as under the jumbo scoreboard inside.

How do you feel about the ACC being renamed?

Canadian Shopping News: Starbucks To Close Online Store

Starbucks Closing Online Store

Have you checked out the sale section in the online Starbucks store recently?  They recently added lots of products at up to 50% off.  A sale like that would usually be heavily advertised which lead to people contacting Starbucks for details only to find that as of October 1st, they will no longer sell online.  So if you stock up on their adorable mugs, or buy coffee beans and syrups online, stock up while you can.

The news comes not long after their decision to close all Teavana stores in Canada and the US which means we may see more cuts in the future as Starbucks restructures.  Comments from Starbucks say that they will still have products available in grocery stores and other retail partners.  While in the US this means Amazon, less choice for Canadians.  They have also said that they are concentrating on in-person customer experience and mobile technology.

Check out the sale selection at Starbucks here.

Amazon Cuts Prices at Whole Foods on First Day

Amazon spent its first day as the owner of a brick-and-mortar grocery chain cutting prices at Whole Foods Market as much as 43 percent. The price cuts will extend to stores in Canada, according to Whole Foods Market.

The tech giant’s $13.7 billion purchase of Whole Foods has sent shock waves through the already changing $800 billion supermarket industry. This connection promises to upend the way customers shop for groceries. Cutting prices at the chain with such an entrenched reputation for high cost is a sign that Amazon is serious about taking on competitors such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Kroger Co. and Costco Wholesale Corp.

Amazon said it will start selling Whole Foods brand products on its website, a move that sent down shares of packaged food sellers including Kellogg Co. Amazon also said members of its $99-per-year Prime shopping club would eventually be rolled intoWhole Foods‘ customer rewards program and be eligible for special offers and discounts.
